  • Tin dioxide, $SnO_2$, is a well-known n-type semiconductor that shows change in resistance in the presence of gas molecules, such as $H_2$, CO, and $CO_2$. Considerable research has been done on $SnO_2$ semiconductors for gas sensor applications due to their noble property. The nanomaterials exhibit a high surface to volume ratio, which means it has an advantage in the sensing of gas molecules. In this study, SnO nanoplatelets were grown densely on Si substrates using a thermal CVD process. The SnO nanostructures grown by the vapor transport method were post annealed to a $SnO_2$ phase by thermal CVD in an oxygen atmosphere at $830^{\circ}C$ and $1030^{\circ}C$. The pressure of the furnace chamber was maintained at 4.2 Torr. The crystallographic properties of the post-annealed SnO nanostructures were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and XRD. The change in morphology was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. As a result, the SnO nanostructures were transformed to a $SnO_2$ phase by a post-annealing process.

  • Seadike is a coastal structure constructed in the rear region of the foreshore to maximize its usability by preventing direct effect of wave. The expected construction field is determined under the design wave and tidal condition where minor wave overtopping is anticipated. Thus, the location of seadike is generally fixed at the highest site of the surrounding area with seadike crest height controlling the permissible range of wave overtopping volume. But a lot of times, frontal sand beach of the seadike continuously deforms due to incident waves, resulting failure in maintaining its initial slope. The erosion and deposition of the seadike front cause changes in the crest height and volume of wave overtopping and decrease in the setting depth of the seadike, which endangers seadike region as a result. In this study, the relation of local scouring and setting depth of the seadike front in the run-up region is examined by using 2D hydraulic model tests and numerical simulations by modified SBEACH model. As a result, the study learned that if appropriate boundary condition is applied to the modified SBEACH model, it is possible to create practical estimations on the local scouring at the seadike foot when erosive waves flow into the region.

  • The activity of the liver cells of greenling, Agrammus agrammus were histologically investigated under photo-and electron microscopy, and studied by comparing seasonal changes of hepatosomatic index (HSI). The materials were monthly collected at the costal area of Tongbaeksom, Pusan, Korea, from September 1983 to August 1984. The annual variations of HSI of male were not distinct, but those of HSI in female began to increase in autumn, and reached the maximum in winter when the ovary was getting mature. During the period of yolk accumulation in the oocytes, the female liver and its hepatic cells were seen to large and nuclei and nucleoli were hypertrophic also. At this time the amounts of glycogen and lipid in the cells gradually decreased, while basophilic substance (RNA) increased. And well-developed granular endoplasmic reticula binding ribosomes were supposed to play the leading role in protein synthesis and deposition for vitellogenin in the cystoplasm. Just prior to spawning, glycogen and lipid droplets were decreased, but basophilic substances(RNA) were found in a high concentration especially at the peripheral region of the liver cells of females. In the liver cells of males, were hardly altered by gonadal maturation, basophilic substances gradually increased, glycogen particles and lipid droplets were still observed in large quantities. After spawning, basophilic subtances decreased in the liver cells of female and male.

  • In this study, core sediments and pore water were analysed to identify the origin of organic matter and Bas in late Quaternary sediments from the northwestern Ulleung Basin of the East Sea. C/N and C/S ratios in the sediments show that the organic matter in the study area originated predominantly from marine algae. However, the results of Rock-Eval pyrolysis indicate that the organic matter has an origin of the land-plant (Type III), locating in the immature stage. These different results might be due to the heavy oxidizing of the organic matter during sinking down to the seafloor or after deposition in the sediments. Concentration of sulfate in the pore water decreases gradually with core depth, while concentration of $CH_4$ increases gradually with core depth. This indicates that sulfate reduction and methanogenesis occurred actively in the sediments. Also, it is likely that the compositions of $CH_4$ are characterized as a more biogenic origin, mostly caused by microbial activity, rather than a thermogenic one.

  • The basement rock of upper stream of Keum River Valley consists of Precambrian gneiss which is resistant to weathering. That of mid and lower stream valley, however, is mainly composed of Mesozoic granites which are vulnerable to weathering. The upstream part of Geum River Basin is typified by the deeply-incised and steep meandering streams, whereas mid and lower part is characterized by wide floodplain and gently dipping river bottom toward the Yellow Sea. In particular flooding deposits, in which are imprinted a number of repetitions of erosion and sedimentation during the Holocene, are widely distributed in the lower stream of Geum River Basin. For understanding of erosions in the mid and lower stream of Geum River Basin, the rate of erosion of each small basins were estimated by using the data of field survey, erosional experiments and GIS ananlysis. It was revealed that erosion rate appeared highest in granite areas, and overall areas, in this field survey were represented by relatively high erosion rates. By implemeatation of remote sensing and imagery data, the temporal changes of river bed sediments for about last 11 years were successfully monitored. Observed as an important phenomenon is that the river bed has been risen since 1994 when an embankment (Dyke) was constructed in the estuarine river mouth. From the results derived from the detailed river bed topographical map made in this investigation, the sedimentation of the lower river basin is considered to be deposited with about 5 cm/year for the last 11 years. Based on this river bed profile analysis by HEC-6 module, it is predicted that Geum River bed of Ganggyeong area is continuously rising up in general until 2004. Although extraction of a large amount of aggregates from Gongju to Ganggyung areas, the Ganggyung lower stream shows the distinct sedimentation. Therefore, it is interpreted that the active erosions of tributary basins Geum drainage basins can affect general river bed rising changes of Geum River.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the composition and diagenesis of the carbonate rocks from the seamounts in the Federated States of Micronesia, Central Pacific. Most of the samples were dredged from the water depth of about 1000-3000 m mainly in Chuuk Island, Hunter Bank, Caroline Ridge and Yap Trench. The carbonate rocks are either pelagic sediment mainly of planktonic foraminifera or shallow-marine sediment of corals, calcareous algae, mollusks and echinoderms. The rocks are altered texturally and chemically, except for those from the Hunter Bank and Yap A. The presence of shallow-marine cements suggests that the carbonate sediment has been subsided or reworked to the present water depth after deposition in shallow-marine environments. The texture of the carbonate sediment is reminiscent of meteoric diagenesis; however, the stable carbon isotopic composition of the altered rock samples shows affinity with that of sea water and the oxygen isotopic values are slightly enriched or same as compared to those of unaltered samples. These stable isotopic data suggest that the carbonate sediment of the study area has been diagenetically altered in the present deep-marine environment.

  • A sedimentation analysis has been attempted to figure out sedimentation environment due to construction of coastal jetties, such as fish harbor dike, flow guided dike and jetty in shallow Kusipo area, in which tidal range marks up to 6.6 meters in spring tide. As an initial approach of understanding field measurement were done on several stations along reference lines with total station and photo analysis taken by remote controlled small air craft far one and half years. Also numerical tests were done by 2-D ADCIRC model considering dry-wet treatment to evaluate flow and bottom shear stress variations. According to direct measurement, deposition seems to be dominant on Kusipo beach. Model results show bottom shear stress lessens to $0.10{\sim}0.15\;N/m^2$ on most shadow zone of jetties and the inner zone is suffering sedimentation as a result of dike construction. However this is the first approach with limited analysis, thus it should be dealt further considering physical characteristics of bottom sediments in a complete sediment model on upcoming study.

  • The Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag hydrothermal vein type deposits which comprise the Dongil and Dong-cheogogsan mines occur within the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in the Euiseong Basin of the southern Korean peninsula. The ore mineralization is contained within three stage(I,II and III) quartz and calcite veins. Ore minerals occur as dominant chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, tetrahedrite and Pb, Ag, Sb and Bi-bearing sulfosalts. Stage I ore minerals were deposited between $400^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ from the fluid with moderate salinities(7.0 to 4.5 eq. wt. % NaCl). Evidence of boiling suggests pressure of less than 150 bars during stage I mineralization. This pressure corresponds to maximum depths of 650 m and 1700 m, respectively, assuming lithostatic and hydrostatic loads. The data on mineralogy, temperature and salinity, together with information on the solubility of Cu complex, suggest that Cu deposition is a result of boiling coupled with declining temperature from $350^{\circ}$ to $250^{\circ}C$ or declining log $a_{o_2}$(from -29.8 to -35.9 atm.)and increasing in pH. Pb, Ag, Sb and Bi-bearing sulfosalts were deposited by cooling and dilution at temperature of less than $250^{\circ}C$ from the ore fluid with less than -35.9 atm. of log $a_{o_2}$.

  • The Hongjeom formation of the Pyeongan Supergroup in the Munkyeong coalfield mainly consists of metapsammite and metapelites. Metampelites occur as slate preserving chloritoid+chlorite+muscovite and andalusite+biotite+chlorite+muscovite mineral assemblages. Chloritoid and andalusite occur as porphyroblast, and the matrix composed of fine-grained micas. Metamorphic P-T conditions for these mineral assemblages are $510-520^{\circ}C$ and 3.0-3.5kbar based on P-T pseudosection in $MnO-K_2O-FeO-MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2-H_2O(MnKFMASH)$ system and isopleth intersections of Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratios in chloritoid and chlorite. The medium temperature and low pressure metamorphism resulted from a higher geothermal gradient ($40-45^{\circ}C/km$) condition than that of burial metamorphism. The youngest (SHRIMP U-Pb age; ca. 327-310 Ma) detrital zircon grains from the Hongjeom formation display oscillatory zoning and relatively high Th/U ratio (0.60-1.12). Based on the previous sedimentary, paleontological, and geochronological studies in the Taebaeksan basin together with results of this study, we suggest that (1) initial deposition of the Hongjeom formation was contemporaneous with a magmatic activity in the provenance, (2) the Pyeongan Supergroup was deposited in an arc-related basin at an active continental margin during the Carboniferous to Permain, and (3) magmatic activities occurred repetitively in relatively short interval in the active continental margin had continuously supplied sediments to the basin.

  • The nano or micro sized structures of conducting polymer had been prepared by synthesizing the desired polymer within the pores of template of nano or micro porous membrane filter. In this study, we had tried to fabricate conducting polymer microstructures on an electrode by using electrochemical deposition adopting template synthesis. Our attention was focused on two different things, attaching template on the electrode and fabricating microstructures only at limited areas of the electrode. A conducting polymer, PEDiTT (poly 3,4-ethylenedithi-athiophene) solution was blended with PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) solution and used as an conducting adhesive. After attaching template membrane, the electrode were immersed in 0.5M pyrrole in 0.1M KCI solution, and electrochemical polymerization was performed. The growth process of the microstructures studied by SEM. The electrochemical fabrication of conducting polymer was performed by using two-electrode system. A large working electrode and a micro scale disc electrode were used for the confined area synthesis. Polymerization potential was 4V in an electrolytic solution made of KCI in deionized water. The optimum polymerization conditions were, i.e. (4V/100sec) for $250{\mu}m$ electrode and (6V/30 sec) for $10{\mu}m$ electrode.
