  • This paper proposes a face tracking algorithm for a viewpoint adaptive multi-view synthesis system. The original scene captured by a depth camera contains a texture image and 8 bit gray-scale depth map. From this original image, multi-view images that correspond to the viewer's position can be synthesized using geometrical transformations, such as rotation and translation. The proposed face tracking technique gives a motion parallax cue by different viewpoints and view angles. In the proposed algorithm, the viewer's dominant face, which is established initially from a camera, can be tracked using the statistical characteristics of face colors and deformable templates. As a result, a motion parallax cue can be provided by detecting the viewer's dominant face area and tracking it, even under a heterogeneous background, and synthesized sequences can be displayed successfully.

  • Since 1984, many patients have been treated with Multiloop Edgewise Archwire (MEAW) Technique and diagnosed with ODI (Overbite Depth Indicator) and APDI (Anteroposterior Dysplasia Indicator) by the authors. 234 samples of them were selected randomly for the statistical analysis (age, sex, Angle's classification, treatment period, extraction, ODI etc.). Especially, ODI was analysed statistically and its application methods were reviewed. The results and conclusions were as follows: 1. On the 150 patients with normal overbite, the mean values of Class I, II, III malocclusion were $67.5^{\circ}$, $72.2^{\circ}$ and $59.0^{\circ}$. They were significantly different on the level of p < 0.01. 2. In normal overbite samples, ODI decreased with the increase of APDI and the correlation coefficient was -0.54. It seems that this result reflects the characteristics of AB to mandibular plane angle. 3. The regression equation was Y = - 0.57X + 114.64, where X is APDI and Y is ODI. In cases of small or large APDI, it seems to be absurd that the patient's ODI is compared with the mean ODI to differentiate diagnostically the open bite or deep bite tendency from the normal.

  • In this paper, a hardware architecture of phase calculator for 3D image processing is proposed. The designed phase calculator, which adopts a pipelined architecture to improve throughput, performs arctangent operation using vectoring mode of CORDIC algorithm. Fixed-point MATLAB modeling and simulations are carried out to determine the optimized bit-widths and number of iteration. Phase calculator designed in Verilog HDL is verified by emulating the restoration of virtual 3D data using MATLAB/Simulink and FPGA-in-the-loop verification.

  • The distributions of Cd, Cu, and Zn concentration in soil treated with one (1988) or two (1988 and 1993) applications of sewage sludge at rates of 0, 25, 50, and $100Mg\;ha^{-1}$ (dry weight basis) were determined to assess the accumulation and mobility of the heavy metals. The heavy metals accumulated almost entirely in 0 to 15 cm soil depths. Small amounts of the metals moved out of the tillage zone (0-15 cm depth) into the subsoil, but even at the high rate of sewage sludge, little movement of heavy metals occurred below 100 cm depth. The water-extractable Cd, Cu, and Zn concentrations were very low regardless of the rate of sewage sludge application. Availability of metals as determined by DTPA extraction showed the percentage of DTPA-extractable/total concentration increased with sewage sludge application. In the 0-15 cm depth of sewage sludge treated soil, the percentage of DTPA-extractable/total concentration was higher than 46% for Cd, but the value was less than 27% and 17% for Cu and Zn, respectively. The Cd, Cu, and Zn added to this calcareous clay soil by sewage sludge application were not very mobile, and the amount of plant available form was very small.

  • This paper describes the development of a simple and quantitative subsidence hazard estimation method appropriate to Korean coal mines using gangway depth information only. In spite of simpleness of estimation method, this new method gives good results close to those obtained using influence function method when applying to a virtual rectangular excavation model and to a closed mine where actual subsidence occurred. Therefore, this method can be effectively applied to the identification of zones liable to subsidence over closed coal mine in Korea where the shape of extraction is very complex and usually unknown.

  • In stereo vision, when we use two parallel axis images, small portion of object is contained and B/H(Base-line to Height) ratio is limited due to the size of object and depth information is inaccurate. To overcome these difficulities we take a non-parallel axis image which is rotated $\theta$ about y-axis and match other parallel-axis image. Epipolar lines of non-parallel axis image are not same as those of parallel-axis image and we can't match these two images directly. In this paper, we transform the non-parallel axis image geometrically with camera parameters, whose epipolar lines are alingned parallel. NCC(Normalized Cross Correlation) is used as match measure, area-based matching technique is used find correspondence and 9$\times$9 window size is used, which is chosen experimentally. Focal length which is necessary to get depth information of given object is calculated with least-squares method by CCD camera characteristics and lenz property. Finally, we select 30 test points from given object whose elevation is varied to 150 mm, calculate heights and know that height RMS error is 7.9 mm.

  • This paper proposes a novel method to convert monoscopic soccer videos to stereoscopic videos. Through the soccer video analysis process, we detect shot boundaries and classify soccer frames into long shot or non-long shot. In the long shot case, the depth mapis generated relying on the size of the extracted ground region. For the non-long shot case, the shot is further partitioned into three types by considering the number of ground blocks and skin blocks which is obtained by a simple skin-color detection method. Then three different depth assignment methods are applied to each non-long shot types: 1) Depth estimation by object region extraction, 2) Foreground estimation by using the skin block and depth value computation by Gaussian function, and 3)the depth map generation for shots not containing the skin blocks. This depth assignment is followed by stereoscopic image generation. Subjective evaluation comparing generated depth maps and corresponding stereoscopic images indicate that the proposed algorithm can yield the sense of depth from a single view images.

  • Information extraction can facilitate the intensive analysis of documents by providing semantic triples which consist of named entities and their relations recognized in the texts. However, most of the research so far has been carried out separately for named entity recognition and relation extraction as individual studies, and as a result, the effective performance evaluation of the entire information extraction systems was not performed properly. This paper introduces two models of end-to-end information extraction that can extract various entity names in clinical records and their relationships in the form of semantic triples, namely pipeline and joint models and compares their performances in depth. The pipeline model consists of an entity recognition sub-system based on bidirectional GRU-CRFs and a relation extraction module using multiple encoding scheme, whereas the joint model was implemented with a single bidirectional GRU-CRFs equipped with multi-head labeling method. In the experiments using i2b2/VA 2010, the performance of the pipeline model was 5.5% (F-measure) higher. In addition, through a comparative experiment with existing state-of-the-art systems using large-scale neural language models and manually constructed features, the objective performance level of the end-to-end models implemented in this paper could be identified properly.

  • This paper describes the method to reduce the time-cost for depth estimation of an image by learning, on the basis of the Genetic Algorithm, the image's features. The depth information is estimated from the relationship among features such as the energy value of an image and the gradient of the texture etc. The estimation-time increases due to the large dimension of an image's features used in the estimating process. And the use of the features without consideration of their importance can have an adverse effect on the performance. So, it is necessary to reduce the dimension of an image's features based on the significance of each feature. Evaluation of the method proposed in this paper using benchmark data provided by Stanford University found that the time-cost for feature extraction and depth estimation improved by 60% and the accuracy was increased by 0.4% on average and up to 2.5%.
