  • The timing and extent of glaciations during the Late Quaternary in the South Shetland Islands, West Antarctica were defined using field mapping, geomorphic analysis and radiocarbon dating. Landforms of glacial erosion and deposition, in particular subglacial meltwater channel erosion, suggest that at least three glaciations occurred during the late Quaternary within the study region. During the global LGM, glacial troughs (such as Maxwell Bay and Admiralty Bay) were overdeepened by an ice stream moving south from $an\sim1000m-thick$ ice cap centered on the present-day continental shelf to the north. This ice was responsible for the subglacial meltwater channel erosion, and glacial polished and striated bedrock on the Fildes Peninsula. The recent local glaciations occurred about 2,000 years ago and during Little Ice Age (LIA). During these glaciations, glaciers were less extensive than the previous one and less erosive as a cold-based ice

  • The concentrations and loads of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wet deposition were investigated at Chungbuk National University in Cheongju, Chungbuk. Event based precipitation samples were collected during 1998 to 2003. The precipitation-weighted mean concentrations of pollutants were 0.60 mg/L for TN, 0.014 mg/L for TP, and 4.8 mg/L for COD, which were smaller than its arithmetic mean concentrations by 26% for TN, 18% for TP, and 14% for COD. The concentrations of TN, TP, and COD significantly decreased with precipitation. Mean concentrations of pollutants in spring (March-May) were higher than in other seasons likely due to dust caused by wind erosion and sand-dust storms, pollen etc. Significant relationships were determined between TN and TP, and TN and COD. Annual loads of wet deposition averaged 7.9 kg/ha$\cdot$yr for TN, 0.19 kg/ha$\cdot$yr for TP, and 63.9 kg/ha$\cdot$yr for COD, which are almost identical to the values of TN and TP but slightly higher than COD value reported in Japan.

  • Due to their slow degradation properties, hydrophobic organic contaminants in estuarine sediment have been a concern for risks to human health and aquatic organisms. Studies of fate and transport of these contaminants in estuaries are further complicated by the fact that hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes in these regions are complex, involving processes with various temporal and spatial scales. In order to simulate and quantify long-term attenuation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) in the Elizabeth River, VA, we develop a modeling approach, which employs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's water quality model, WASP, and encompasses key physical and chemical processes that govern long-term fate and transport of PAHs in the river. In this box-model configuration, freshwater inflows mix with ocean saline water and tidally averaged dispersion coefficients are obtained by calibration using measured salinity data. Sediment core field data is used to estimate the net deposition/erosion rate, treating only either the gross resuspension or deposition rate as the calibration parameter. Once calibrated, the model simulates fate and transport PAHs following the loading input to the river in 1967, nearly 4 decades ago. Sediment PAH concentrations are simulated over 1967-2022 and model results for Year 2002 are compared with field data measured at various locations of the river during that year. Sediment concentrations for Year 2012 and 2022 are also projected for various remedial actions. Since all the model parameters are based on empirical field data, model predictions should reflect responses based on the assumptions that have been governing the fate and sediment transport for the past decades.

  • In this experiment molybdeum oxide($MoO_3$) films were prepared by a magnetic null discharge(MND) sputtering system and fundamental properties by XRD, XPS and SEM analysis were investigated. The initial and mean insulation resistance of the same with $MoO_3$ film were about 1.4[$M{\Omega}$] and 800[$k{\Omega}$] under the condition of applied voltage of 400[V]. The preferred orientation in the films changed from(100) to (210) with substrate temperature. Two XPS peaks of the $MoO_3$ photoelectron were detected at the binding energies of 228.9[eV] and 232.4[eV], while the binding energy of the O1s peak was 532.6[eV]. The substrate temperature and reactivity gives large effects to the structure and growth of the film and system is also very useful for performing the uniform reactive deposition. It can be found from the result of a $MoO_3$ film deposition that the system is very useful for performing the uniform reactive sputtering.

  • Camera monitoring of topographical changes of intertidal flat was performed at Daehang-ri mud flat outside Semangeum sea dike No. 1, where creation of mud flat was reported after sea dike construction. Ground survey on the mud flat is often limited only to points or few line surveys because of difficulty of walking and limitation of working hours by flood/ebb. This study uses natures of tide that the water lines moving on the intertidal flat during a flood indicate depth contours between low and high tide. Ground coordinates for the water lines extracted from the consecutive images of intertidal flat are calculated and information of topography is acquired by integrating all the water line data. Analysis of 6 camera monitoring data between September 2005 and September 2009 shows 0.127 m deposition per year on the average and variation of deposition/erosion in space and time.

  • The thermal barrier coating must withstand erosion when subjected to flowing gas and should also maintain good stability and mechanical properties while it must also protect the turbine component from high temperature, hot corrosion, creep, and oxidation during operation. In this study we investigated the influence of subsurface layer, $Al_2O_3$ or NiCrCoAIY bond coat layer, on the indentation damage behavior of YSZ thermal barrier coating layers deposited by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). The bond coat is deposited using different process such as air plasma spray (APS) or spray of high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) and the thickness is varied. Hertzian indentation technique is used to induce micro damages on the coated layer. The stress-strain behaviors are characterized by results of the indentation tests.

  • The purpose of this paper is estimating of the amount of debris flow in hazard area using terrestrial LiDAR surveying data. Jecheon area was selected for this study. Then, the surveyed LiDAR information of DEM and 1:5000 digital map of DEM have been compared with each other and the amount of debris flow has been estimated. The result of this study was shown that the amount of erosion was $24,150m^3$ and deposition was $14,296m^3$. Well shape of channelized debris flow, hillslope debris and deposition at the bending reach of a channel can be found in the area. This study on estimation of the amount of debris flow was expected to provide more informations for debris flow of disaster mitigation and simulation work.

  • The origins of beaches at Byeonsan Peninsular, as a pocket type, are classified to a sand barrier type and wave-cut type. The beaches had developed by the deposition of the silt and clay layers on the 10m height from sea level in the inner bay during climax era of postglacial transgression. At that time, some sands had blown toward the inland hills to form aeolian deposits. After postglacial sea-level stabilization, sometimes, there has been the negative budget of beach materials. Recently, beaches have been transformed by human impact such as construction of Saemangeum sea-wall, especially in the Byeonsan and Gosapo beaches being close to the sea-wall. So the speed of tidal currents become slower and comparatively depositoinal activity stronger. And the level of chemical weathering has been higher. In Byeonsan beach, the ratio of coarse sand decreased with higher ratio of finer materials and by beach erosion dissected runnels developed, running parallel to the coastline. In Gosapo beach, supply of suspended materials are increased through the Garyeok drainage gate, the sands tend to be finer.

  • The Saemangeum tidal flat with an area of approxirnately $233km^2$ is one of the biggest estuarine tidal flats on the west coast of Korea. Because of its location in the estuary of Mangyeong and Dongjin Rivers, the tidal flat receives large amount of sediments. A 33-km long sea dyke, enclosing a coastal zone of $401km^2$, was constructed to reclaim tidal flat in the Saemangeum area. The dyke construction radically changes the local tidal current regime and estuarine circulation. These have an effect on sedimentary environments in the tidal flat. On the tidal flats of the study area net deposition occurred, but net erosion occurred near tidal channel in 2004. The comparison of topography and surface sediments in summer 2004 with those in summer 1988 before the dyke construction showed that elevation increased with maximum 80cm and mean grain sizes were fining at Gwanghwal tidal flats. Sedimentary facies of two cores from Gwanghwal tidal flat revealed homogeneous layers in the upper part suggesting rapid deposition after the dyke construction. The sedimentation rate in Gwanghwal tidal flat(GW 6) using $^{210}Pb$ analysis was about 5.4cm/yr which is well matched with the sedimentation pattern revealed by change in topography.
