  • In the globalization and free trade era, the current account deficit problem is a common phenomenon experienced by most countries, both developing and developed countries. Also with managed floating regime of exchange rate, it becomes very important to analyze the dynamics of current account balance which determine the trade. The deficit condition has lasted for four years in Indonesia, as well the deficit value above the value of the surplus that has been experienced during the period 2005-2011. This study is firstly aim to examine the condition of the deficit which happens in the export and import, manufactured goods and oil and gas, whether related to the transaction of goods and services. We try to build a predicted model which near the actual. Then, the focuses examines an exchange rate volatility impact on current account deficit. The model used in this research is a simultaneous model of Indonesia current account deficit from 2005 to 2014. The simulation result indicated that depreciation increase surplus to current account deficit. The decrease of export manufactured goods (non oil and gas) higher than the increase of import. For the oil and gas sector, depreciation of the rupiah against the US dollar results in an increased burden of higher oil and gas imports due to import transactions.

  • This study is the first to scrutinize how real effective exchange rate, together with the vehicle currency exchange rate, asymmetrically influences the total trade balance between ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and the EU (European Union). This research employs quarterly data between 2000Q1 and 2018Q1, which is derived from several sources. We introduce a method for constructing the double-aggregated real effective exchange rate between ASEAN and the EU that captures the roles of all their currencies. Moreover, we propose the formula to compute vehicle currency exchange rate to assess the importance of vehicle currency in ASEAN-EU trade. Additionally, as asymmetrical impacts of exchange rate on trade balance are well documented by current studies, we employ Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model of Shin et al. (2014) to analyze the impacts of currency depreciation as well as appreciation in detail. The findings confirm the prominence of USD as vehicle currency in ASEAN-EU trade. Both depreciation and appreciation of ASEAN's currencies against USD can foster ASEAN's trade balance in the long run. Short-run asymmetrical impacts as well as J-curve effect are found in the vehicle currency models only. The results are robust for the cases of EU-28 and EU-27.

  • This study investigates the effects of real exchange rate (RER) on firm level mark-up and export. Using firm level data in Daegu-Gyeongbuk manufacturing industries during 2006-2013, we find that firms adjust their markup in response to the RER changes and this adjustment is heterogeneous with respect to firm and industry characteristics. In particular, an increase in markup following the RER depreciation is greater for firms with lower intermediate input import and higher industry concentration. However, productive firms in this region increase their export, instead of markup, during the RER depreciation. This implies that the productive firms in the region may not retain significant market power: They do not change the final price in local currency to increase selling volume during the RER depreciation (the export price in foreign currency decreases).

  • The short-term impact of the recent depreciation of Korean Won on the cost of the Korean logistics industry, which was caused by the global liquidity crisis began from the American financial market in 2007, is analyzed through the inter-industry analysis. The input-output data of the 2007 benchmark input-output accounts table which was most recently published by the Bank of Korea in 2009 have been utilized for the analysis. The results show that the cost of the Korean logistics industry as a whole rises 4.24% when the Korean exchange rate is depreciated by 10%. The impact of the depreciation of Korean exchange rate on the cost of the Korean logistics industry for December, 2007 ~ December, 2008 is estimated to be about 31.1 billion Won. If the Korean logistics companies should cover the rising cost of 11.7 billion Won only through sales promotion, then they should sell 1.9 times as much their current sales amount, which means 101.6 billion Won's worth of sales should be made.

  • The total area of domestic reclaimed lands is 54,379 ha, and among these, 30,394 ha can be agriculturally available. To increase an agricultural availability of reclaimed land, controlled horticultural products that can be highly profitable have come to the fore. However, as being characteristically concerning, when original glasshouse is intactly applied in reclaimed land, it is unsafe on account of ground subsidence and, even if ground were reinforced, it has a problem by high cost. So a new greenhouse model would be necessary taking into account not only cost-efficiency but also safety with relatively light-weight one. Before this, this paper estimated acceptance rate of controlled horticultural complexes in reclaimed land and new greenhouse model for 414 farmers. The annual rental fee is 129,712,500 won/ha, considering the interest rate (2.5 %) of the investment, the depreciation cost of the facilities (straight line depreciation method, 20 years of service life estimated), and government subsidy rate (50 %) which resulted in a sufficient number of intended tenants with the acceptance rate of 0.33. The results of this paper may contribute to the government's policies for reclaimed land.

  • The estimation of mortality characteristics of industrial property is an important adjunct to engineering valuation and depreciation estimation. Once the important of depreciation estimation is determined, it is desirable to understand the processes upon which these estimates are based. The Iowa type survivor curves are a set of generalized retirement dispersion models. These curves were based on analysis of actual retirement experience and represent typical retirement behavior patterns likely to be encountered. The retirement rate of Iowa type survivor curves on the semiconductor equipments in Korea industry was estimated by the life estimation process. In this paper, estimates of service lives based on directly observed data of the domestic semiconductor equipments are presented.

  • Given the limited availability of data in South Korea, this study proposes a method by which to estimate regional capital stock by modifying the benchmark year method (BYM) and applies it to estimate regional net capital stock by sector in transport infrastructure. First, it estimates time-varying sectoral depreciation rates using the sectoral net capital stock and the investment amount for each period. Second, it estimates the net capital stock of each period using the net capital stock in the base year and the investment in each period. Third, in order to ensure that the sum of net capital stocks by region is equal to the nationwide estimate, the national estimates are allocated to each region according to the proportion of the values derived from the previous stage. The proposed method can alleviate well-known problems associated with conventional BYMs, specifically the upward bias and arbitrary choice of the depreciation rate.

  • This paper introduces a two-sector model to analyze the real and monetary determinants of Korea's real exchange rate. So far, most studies on Korea's exchange rate have concentrated on the behavior of nominal exchange rate, but this study proposes a dynamic model of real exchange rate behavior in developing countries and estimates the real and financial determinants of Korea's real exchange rate behavior. The estimation was performed over the period of 1980-89. The results show many interesting things. First, the monetary and fiscal expansion led to a real appreciation, which suggests that the monetary and fiscal stances be kept sound for a real depreciation. Second, the improvement in the terms of trade led to a real depreciation. This experience is in the contrast to the popular view that the improvement in the terms of trade will result in a real appreciation. Third, the productivity growth led to a real appreciation, but this effect of the Ricardo-Balassa type was not significant. Finally, the nominal devaluation was quite effective to produce a real depreciation. This result also supports Korea's exchange rate policy in the 1980s which was based upon the real target approach instead of nominal anchor approach.

  • This study examines ERPT with asymmetric response and both import and export market shares, using wool trade data. The study found that, asymmetric response may be as common as symmetric response. In addition, the responses (both in price and quantity demanded) to the changes in exchange rate are considerably different across goods, and even for the homogenous goods, across countries. In case of depreciation, the export price changes more than appreciation case in general, and as a result the destination price changes less. It is also found that the cases of excessive or perverse pass-through are found more frequently than reported by previous studies. This finding points out that strategic behavior of firms or unexpected response to exchange rate fluctuation takes place more frequently than we commonly expect or take, in particular at disaggregated levels. When the model considers asymmetric responses of the export price to appreciation and depreciation (of exporter's currency), the estimation provided that for 39 trade cases out of 83, export price responded to appreciation and depreciation in different fashions, although the normal response was the dominating phenomenon with 99 cases or about 60% out of 166 cases. Market shares affected the extent and direction of responses in select cases. These findings will have important implications for policy makers and traders.

  • The current method of rate adjustment for inflation is based on the evaluation of the financial performance of hospitals. The method has the disadvantage such as too complicated, expensive process as well as low reliability. This study, therefore, develops the 'Korean Medical Insurance Economic Index(MIEI)' as a new model for the rate adjustment with the use of the macro economic indices. In addition, we calculate the 1992∼1998 rate adjustment with the MIEI, and examines the validity of the MIEI by comparing with the conventional method. Medical costs are classified into nine categories : physician salaries, nurse·pharmacist·medical technician salaries, assistants & others salaries, material cost(by imports), material cost(by domestics), depreciation & rent paid(by imports), depreciation & rent paid(by domestics), power utilities, other administrative costs. Then the category weight which is the ratio of category in the total cost is calculated. Macro economic indices are selected for each cost category in order to reflect the concept of the each cost category and inflation during the year of 1992∼1998. Finally MIEI which integrate all category according to the category weight and selected macro indices is calculated. The mean of hospital MIEI which weighting by amount paid by insurers was cacluated. The result from the application of empirical data to the MIEI model is very similar to that of the current method. Furthermore, this method is very simple and also easy to get social consensus. This MIEI model can be replaced the current method based on the analysis of the financial performance for the adjustment of medical fees.
