  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of three different retention forms on the bond strength when complete denture repaired. Total 75 samples were divided into 3 groups(Dove-tail form, bevel form, rabbit form). The completed resin samples were compressed in Instron Testing Machine until gross fracture occurred to examine the effect on the bond strength of resin base. The results of the experiment were as follows : 1. The difference of bond strength according to three retention forms were not statistically significant(P>0.05). 2. Dove-tail form was strongest to bond strength among the three retention forms.

  • Fabrication of complete denture with suction mechanism was introduced to enhance the retention and stability of denture by sealing around the denture border by forming negative pressure on the inner side of denture base during functional movement such as swallowing or masticating. Mandibular suction dentures reduce denture dislodging force during opening by taking preliminary impression without pressure on retromolar pad area in rest position. In this case, fabrication of complete denture using suction mechanism for an edentulous patient with severe alveolar bone resorption allowed us to clinically enhance retention and stability of denture and improve satisfaction of patient.

  • It is very difficult to achieve denture support, stability and retention in single-maxillary complete denture patients with flabby tissue. A 57-year-old male patient was uncomfortable with the existing denture and wanted treatment. The reduction of flabby tissue was confirmed using the treatment denture. Non-pressure impression was obtained using an intraoral scanner during the definitive denture process. This is reported because the resulting denture improved when observing the retention, support and stability of the denture during occlusion.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influencing factors of removable dentures satisfaction in the elderly. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 256 elderly in Jeollanam-do from September 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, denture related characteristics systemic health characteristics and dental health behavior. Removable dentures satisfaction was adapted from Ban. The questionnaire for Removable dentures satisfaction included general treatment satisfaction, masticatory function satisfaction, denture retention satisfaction, aesthetic satisfaction measured by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.850 in the study. Data were analyzed for a t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis by using SPSS(SPSS 18.0, USA) program. Results: According to subjective and systemic health condition and oral health condition, there was a statistically significant increase in general satisfaction of treatment, masticatory satisfaction of function, denture satisfaction of retention, aesthetic satisfaction. The overall satisfaction for removable denture showed a significant improvement. In the multiple regression analysis, variation of removable denture satisfaction was positively associated with oral health status{good(b=0.736, p=0.000)}, denture treatment services{dental hospital clinic(b=0.327, p=0.023)}, and systemic health status{good(b=0.241, p=0.047)}. Conclusions: Satisfaction of removable dentures may have a positive impact on oral health condition, hospital type, and associated systemic disease. It is necessary to develop incremental care programs for oral health and systemic health and to make public opinion to encourage the program.

  • At the department of prosthodontics, the elderly patients with severely atrophied alveolar ridge who have been wearing complete dentures for a long period frequently visit the clinic. In general, the open-mouth impression technique for manufacturing a mandibular complete denture to secure primary support on buccal shelf area has been prevalent. In addition, for securing retention and stability of mandibular denture, we should consider diagnosis, oral function, denture border, occlusal plane, teeth arrangement, and patient training, etc.. But in edentulous patients with severe alveolar bone atrophy, it may hardly secure retention and stability of mandibular complete denture. To promote these, some of clinicians are making an attempt manufacturing the mandibular complete dentures using closed-mouth impression technique based on several reports that compare various impression techniques including open-mouth and closed-mouth impression technique. This case report suggests closed-mouth impression technique may promote retention and stability of mandibular complete denture and compares between the two impression techniques clinically.

  • Conical crown-retained denture (CCRD) has been used as a very effective treatment method in cases with few remaining teeth with heterogeneous prognosis. However, in spite of many advantages of CCRD, high technical failure rate was a problem to be considered. Incorrect path of insertion and excessive retention were thought to be the main cause of technical failure and to result from laboratory procedure with a coping misfit and/or a coping transfer error. In order to prevent this error, secure anchoring of inner coping and re-examination and milling of convergence angle were recommended on the master model from pick-up impression.

  • Statment of problem : Little in known about the importance of selection of various double crowns as retainer in determining the outcome of treatment with double crown retained removable partial denture. Purpose : To obtain information about the effects and the results of this treatment modality. Material and methods : This study describes 61 double crown retained removable partial dentures worn by 51 patients from Samsung Medical Center, Seoul a time ranging between 6 and 48 months and evaluate occlusal contacts on the denture teeth, denture movement, incidence of denture relining, denture retention, fracture of dentures and abutments, hygiene, residual ridge inflammatory changes, number of lost abutment,. interruption of denture use. Results : One tenth of all the restorations were relined. Restorations in 21 arches fractured repeatedly for various reasons . There was no apparent interrelationship between fractures and the five groups. Conclusion : Good prognoses of removable partial dentures were shown in all groups(Kennedy Classes I, II, III, combination and few remaining abutment).

  • When oral cancer is occured, one may experience problems such as lip defect, necrosis of periodontal tissue and cervical caries caused by radiotherapy. According to ADI (Association of dental implantology), recent radiotherapy on jaw bone could be a relative contraindication of implant treatment. Due to this controversy, in most cases, treatment is done with removable dentures rather than implants. Especially, lip defect caused by an oral cancer operation have a serious repercussion on the retention of the denture. In this case report, patient with upper lip cancer had undergone resection primarily and secondary radiotherapy was done periodically. As a result, upper teeth of patient were extracted gradually and lower teeth showed very poor periodontal status. Therefore, Polident$^{(R)}$ denture adhesive cream (GlaxoSmithKline, London, England) was applied on maxillary complete denture to overcome reduced retention due to the lip defect and double crown RPD with friction pin was applied on the mandible successfully for two years.

  • Conventional denture impression techniques have limitations for edentulous patients with severe alveolar bone resorption and can cause problems from excessive border extension. Especially when a patient has movable tissue it is difficult to make accurate impression, thus might interrupt stable seating of complete denture. Fabrication of complete denture using closed mouth technique for edentulous patient with severe ridge resorption is thought to provide better stability and retention. In this case, an 86-year-old patient had both edentulous jaws with epulis fissuratum on maxillary anterior ridge and severe mandibular ridge resorption. Thus, tentative vertical dimension was determined by using Centric trayand individual tray attached with gothic arch tracer was fabricated. Complete denture was fabricated using closed mouth technique and the patient was satisfied with better stability and retention of the complete denture.

  • The author conducted an clinical study of closed mouth impression technique with a case of complete denture patient of favorable ridge contour to see the effect on the lingual border molding of lower denture. As a result, the shape of the border was formulated a quite different contour from the open mouth impression technique. The obtained contour had to be reshaped considerably. It was found that functional harmony with the surrounding tissue was difficult to be maintained. However, the contour is surely stable and favorable form for the retention of the lower denture provided patient is possible to adapt.
