It would provide fundamental data in the development of health promotion programs for manufacturing workers. Methods : Data on 3,171 employees who underwent health check-ups by the National Health Insurance Service in L company, G City from March to December 2014 were analyzed. The statistical analysis of frequency, chi-square test, and multiple logistic regressions were performed using SPSS 18 program. Results : The results of this study show that obesity and over-weight are the health behaviors that influence the prevalence of chronic diseases in manufacturing employees. Conclusions : The implementation of public health projects to improve the voluntary participation of the employees can enhance their health, improve the productivity, and influence their quality of life positively by changing the health behaviors.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine and explain the extent of income-related inequity in health care utilization and expenditures to compare the extent in 2005 and 2010 in Korea. Methods: We employed the concentration indices and the horizontal inequity index proposed by Wagstaff and van Doorslaer based on one- and two-part models. This study was conducted using data from the 2005 and 2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We examined health care utilization and expenditures for different types of health care providers, including health centers, physician clinics, hospitals, general hospitals, dental care, and licensed traditional medical practitioners. Results: The results show the equitable distribution of overall health care utilization with pro-poor tendencies and modest pro-rich inequity in the amount of medical expenditures in 2010. For the decomposition analysis, non-need variables such as income, education, private insurance, and occupational status have contributed considerably to pro-rich inequality in health care over the period between 2005 and 2010. Conclusions: We found that health care utilization in Korea in 2010 was fairly equitable, but the poor still have some barriers to accessing primary care and continuing to receive medical care.
This study found a relationship between the characteristics of the elderly with disabilities and extra health care monthly costs caused by disability and suggests methods for effectively managing health care spending of the elderly with disabilities. This study used data from the 2011 Survey on the Disabled conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. The results of the analysis indicate that the relations between the socio-demographic characteristics of the elderly with disabilities and extra health care monthly costs caused by disability of the elderly are influenced by factors such as gender, age, members of the household, average monthly income and type of health insurance. Elderly people with disabilities spend too much for their medical care. To solve this problem, the government needs to find a variety of policy approaches to improve administrative procedure, establish a medical delivery system and enhance health care services.

PURPOSE. This study aims to assess and predict lifespan of dental prostheses using newly developed Korean Association of Prosthodontics (KAP) criteria through a large-scale, multi-institutional survey. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Survey was conducted including 16 institutions. Cox proportional hazards model and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to find out relevant factors and predict life expectancy. RESULTS. 1,703 fixed and 815 removable prostheses data were collected and evaluated. Statistically significant factors in fixed prosthesis failure were plaque index and material type, with a median survival of 10 to 18 years and 14 to 20 years each. In removable prosthesis, factors were national health insurance coverage, antagonist type, and prosthesis type (complete or partial denture), with median survival of 10 to 13 years, 11 to 14 years, and 10 to 15 years each. For still-usable prostheses, PCA analysis predicted an additional 3 years in fixed and 4.8 years in removable prosthesis. CONCLUSION. Life expectancy of a prosthesis differed significantly by factors mostly controllable either by dentist or a patient. Overall life expectancy was shown to be longer than previous research.
Smoking has been identified not as a major risk factor for circulatory and respiratory diseases but also as causes of various oral diseases. A number of clinical studies and regional health surveys have found an association between smoking and poor oral health status and between smoking and prognosis of dental treatments. However, there is few studies about status of smoking cessation treatment and policies in dentistry in Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the smoking patterns of outpatients and outcomes of short-term smoking cessation treatment in dental hospitals in Korea and, subsequently, to seek further smoking cessation services in dentistry. This study was sponsored by Korean Dental Association (KDA) and department of culture and welfare. 825 dental patients were voluntarily participated in a 4-week smoking cessation program with nicotine patch and 297 participants of them completed on smoking-related questionnaires. All participants were recruited from outpatients of 11 dental university hospitals (primarily in the department of oral medicine, oral surgery and periodontology) in Korea during 3-month period from October 2009 to January 2010. The Questionnaires included demographics, duration of smoking, heavy smoking index (HSI), number of thinking of quit smoking, duration of stop smoking and reasons to smoking, awareness of smoking effects on oral health, and their success rate after 4 weeks of nicotine patch program was investigated. The statistical analysis was carried by SPSS version 18.0 program and Chi-square test. According to the results of this study, male in their 30s to 50s were the most prevalent of all the participants and duration of smoking increased with age. Attempt rate to quit smoking (Quit smoking) was the highest in 30s and 40s with duration of quit smoking ranging 1 to 3 months. Emotional stresswas the most frequently reported reason for smoking, followed by habit and pleasure in order. All age group showed high HIS over 71% and awareness of smoking effects on oral diseases such as oral soft tissue diseases, periodontal diseases and dental caries was found relatively high (50~60%) Periodontal implant was the main reason for participation in the smoking cessation services in dental clinics and the success rate of, 4-week nicotine patch program of all the participants was 29.4%, extremely low compared to that of medical clinics. Systemic education for dentists to be able to provide interventions to quit smoking including counseling with the 5As'and development of available measures for smokers is needed as considered that the low success rate of the smoking cessation services in dentistry could be explained mainly by lack of dentists' strategies, experience and attention. Awareness and attention of dentists should be emphasized and their participation be encouraged by long-term, multidisciplinary policies such as establishment of insurance fee, which would made a considerable progress in preventing smoking-related oral diseases and promoting public oral health.
While previous epidemiological studies on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) have been based on a given health center or population sample, no study has been performed on general population of Korea, especially concerning about treatment pattern such as clinician’s specialty involved in TMD treatment, types and amount of prescription medication and cost. This study aimed to investigate magnitude of health visits and treatment patterns for Korean patients with TMD through the computerized database of Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRAS). Inclusion criteria were all patients registered on the HIRAS database over 3 years' period from 2003 to 2005 and the medical records of patients with TMD as a main diagnosis were extracted. Information collected was as follows; distribution related to gender, age and region and type of hospital the patients visited, treatment duration, clinicians' specialty involved in treatment, cost, types of prescription medication and surgical treatment. The results of this study indicated that 0.15% of the population yearly sought TMD treatment, presenting with increase of incidence over the three years. Most of TMD patients were women (99.8%) and the biggest age group was second and third decades and decreased with age. Seoul and Kyeonggi province presented with higher incidence of TMD compared to the other regions of Korea, which seems to be related with magnitude of population. 56% of TMD patients visited primary care sector and the numbers of treatment visits was the highest in dental clinic (38.4%), followed by orthopedics (28%) and ENT (13.6%) clinics in order. Duration of prescription medication was the longest for anti-inflammatory analgesics, followed by antipsychotic drugs and muscle relaxants. Inpatient care related to TMD was primarily performed in dental hospital compared to medical hospital. Medical database of HIRAS provided comprehensive and vast information on epidemiologic characteristics and treatment patterns for patients seeking TMD treatment, which can be more reliable data to expect medical demand for TMD in condition that accurate diagnosis and standardized treatment is delivered in clinical settings.

The study aims to determine the status of oral health of mental illness patients and establish the preliminary data. The examinations and questionnaire survey were done 92 psychiatric patients to measure sociodemographic characteristics, decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index, patient hygiene performance (PHP) index, community periodontal index of treatment need (CPITN). Result of the missing teeth index in the state of oral health was higher in the hospital group (6.42) while the filled teeth index was higher in the center group (4.78). In the DMFT index, mental illness patients were higher than the national sample. The oral health status of medical aid recipients was poorer as the subjects were older and less educated (p<0.05). The PHP index was 3.41, close to the bad oral hygiene state. The hospital group (81.7%) required higher need for periodontal treatment. The periodontal health state was much poorer especially when the subject was in the age of 40's and 60's, received less education, and had no family (p<0.05). $CPITN_3$ was higher in the hospital group (13.3%) than the national sample (5.7%). The mental illness patients were socially vulnerable, therefore oral health care program should be needed and age, education level, health insurance type, presence of family and other factors needs to be considered in this approach.
This study tried to understand influence of water fluoridation program on oral health status and get the basic data of water fluoridation program in the future. Sangdang-gu in Cheongju City, fluoridated community and Manan-gu in Anyang City, non-fluoridated community were the surveyed area of the study. And from July 3, 2003 to July 22, 2003, using questionnaire, we surveyed opinions of parents of the fifth and sixth grade students of C elementary school in Sangdang-gu, Cheongju City and A elementary school in Manan-gu, Anyang City about water fluoridation program, and made an oral examination on the fifth and sixth grade students. The results are as follows : 1. DMFT index was lower for Cheongju, fluoridated community with Cheongju 1.69, Anyang 2.11(P = .010). 2. DMFT rate was lower for Cheongju, fluoridated community with Cheongju 6.72%, Anyang 7.94%. 3. Health level of the first molar was higher for Cheongju, fluoridated community with Cheongju 95.54%, Anyang 94.10%(P = .002). This study intends to understand the effects of fluoridation program on oral status by analyzing the effects of water fluoridation program and present basic materials for improving oral health. Improving national oral health is thought to be associated with expense retrenchment of oral health insurance financial. So it may need to extend using tap water to all the area of the country and additionally establish confidence through an active public relations and education of water fluoridation program.

To prepare a method for improving the oral health-related quality of life for Chinese foreign students by examining the oral health care behavior affecting the oral health-related quality of life, a self-administered survey was conducted with 236 Chinese foreign students at an university located in Jeonbuk during April 2 -May 5, 2013. The results showed that 65.3% had not visited the dentist within one year, 82.6% had not received scaling within one year, and 68.2% had not received oral health education. In regards to the OHIP-14 according to the general characteristics, there was a significant difference in the school year, health insurance enrollment status and overseas study life satisfaction (p<0.05). In regards to the OHIP-14 according to the oral health care behavior, there was a significant difference in the subjective oral health condition, the experience of having visited a dentist within one year and an experience of having received scaling (p<0.05). As for the influencing factors on the oral health-related quality of life, they were found to be the subjective oral health condition and the experience of having received scaling within one year (p<0.05). For the purpose of helping Chinese foreign students to conveniently use medical institutions when oral health-related problems arise, there is a need for a translated version of the guidebook in their native language, the availability of medical professional interpreters, the availability of a university level oral health service center, and practical oral health education to enhance oral health.
