It has been established that a crack has an important effect on the dynamic behavior of a structure. This effect depends mainly on the location and depth of the crack. To identify the location and depth of a crack in a structure, a method is presented in this paper which uses hybrid neuro-genetic technique. Feed-forward multilayer neural networks trained by back-propagation are used to learn the input)the location and dept of a crack)-output(the structural eigenfrequencies) relation of the structural system. With this neural network and genetic algorithm, it is possible to formulate the inverse problem. Neural network training algorithm is the back propagation algorithm with the momentum method to attain stable convergence in the training process and with the adaptive learning rate method to speed up convergence. Finally, genetic algorithm is used to fine the minimum square error.
In this paper, the effect of impulsive line on the propagation of shear waves in non-homogeneous elastic layer is investigated. The rigidity and density in the intermediate layer is assumed to vary quadratic as functions of depth. The dispersion equation is obtained by using the Fourier transform and Green's function technique. The study ends with the mathematical calculations for transmitted wave in the layer. These equations are in complete agreement with the classical results when the non-homogeneity parameters are neglected. Various curves are plotted to show the effects of non-homogeneities on shear waves in the intermediate layer.
In this study, the characteristics of the propagation of dam-break wave through a porous structure in a water tank is numerically analyzed by using the three-dimensional numerical model (ANSYS CFX model). As results of comparison between the existing measured and simulated water depth distributions in and around a porous structure, the agreement is relatively well satisfied. Moreover, for the case of the presence in part of a porous structure in a water tank, the three-dimensional flow structure is numerically analyzed In general, compared with in the area with a porous structure, the abrupt variation of water depth occurs in the area without a porous structure. It is shown that the porous structure can play a role to decrease the abrupt variation of water depth.
The sound wave in the sea propagates under the effect of water depth, sound velocity structure, sea surface and bottom roughness, and bottom sediment distribution. In particular the sound velocity structure in shallow water varies with time and space, an? the sediment distributes very variedly with place. In order to investigate the seasonal variation of low-frequency sound propagation in the Yellow Sea, the propagation experiments were conducted along the same track in the middle part of the Yellow Sea at various seasons of spring. summer, and autumn. In this paper we consider the measurement results on the propagation loss with the sound velocity structure, and investigate the seasonal variation of the propagation loss. As a result, the propagation losses measured in summer were larger than the losses in spring and autumn. And the propagation losses measured in autumn were smaller than the losses in spring. The seasonal change of the propagation loss increased with the rise of sound frequency and the propagation range.
The characteristics of ship induced waves caused by navigation become widely different from both ship's speed and water depth condition. The ship induced waves specially generated in coastwise routes frequently give rise to call unforeseen danger for swimmers and small boats as well as shoreline erosion or sea wall destruction in coastal zones. The main concern of ship induced wave study until now is either how to reduce ship resistance or how to manoeuvre the ship safely under a constant water depth in the view point of shipbuilding engineers. Moreover, due to the trends for appearance of the high speed ships at the shallow coastal water, we are confronted with the danger of damages from those ship induced waves. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the development of ship induced waves and the influence of their deformation effects according to its propagation ray. In present study, in order to predict the development of the ship induced waves and their propagation under the conditions of complicate and variable shallow water depth with varying ship's speed, we constructed a computer model using Boussinesq equation with a fixed coordinate system and verified the model results by comparison with experimental results. Additionally, the model was applied under the variable water depth based on actual passage and we then confirmed the importance of the variable water depth consideration.
When underwater blasting is conducted, both shock waves and water waves have an effect on adjacent coastal areas. In this study, an empirical formula for estimating the details of water waves caused by underwater blasting was applied to a non-reflected wave generation system, and a 3D numerical wave tank (NWT) was improved to reproduce the generation and propagation of such water waves. The maximum elevations of the propagated water waves were comparatively analyzed to determine the validity and effectiveness of the NWT. Good agreement was demonstrated between the empirical and simulation results. The generation and propagation of water waves were also simulated under each underwater blasting scenario for the removal of the Todo islet at the Busan Newport International Terminal (PNIT). It was determined that the water waves generated by the underwater blasting scenario examined in this study did not have a significant impact on the PNIT. In addition, multiple-charge blasting caused higher wave heights than single-charge blasting. As the amount of firing charge increased, the wave height also increased. Finally, larger water waves were generated during the later blasting conducted at a deeper depth as compared with an earlier blasting conducted at a relatively shallow depth.

In this paper, we present the analysis of radio wave propagation characteristics in curved tunnels. Tunnel propagation models are performed in two cases which are using ray-tracing method for straight tunnels and geometrical optics extension to the standard hybrid waveguide model for curved ones. By regression analysis for measured power based on distance between the transmitter and the received antenna in tunnels that have 3.5 m $\times$ 6 m cross section and limited wall depth path loss are 0.19 dB/m for straight section and 0.68 dB/m for curved ones. By comparing model analysis with measurement in tunnels, it has been shown that the simulated results of tunnel propagation models are similar to the measured values.
Material defects in the Steam Generator Tubes (SGT) of sodium cooled fast breeder reactor (PFBR) can lead to leakage of water into sodium. The water and sodium reaction will lead to major accidents. Therefore, the examination of steam generator tubes for the early detection of defects is an important requirement for safety and economic considerations. In this work, the Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) based Non Destructive Testing (NDT) technique is used to perform the defect detection process. The rectangular notch defects on the outer surface of steam generator tubes are modeled using COMSOL multiphysics 4.3a software. The obtained MFL images are de-noised to improve the integrity of flaw related information. Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) features are extracted from MFL images and taken as input parameter to train the neural network. A comparative study on characterization have been carried out using feed-forward back propagation (FFBP) and cascade-forward back propagation (CFBP) algorithms. The results of both algorithms are evaluated with Mean Square Error (MSE) as a prediction performance measure. The average percentage error for length, depth and width are also computed. The result shows that the feed-forward back propagation network model performs better in characterizing the defects.
The quality of 2D-to-3D conversion depends on the accuracy of the assigned depth to scene objects. Manual depth painting for given objects is labor intensive as each frame is painted. Specifically, a human is one of the most challenging objects for a high-quality conversion, as a human body is an articulated figure and has many degrees of freedom (DOF). In addition, various styles of clothes, accessories, and hair create a very complex silhouette around the 2D human object. We propose an efficient method to estimate visually pleasing depths of a human at every frame in a monocular video. First, a 3D template model is matched to a person in a monocular video with a small number of specified user correspondences. Our pose estimation with sequential joint angular constraints reproduces a various range of human motions (i.e., spine bending) by allowing the utilization of a fully skinned 3D model with a large number of joints and DOFs. The initial depth of the 2D object in the video is assigned from the matched results, and then propagated toward areas where the depth is missing to produce a complete depth map. For the effective handling of the complex silhouettes and appearances, we introduce a partial depth propagation method based on color segmentation to ensure the detail of the results. We compared the result and depth maps painted by experienced artists. The comparison shows that our method produces viable depth maps of humans in monocular videos efficiently.
The present study deals with the propagation of Love wave (a type of surface wave) in crustal layer having temperature dependent inhomogeneity. It is assumed that the inhomogeneity in the crustal layer arises due to linear temperature variation in rigidity and density. The upper boundary of the crustal layer is traction free. Numerical results for Love wave are discussed by plotting analytical curves between phase velocity against wave number and stress against depth in the presence of inhomogeneity and temperature parameters. The effects boundary condition on the Love wave propagation in the crustal layer is also analyzed. The results presented in this study would be useful for seismologists and geologists.
