This analysis will provide the educational information to the dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by dental hygienists in Jeonbuk from December 17, 2012 to January 24, 2013. The questionnaire was distributed by ordinary mail or direct visit. Except incomplete answers, 350 data were collected and analyzed. The study instrument was adapted from the structured questionnaire by Hong and Yoo. The questionnaire consisted of education experience of health insurance management, subjective and objective knowledge, insurance screening review, and need for health insurance education. Data were analyzed by SPSS 12.0 program. Cronbach alpha in the objective knowledge on health insurance rate criteria was 0.836 and this was a reliable figure. Results: The subjective knowledge level of dental insurance was higher in the senior dental hygienists. Subgingival curettage was the lowest percentage of correct answers in the objective knowledge. In recent six months, higher review control rate was shown in the higher claim for health insurance and insurance screening review. Conclusions: The majority of the respondents had lower level of knowledge of health insurance claims. The continuous education of dental health insurance will be necessary in the dental hygienists.

  • Purpose: The characteristics of spatial allocation planning in dentistry through examining the dental hospitals in Korea and comparison between them are necessary for the development of planning of the dental healthcare system. This study has been started to provide basic informations such as zoning, allocation distribution, and space configuration for the planning of dental hospital architecture. Methods: Literature review of dental care departments and investigation on current status of dental hospital in Korea have been conducted. The spatial allocation and space configuration of eleven dental hospitals have been analyzed. Results: The result of this study can be summarized in three points. The first one is that dental hospitals in Korea are consisted with eight to eleven dental care departments and they are divided with the horizontal allocation type with three to four departments in a floor for the spatial communication or the vertical allocation type with a department in each floor for the independent space. The second one is that oral medicine and oral maxillofacial radiology are located near the main entrance, orthodontics and pedodontic dentistry in lower level, prosthodontics in upper level, and conservative dentistry and periodontics have no specific spatial consideration. The third one is that the factors to consider the allocation planning are zoning for examination & diagnosis, basic practice, adolescence, surgery, circulations for patient, dentist, staff, different access for department like as easy access for reception and pedodontic dentistry, enclosure space for prosthodontics and surgery, frequency of visit and treatment care time, and change of treatment concept from treatment department to disease control corporative practice. Implications: This study is the starting point for the research of spatial configuration in dentistry and it is necessary to analyze the architectural planning to develop the dental healthcare system.

  • Background: The objective of behavioral guidance is to establish effective communication that aligns with a child's requirements to manage disruptive behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Tell-Show-Do and Ask-Tell-Ask techniques in managing dental anxiety in children during their initial appointment. Methods: The study included 50 children (28 boys and 22 girls) without any prior experience between the ages of 7 and 11 at their first dental visit. The children were randomly categorized into two groups: Group 1, Tell Shows Do, and Group 2, Ask-Tell-Ask. Subsequently, all children underwent noninvasive treatment procedures such as restorations, sealants, and oral prophylaxis. Furthermore, behavioral management techniques were employed based on the allocated group. Finally, anxiety levels for all children were assessed using the Raghavendra, Madhuri, and Sujata Pictorial Scale (RMS-PS) and heart rate at three different intervals (before, during, and after). The obtained data were entered into Microsoft Excel, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. A paired t-test and Mann-Whitney U-test were used to compare the mean and median values of the two groups and determine their effectiveness. Results: Children in the TSD group exhibited statistically significant heart rates and RMS-PS scores in intra-group comparisons. However, children in the ask-tell-ask group showed a significant reduction only in the RMS-PS scores (P < 0.001) but not in the measures used to assess heart rate (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Tell-Show-Do was more effective than ask-tell-ask in alleviating dental anxiety in children. The simultaneous application of these two strategies can synergistically alleviate dental anxiety during a child's initial dentist appointment.

  • In patients with cerebral palsy, dental treatments, which require absolute patient's corporation, have many difficulties because of muscle spacity, involuntary muscle movements and spasm. Especially in endodontic treatments which very meticulous instrumentation is needed, these muscle discordances may lead to unexpected accidents such as tissue damage while filing, over-instrumentation and swallowing instruments. Also, taking radiographs for measuring canal length is often hindered by walking and movement disorders. This paper is to present a clinical case of one-visit root canal treatment using electrical apex locator under general anesthesia in a cerebral palsy patient.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the regional difference of chronic periodontal care services in Korea by the analysis of 2010 raw data from Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. Methods: The subjects were the chronic periodontitis patients over 35 years old from dental care facilities in Korea. The study population was 278,319 including 264,994 claims made by dental clinics, 8,084 by dental hospitals, 3,509 by general hospitals, and 1,732 by tertiary hospitals. Results: There was a significant difference in medical care cost benefit between the provinces(p<0.0001). The age groups showed a clear difference in the patient charge, cost of insurance, and medical care cost benefit(p<0.0001). In consideration of the first visit or revisit, there were differences in the rate of prescription, dental examination, and surgical procedures of the chronic periodontal patients from dental facilities. The radiographic use rate in the tertiary hospitals was 2.6 times higher than that of the dental clinic in the treatment of the new chronic periodontal patients. Conclusions: The use of dental services in the periodontitis is influenced by the types of medical services facility, cost of medical insurance, and patient charge. In consideration of cost benefit analysis, prevention is the most important care for the periodontitis. Regional difference in peridontitis is cause by the use of medical services and quality of treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to find general trends in dental fear among adolescences at 15-17 years of age, differences in levels of dental fear according to relevant variables, and the degrees to which those variables influence fear of dental treatment and their causal relationships. The researcher made use of a questionnaire including tools of questionnaire survey DFS, DBS and questions regarding characteristics of adolescences, and then analyzed covariate structure modeling by using LISREL 8.12 after conducting univariate analysis by employing SPSS. Cronbach's reliability coefficients showed higher in DFS(0.957), DBS(0.916), and GFS(0.910). The more recent experience in pain in the oral cavity and the stronger pain when treating dental disease and the more frequent experience in pain when treating dental disease and also the more broken dental appointments, the higher levels of dental fear showed with statistical significance. The linear structure equation model was statistically appropriate and well fit. By the model, severity and frequency of pain during treatment, experience of breaking dental visit appointment, distrust for dentists and general fear were directly influenced on dental fear.

  • Many disabled patients need extensive dental treatment because they have much difficulty in maintaining their oral hygiene. However, because they are not cooperative and not manageable, they require physical restraints, drug induced sedation or general anesthesia. General anesthesia is useful in control of the patients who cannot be treated in other ways. Additionally, general anesthesia provides more safe environment for medically compromised patients. The aim of the present study was to investigate a kind of disorder, sources of referral, preoperative oral condition, experience of dental visit, and performing general anesthesia or not of 930 disabled patients in Kyung-Hee University dental hospital for 30 years.
