  • Traditionally, Anderson model is recognized as suitable for analysis of predictive factors for the use of medical and social services. Therefore, the present study was aimed to investigate the predictors of the elderly's use of the social service based on previous studies by configuring Anderson model's predisposing factors(gender, age, education level, place of residence, marital status), enabling factors(economic status, health literacy, use of welfare center or not), and need factors(whether held chronic disease, IADL and depression). To this aim, SPSS 18.0 was used for the subject of 329 elderly living in Chungbuk region. The main findings of this study are as follows. The most influential factor on the social service use of the elderly turned out to be whether to use the welfare centers and health literacy of enabling factors. Next, the depressed levels showed the most significant impact among the need factors, and gender was the most influential among the predisposing factors. Based on the results of these studies, some measures were suggested to activate the elderly's use of social services.

The memoir writing program used in this study focused especially on enhancing the cognitive skills by providing priming and retrieval support for memory performance in reminiscing past experiences. All fourteen participants were healthy and normal community dwellers and attended four-month long programof memoir writing classes which are consisted of different themes for each week. The aim of this study was to examine if the memoir writing program would render the positive effect on mental health and cognitive ability of the elderly. The results were that quality of life, life satisfaction, ego integrity of the participants showed positive change and the level of depression was significantly reduced compared to that of the control group. The findings in the present study suggest that the memoir writing can serve as one of the community initiative program to the growing population of the elderly for their emotional and cognitive challenges that they face everyday. To warrant the validity of the program, further study is needed for other sectors of elderly population, such as elderly living alone or those with both physical and/or cognitive disadvantages.

Results : The HAMD and PTQ scores of the participants after the group positive psychotherapy were higher than before the psychotherapy. A correlation between the age of patients and improvement of symptoms after group positive psychotherapy was found : the older the patients were, the better the improvements were. Conclusion : The study shows that group positive psychotherapy in the elderly living alone is effective in improving the symptoms of depressive disorder. The participant's age was found to be a factor that affects the improvement of depressive disorder symptoms.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify the predictors of self-care behaviors among elderly patients with hypertension using quantile regression method. Methods: A total of 253 elderly patients diagnosed with hypertension was recruited via 3 different medical clinics for the study. The quantile regression and a liner regression was conducted using Stata 12.0 program by analyzing predictors of self-care behaviors. Results: In the ordinary least square, self-efficacy, period of disease, and education level explained 42% of the variance in self-care activities. In the quantile regression, affecting predictors of self-care behaviors were self-efficacy for all quantiles, the period of disease for from 60% quantile to 90% quantile, education level for 20%, 30%, and 50% quantiles, economic status for 10%, 50%, and 60% quantiles, age for 10%, 70% quantiles, fatigue for 10% quantile, knowledge about hypertension for 10% and 20% quantiles, and depression for 30% and 40% quantiles. Conclusion: The affecting predictors of self-care behaviors among elderly with hypertension were different from the level of self-care behaviors. These results indicated the significance in assessing predictors according to the level of self-care behaviors when clinical nurses examine the patients' health behaviors and plan any intervention strategies. Specially, education level and knowledge about hypertension were the significant predictors of self-care activities for low quantiles. Clinical nurses may promote self-care activities of the given population though health education programs.

  • Meta-analysis was conducted on 56 studies published in Korea until April 2017 to systematically integrate factors of ego integrity of the elderly. The variables related to ego integrity were divided into 6 groups of variable, and the effect sizes were computed for each variable of their groups. The analysis results are as follows. First, the total effect size showed the middle effect size, and the effect size according to the variable group showed the largest effect size for the positive psychological variable group, followed by the negative psychological variable, the physical variable, the familial variable, the social variable and the demographic variable. Second, the largest effect size of the sub-variables on the each individual variable group showed positive psychological variable was life quality, negative psychological variable was depression, physical variable was health behavior, familial variable was children relationship, social variable was social support and demographic variable was economic status. As described above, suggesting that these variables may have a strong influence on ego integrity among the variables related to ego integrity because the quality of life, life satisfaction and depression were shown as the largest effective variables related to ego integrity.

  • The purpose of this study was to promote an understanding of suicidal ideation and identify the factors that influence suicide ideation according to the life cycle of Korean adults. This study was a secondary analysis study using the Korea Health Panel 2016 data. Among adults over 19 years of age, 14,538 people with no missing values in suicidal ideation and influencing factors were classified into young adults (19-39 years old), middle-aged adults (40-64 years old), and the elderly (65 years or over). The data were analyzed by multiple logistic regression. The results showed that 2.9% (108 people) of young adults, 3.2% (181 people) of middle-aged adults, and 3.7% (80 people) of the elderly had suicide ideation over the past year. Factors influencing suicidal ideation by life cycle were anxiety, depression, drug use and quality of life for young adults, subjective health status, stress, anxiety, depression, drug use and quality of life for middle-aged adults. The factors affecting the elderly were body mass index, stress, anxiety, depression, and quality of life. Therefore, factors influencing suicidal ideation should be considered as a major factor for screening risk groups according to the life cycle, and differentiated intervention programs should be developed and provided to prevent and manage suicide in risk groups.
