Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the level of ethical dilemma and related factors in some clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 290 clinical dental hygienists in G metropolitan city from January 5 to February 27, 2015. The instruments used for this study were the modified ethical dilemma scale developed Lee, Kim and Park. The questionnaire consisted of dental hygienists & subjects(4 items), dental hygienists & professionals(12 items), dental hygienists & partners(7 items), and medical information(31 items). The questions were measured by Likert 5 points scale. The statistical analyses include descriptive statistics, t-test and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program. Results: Dental hygienists perceived ethical dilemma scored 3.35 and 3.24 except medical information. Professionals and partners in sub-domain of ethical dilemma by experience of ethics education and ethical conflict were high and showed statistically significant difference. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and subjects was job satisfaction. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and partners was adequacy of ethics education in college/university. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to develop the professional dental hygiene program for the prevention of ethical dilemma in dental hygienists and to make ethics education for ethical decision making.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between education experience, awareness and practice of infection control during the prosthodontic treatment in clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was answered by 255 clinical dental hygienists in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas from October 10 to December 30, 2016. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects (8 items), dental prosthesis infection education experience (5 items), dental prosthesis infection awareness (5 items) and dental prosthesis infection practice (14 items) based on Likert 5 point scale. For statistical analysis, SPSS Statistic 22.0 was used. Results: A significant association was shown among education experience, awareness and practice of infection control during the prosthodontic treatment of clinical dental hygienists (p<0.001). Dental hygienists count, dental prosthesis infection education experience and awareness had positive influences, but the age group from 26 to 30 had negative influence on dental prosthesis infection practice. Conclusions: The study confimed that the dental prosthesis infection education program and continued education is necessary for the safety and health of patients, and to prevent the cross-infections of the clinical dental hygienists.
Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate dental hygienists' knowledge of smoking, attitudes toward tobacco cessation, and tobacco cessation education activities, which will serve as fundamental data for developing an effective tobacco cessation education program for dental hygienists. Methods: From 2020-08-17 to 2020-09-05, 184 dental hygienists working at dental clinics and hospitals in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do were surveyed. We performed t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analyses. Results: Dental hygienists' smoking-related knowledge, expert attitudes toward tobacco cessation, and tobacco cessation education activities were all high in tobacco cessation education (p<0.05). According to the analysis of the dental hygienists' knowledge of smoking, attitude toward smoking, and correlation of tobacco cessation education activities, there was a significant amount of correlation (p<0.01). According to the analysis of factors affecting dental hygienists' tobacco cessation education activities, expert attitudes towards tobacco cessation (𝛽=0.434, p<0.001), tobacco cessation materials (𝛽=0.160, p=0.009), experience in tobacco cessation education while attending school (𝛽=0.152, p=0.010), and attitudes toward tobacco cessation (p<0.05) were statistically significant. Conclusions: The results of this study are utilized as fundamental data to develop an effective tobacco cessation education program, factoring in dental hygienists' attitudes toward tobacco cessation.
Background: This study was conducted to investigate the actual status of dental hygienists' CPR-related educational experiences and the actual status of dental hygienists' CPR license retention, and to investigate the differences and correlations among CPR-related knowledge, attitudes, and performance abilities. Methods: An online self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 200 dental hygienists nationwide from May 6 to 29, 2019. The data regarding the sociodemographic characteristics, CPR-related knowledge, attitudes, and performance abilities were collected and analyzed using the chi-square test, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and the Pearson correlation coefficient using IBM SPSS Statistics version 20.0. Results: Dental hygienists with CPR-related education experience showed high levels of knowledge in the area. Dental hygienists with CPR-related education experiences and dental hygienists with CPR licenses showed high CPR performance abilities. Positive correlations are observed among CPR-related knowledge, attitude, and performance abilities. Conclusion: As CPR-related education has been found to be of value and importance to dental hygienists, systematic educational programs as well as support for regular education will need to be implemented.

This study surveyed and analyzed attitudes toward people with disabilities, awareness of considerations in dental treatment for individuals with disabilities, the need for education on dental treatment for people with disabilities, and the educational requirements for dental hygienists working in dental medical institutions. The study was conducted to highlight the importance of dental treatment education for people with disabilities and to provide foundational data for future dental treatment education programs targeting dental hygienists. A total of 221 dental hygienists working in dental care institutions nationwide participated in a self-administered online questionnaire from November 2 to 15, 2022. This study concludes that there is a significant correlation between the attitudes of dental hygienists toward the disabled, their recognition of considerations in dental treatment for the disabled, the need for education on dental treatment for the disabled, and their educational experience in providing dental treatment for the disabled. In order to improve these factors, it is important to implement and expand systematic dental care education for people with disabilities in the school curriculum, as well as in supplementary education and seminars.
Objectives: In this study, dental hygienists' perceptions of dental hygienists' communication and general public's mutual perceptions were compared to seek development directions and plans for improving dental hygienists' communication skills, and furthermore, communication to increase satisfaction between the general public and dental hygienists. This study was conducted to provide basic data on the development and direction of competency improvement education. Methods: From April 1 to April 31, 2023, a survey was conducted through an online link for the general public with dental treatment experience and dental hygienists currently working at dentists in Gwangju and Jeonnam. A total of 258 questionnaires were collected. Independence t-test and paired t-test were performed using SPSS Statistics (ver. 21.0; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) Results: As a result of analyzing the accuracy of the communication ability of dental hygienists, from the dental hygienist's point of view, general publics perceived that the dental hygienist's underestimation of their own communication ability was actually lower than the dental hygienist's underestimated communication ability. From the general public's point of view, dental hygienists overestimated their communication ability. In fact, dental hygienists perceived their general publics as higher than general public's overestimated communication ability. Conclusions: Based on these results, it is necessary to develop education and operate various educational programs to improve the communication skills of dental hygienists, and to rethink educational accessibility to increase participation in education and to publicize the professionalism of dental hygienists.
Objectives: This study aimed to measure the knowledge of dental hygienists regarding dental waste, and identify the relationship between general characteristics and infection control characteristics. Methods: This study was conducted using a self-reported questionnaire in 250 dental hygienists. The questionnaire consisted of 21 items: storage container (5 items), storage locations (5 items), storage period (9 items), and storage method (3 items). The collected data were analyzed using the t-test and analysis of variance. Results: The education experience of infection management within the last year was reviewed for significant differences among dental hygienists regarding storage container and storage periods (p<0.05). Statistically significant differences were observed regarding the knowledge of storage container, storage locations, storage period, and storage method among the enrolled dental hygienists (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study examined the necessity of developing conservative education and job education programs to improve the knowledge level of dental hygienists regarding dental waste management.
This study was attempted in order to look into 'Assist work' as to Implant system which dental hygienists perform in a clinical field. Subjects of this research were 362 dental hygienists who work at general hospital, University hospital, dental hospital, and dental clinics located in Seoul, Kyeong-gi, In-chon, and Jeon-buk area. As to research tool, we produced questionnaire which was comprised of the total 25 items regarding 3 of general features (age, career of dental hygienist, and personality), 6 of implant system assist work, 3 of Informed consent before surgery, 6 of preoperative preparation and maintenance related business, and 7 items related to postoperative maintenance. By using SPSS program, collected data was analyzed. Results of analysis in this study were as follow; 1. As to implant related education, dental hygienists' experience of education was high as 77.7%, and the people who is needed more education was 86.3%. Consequently, dental hygienists' concern about the implant related education was very high. 2. It was observed that most of informed consent making approvement by announcement to the surgical operation was made by dental hygienist before implant as 95%. 3. Over 80% of dental hygienists performed acquisition of cleanliness technology, motivation, back up articles preparation, treatment area arrangement, and etc. which we can check by preoperative maintenance items. In particular, response about the motivation was very high as more than 90%. 4. When performing an operation, in the case of disinfecting finger was low for 53.9% and the method was mainly washing with drug solution, and gown sterilization was performed only in 52.2%. Therefore education regarding disinfection was urgently needed. 5. Significance of education could be known that answers of hygienists experienced education appeared highly in items of maintenance method and there was statistically significant difference(p<0.05). 6. In case that assist work were 21cases or greater, agitation measurement was the most many performed in 68.9% and difference was showed up significantly(p<0.001). 7. Evaluation about periodontal tissue was high in dental hygienists who had experienced education and also there was statistically significant difference. In conclusion, assist work of dental hygienists was very comprehensive when implant surgery was performed, and all of items excluding hand disinfection or gown disinfection were highly showed up in most of hygienists. However, since there is the limit that we didn't investigate the quality of performing contents. It is considered that further study regarding the content has to be progressed for supporting this result in the future.
Objectives : The education of dental hygienists on emergency care has been implemented as a part of curriculum at school, the contents and practice are inadequately and unsystematically conducted. The purpose of the study was to examine the perception and use of emergency care in dental hygienists in various emergency situations and emergency medical equipment. Methods : The subject of this study was 64 dental hygienists dental hygienists in Chungchenongnam-Do. The data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire from November, 17 to 24, 2011. Results : Only 3.1% of dental hygienists answered "I know very well", exhibiting relatively low level of recognition. Moreover, 15.6% of respondents answered "I know quite well", 53.2% answered "I know somewhat well", and 28.1% answered "I do not know well". In terms of the operation of defibrillator, 9.4% of dental hygienists answered "yes" and 90.6% answered "no". Regarding performing CPR, 15.6% of respondents answered "I can perform" while 84.4% answered "I can not perform". Conclusions : Despite the education on emergency medicine, dental hygienists working in dental clinics are found to be not well aware of proper perception of emergency care and the utilization of emergency medical equipment. Therefore, appropriate refresh educational framework and development and application of programs are thought to be essential for dental hygienists to adequately and swiftly respond to emergency situations by full recognition of the importance of emergency care.

Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the oral health knowledge and attitude toward the patients and to provide the right direction for oral health improvement in the dental hygienists. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the 297 adult patients who were taught by the oral health education by the dental hygienists in Seoul and Gyeonggi province from May-July 2013. Results : Among the patients, 34.7 percent replied that they had oral health education by the dental hygienists. The intention to revisit to dental clinic accounted for 60.6%. Those having the oral health education by the dental hygienists accounted for 67.7%. Conclusions : It is very important for the dental hygienists to educate the patients on the oral health knowledge that can influence the dental clinic revisit intention.
