Preload of critical engine bolts affects the performance and durability of engines. In modern engines that pursue higher power outputs and which are of lighter weight, it becomes more difficult to select an optimal target preload in consideration of various factors such as the role and structural characteristics of joint members, joint load, and fatigue durability of bolts and joint members. A procedure to select the bolt preload using computer-aided engineering technology, especially the finite element method, has been developed. The procedure is illustrated with connecting-rod bolts for which an appropriate preload is known. The selection criteria of target preload and the finite element modeling technique for connecting-rod bolts are also explained.

Process behavior in metal cutting results from the chip formation process which is not easily observable and measurable during machining. By means of the finite element method chip formation in orthogonal metal cutting is modeled. The reciprocal interaction between mechanical and thermal loads is taken into consideration by involving the thermo-viscoplastic flow behavior of workpiece material. Local and temporal distributions of stress and temperature in the cutting zone are calculated depending on the cutting parameters. The calculated cutting forces and temperatures are compared with the experimental results obtarned from orthogonal cutting of steel AISl 4140. The model can be applied in process design for selection of appropriate tool-workpiece combination and optimum cutting conditions in term of mechanical and thermal loads.

A hybrid structural reliability analysis method that integrates a commercial finite element program and a reliability analysis algorithm is proposed to estimate the safety of real structures in this paper. Since finite element method (FEM) is most commonly and widely used in the analysis and design practice of real structures, it appears to be necessary to use general FEM program in the structural reliability analysis. In this case, simple conventional reliability methods cannot be used because the limit state function can only be expressed in an algorithmic form. The response surface method(RSM)-based reliability algorithm with the first-order reliability method (FORM) found to be ideal in this respect and is used in this paper. The intention of use of RSM is to develop, albeit approximately, an explicit expression of the limit state function for real structures. The applicability of the proposed method to real structures is examined with help of the example in consideration of a concrete dam. Both the strength and serviceability limit states are considered in this example.
Existing elastic analysis methods cannot be adhered to in order to assess the structural integrity of a reactor vessel and internals for a beyond design basis earthquake. Elasto-plastic analysis methods are required, and the factors that affect the elasto-plastic behavior of reactor materials should be taken into account. In this study, a material behavior model was developed that considers the irradiation embrittlement effect, which affects the elasto-plastic behavior of the reactor material. This was used to perform the elasto-plastic time history analyses of the reactor vessel and its internals for beyond design basis earthquake. For this investigation, appropriate beyond design basis earthquakes and reliable finite element models were used. Based on the analysis results, consideration was given to the load reduction effect and the margin change. These were transferred to the internals due to the plastic deformation of the reactor vessel.

An iterative numerical computational algorithm is presented to design a plate of shell element subjected to membrane and flexural forces. Based on equilibrium consideration, equations for capacities of top and bottom reinforcements in two orthogonal directions have been derived. The amount of reinforcement is determined locally, i. e., for each sampling point, from the equilibrium between applied and internal forces. One case of design is performed for a hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell (originally used by Lin and Scordelis) to check the design strength against a consistent design load, therefore, to verify the adequacy of design practice for reinforced concrete shells. Based on nonlinear analyses performed, the analytically calculated ultimate load exceeded the design ultimate load from 14-43% for an analysis with relatively low to high tension stiffening, ${\gamma}$ =5~20 cases. For these cases, the design method gives a lower bound on the ultimate load with respect to Lower bound theorem. This shows the adequacy of the current practice at least for this saddle shell case studied. To generalize the conclusion many more designs-analyses are performed with different shell configurations.
In electric machine design, there is a large computation cost for finite element analyses (FEA) when analyzing nonlinear characteristics in the machine Therefore, for the optimal design of an electric machine, designers commonly use an optimization algorithm capable of excellent convergence performance. However, robustness consideration, as this factor can guarantee machine performances capabilities within design uncertainties such as the manufacturing tolerance or external perturbations, is essential during the machine design process. Moreover, additional FEA is required to search robust optimum. To address this issue, this paper proposes a computationally efficient robust optimization algorithm. To reduce the computational burden of the FEA, the proposed algorithm employs a useful technique which termed static analysis assisted technique (SAAT). The proposed method is verified via the effective robust optimal design of electric machine to reduce cogging torque at a reasonable computational cost.
Generally, analytical consideration on the behaviour of metallic structures during quenching process, and analysis on the thermal stress and deformation after heat treatment are very important in presumption of crack and distorsion of quenched material. In this study a set of constitute equations relevant to the analysis of thermo elasto-viscoplastic materials with strain hysteresis during quenching process way presented on the basis of contimuum thermo-dynamics mechanics. The thermal stresses were numerically calculated by finite element technique of weighted residual method and the principle of virtual work. In the calculation process, the temperature depandency of physical and mechaniclal properties of the material in consideration. On the distribution of elasto-viscoplastic thermal stresses according to radial direction, axial and tangential stress are tensile stress(50MPa, 1.5GPa and 300MPa) in surface and compressive stress(-1.2GPa, -1.14GPa and -750MPa) in the inner part on the other hand, radial stress is tensile stress(900MPa) in area of analysis. According to axial direction, tangential stress gradients are average 60MPa/mm on the whole. The reversion of stress takes place at 11.5 to 16.8mm from the center in area of analysing.

The purpose of this research is the evaluation of the estimation equation of "CEP-FIP Model Code 1990(1991)", recently included in the domestic "Concrete Structure Design Code(2007)" in consideration of the concrete strength. As evaluation tools, crack element model applied a detailed bond-slip model as well as crack width obtained from experimental results by earlier researches. The crack element model is verified through the comparison with experimental results. The important variables in the estimation equation for the crack width in CEP-FIP Model Code 1990 are the tension stiffening effect and mean bond stress proposed in the paper to be improved in consideration of the concrete strength.
Most of the research work has been conducted on K-joints under static loading. Very limited information is available in consideration of fatigue strength of K-joints with concrete-filled chord. This paper aims to describe experimental and numerical investigations on stress concentration factors (SCFs) of concrete-filled circular chord and square braces K-joints under balanced axial loading. Experiment was conducted to study the hot spot stress distribution along the intersection of chord and braces in the two specimens with compacting concrete filled in the chord. The test results of stress distribution curves of two specimens were reported. SCFs of concrete-filled circular chord and square braces K-joints were lower than those of corresponding hollow circular chord and square brace K-joints. The corresponding finite element analysis was also conducted to simulate stress distribution along the brace and chord intersection region of joints. It was achieved that experimental and finite element analysis results had good agreement. Therefore, an extensive parametric study was carried out by using the calibrated finite element model to evaluate the effects of main geometric parameters and concrete strength on the behavior of concrete-filled circular chord and square braces K-joints under balanced axial loading. The SCFs at the hot spot locations obtained from ABAQUS were compared with those calculated by using design formula given in the CIDECT for hollow SHS-SHS K-joints. CIDECT Design Guide was generally quite conservative for predicting SCFs of braces and was dangerous for predicting SCFs of chord in concrete-filled circular chord and square braces K-joints. Finally SCF formulae were proposed for circular chord and square braces K-joints with concrete-filled in the chord under balanced axial loading. It is shown that the SCFs calculated from the proposed design equation are generally in agreement with the values derived from finite element analysis, which were proved to be reliable and accurate.

In this paper elastic-plastic large deflection analysis of ship structural members, plates, stiffened plates and cylindrical shallow shell, are performed by the finite element method. And for the consideration of the yielded propagation through the depth of the member, the layered element approach is employed. The present method is justified by comparing its results with those of experiment and others. As results, the nonlinear behavior and the ultimate strength curves are shown, which can be used in the design of the plates and the stiffened plates under compression, and the applicability to the shell structures is suggested. The analysis results are as followings. (1) The results of the approximate equations as well as those of buckling analysis may not guarantee precisely the safety of the structures in some cases and the optimum in other cases. Therefore they may not show the design criteria for the optimal design. (2) As the initial deflection increases, its effects on the ultimate strength of the structure generally increases, and the ultimate load, therefore, decreases. (3) This approach can be applied to the shell type structures. (4) The present method can be applied to the various structures composed of plate and beam members, for example, plates with hole and the stiffened plates with hole stiffened by spigot, doubler and/or stiffener, for the optimal design.
