Dentists' opinions on return to work of career interrupted dental hygienists (경력이 단절된 치과위생사의 직무 복귀에 대한 치과의사의 의견)

  • Objectives: This study aims to identify dentists' opinions about the return to work of the dental hygienists with career interrupted. Convenience sampling was made of 22 dentists with the clinical experience (about 0.25%) of the 4,944 members of Gyeonggi-do Dental Association. Data were collected through an electronic survey using e-mails and telephone interviews and analyzed using the constant comparison method. Methods: Open coding was assigned to the initial data from the survey in an explicit language, and focusing on the types of their employment, working conditions, etc. Summarization and conceptualization were made of the second data in an implicit language. Results: Most of the dentists were found to have positive attitudes toward the return to work of career interrupted dental hygienists and hope to adjust their wages based on their job performance or after their probational period expires. Most of the dentists were found to have positive attitudes towards the hygienists' flexible working although their concerns about work efficiency and hospital atmosphere. This study is a qualitative study that describes dentists' opinions and presents the need for the career interrupted dental hygienists to return to work. Conclusions: The study proposed that the educational institutions should take into account the hygienists' opinions when implementing the programs for promoting their return to work and their evaluative studies.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of coaching leadership on organizational effectiveness of dental hygienists. A survey was conducted on dental hygienists in Busan and Kyungnam from December 7, 2016 to January 15, 2017. A total of 215 questionnaires were included in analysis. The influence factors of coaching leadership on the rapport-building between the leaders and the members included the leader's direction (p<0.001) and relationship (p<0.001). The influence factors of coaching leadership on organizational commitment included the leader's relationship (p<0.001), direction (p<0.05), development (p<0.05), and accountability (p<0.05). The influence factors of coaching leadership on job satisfaction included the leader's relationship (p<0.001) and development (p<0.01). The coaching leadership of dental hygienists has been found to make a positive influence on the organizational effectiveness. It is believed that systematic and comprehensive coaching leadership training for dental hygienists must be conducted to build up trust between the leaders and the members, facilitate communication, and enhance job commitment and performance.   • The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of verbal violence against dental hygienists, their emotional reaction and the relation between their intention of job transfer and verbal violence so that it could offer the basic data for developing the way how to cope with verbal violence and for improving their performance. Two hundred fifty-seven dental hygienists working for dentists' in Busan were interviewed from May 17 to 31, 2014 to collect data, of which analysis was as follows: 1) As a result of verbal violence done by patients and their guardians, 80.5% said that they experienced crude language with 17.5% forceful and imperative sentence, and 13.2% ignorant statements about their job. They were exposed to verbal violence once or twice every 6 months. As a result of researching verbal violence of co-working senior or junior hygienists, 52.1% answered that their co-working senior or junior hygienists talked crude language and 38.1% said their co-workers happened to say crude language to them. The crude language experience was relatively high as 20.2% and once or twice a week. As a result of verbal violence done by dentists, 47.5% said that they've heard crude language and 34.6% said that they experienced forceful and imperative sentence. 2) The overall average of the intention to transfer their job was $3.06{\pm}1.03$, while the highest intention of job transfer was $3.11{\pm}0.91$ where they said I have once wanted to transfer my job. 3) As a result of seeing the relation among verbal violence, emotional reaction and the intention of job transfer, there was co-relation between verbal violence and the patients' age (p<0.01); there were also co-relation between verbal violence of patients, co-workers and dentists (p<0.01). There was also significant relation between emotional reaction on verbal violence and their intention of job transfer (p<0.001).

  • Objectives : In order to manage to reformative tendency of the educational whole with change request of dental hygienics education which is diversificated and professionalized the manufacturing practice of a temporary resin jacket which is educated with from much dental hygiene is become accomplished, so far also the recognition which relates with the manufacturing practice of a temporary resin jacket of dental hygiene students there is not researched. The present research carried out the practice evaluation with the target of students of a dental hygiene department, who finished a manufacturing practice of a temporary resin jacket, analyzed and investigated the material, reported its result, and enforced a research. Methods : This research selected students of 6 dental hygiene departments located in the Daegu Gyeongbuk region, who have manufacturing experience of a temporary resin jacket, by a convenient sampling method, and then a questionnaire was executed by a self-administration method, and a total of 290 copies were statistically treated. The content of the questionnaire are composed of 2 questions on an attitude survey before and after manufacturing practice of a temporary resin jacket, 3 questions on an educator for practice of a temporary resin jacket, 7 questions on recognition of technical skills for manufacturing a temporary resin jacket, 9 questions on the practice content evaluation of manufacturing of a temporary resin jacket and recognition on manufacturing practice of a the temporary resin jacket. Results : 1. The average of recognition on technical skills for manufacturing a temporary resin jacket of a dental hygienist was 3.82 points, the average of evaluation on practice content of manufacturing a temporary resin jacket being 3.75 points, and the average of recognition on the practice of manufacturing a temporary resin jacket was 3.71 points. 2. Currently, as the educator for the practice of manufacturing a temporary resin jacket, dental hygienists were 188 persons(64.8%) and dental technicians was 102 persons(35.2%), and as educators they want in the future, dental hygienists were 97 persons(33.3%) and dental technicians was 193 persons(66.7%). Persons hoping reeducation for manufacturing a temporary resin jacket were 219 persons(85.9%). 3. There was a significant difference in consciousness of students before and after practice of manufacturing a temporary resin jacket(p<.001). 4. There was a significant difference in practice evaluation and practice recognition according to the educational subject(p<.001). 5. There was a significant reverse correlation in the educational subject, practice evaluation and practice recognition(p<0.01). Conclusions : The practice for manufacturing a temporary resin jacket in education of dental hygiene is necessary to improve job performance ability in more various and specialized dental treatment and to solve desire for improvement of professional technical skill ability of students, and accordingly. About study process of the future students observation investigation or student objective interview investigation etc. seeks a problem in the become research lead, the succeeding research which gropes the plan which is the possibility of solving the problem which discovered is thought will be necessary.

The Effects of Hospital Employees's Work-Life Balance on Job Engagement and Job Performance - Focusing on Busan and Gyeongnam Province- (병원 종사자의 워라밸이 직무열의와 직무성과에 미치는 영향 - 부산·경남지역을 중심으로 -)

  • This study sought to understand the mediating effect of job enthusiasm in relation to work-life balance and job performance of hospital workers. The data collected through a self-contained survey using structured questionnaires for employees of medical institutions in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and Process Macro programs. As a result of the analysis, job performance and non-role performance were the most influenced by passion (+), and work-life balance was evaluated as a factor that increased job enthusiasm. In addition, work-life balance directly influenced job performance, but indirectly influenced job performance as a medium. In particular, the work-life balance and the relationship between performance other than roles were fully mediated. In order to improve the job performance of hospital workers at the organizational level, it is necessary to increase job enthusiasm, which means that efforts are needed to establish an organizational culture that values work-life balance.

Analysis of Tasks and Education Needs for Dental Hygienist for Development of Dental Hygiene Curriculum (치위생 교육과정 개발을 위한 치과위생사의 직무현황 및 교육요구도 분석)

  • In this study we analysed frequency and importance of tasks, and education needs of 114 people working in dental clinics to be a reference of dental hygiene curriculum development. The results are as follow: The order of performance frequency is management support, preventive dental treatment, dental treatment assistance and oral health education, and the order of importance level of tasks and education needs is management support, dental treatment assistance, preventive dental treatment and oral health education. There is no statistically significant difference of performance frequency by general characteristics. The tasks considered most important level depending on general characteristics are oral health education in age of 40s (p<0.05), dental treatment assistance in dental hygienists (p<0.05), management support in women (p<0.05), dental hygienists (p<0.05), and more experienced workers (p<0.05). The most need for Educations depending on general characteristics are oral health education in women (p<0.05), dental treatment assistance in women (p<0.001) and dental hygienists (p<0.001), and management support in Seoul region (p<0.05). The importance of tasks and education needs have correlations. The results showed management support and dental treatment assistance are considered important in dental clinics and most needed job competency for dental hygienists.

Evaluation of Project-Based Learning on Community Dental Hygiene Practice Education (지역사회치위생학 실습 교육에서의 프로젝트 기반 학습 효과 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate community dental hygiene practice education, by verifying its effect after applying project-based learning in improving the practical and social skills of learners. A 15-week project-based community dental hygiene practice course was held for 27 senior students, who took community dental hygiene practice course in the Department of Dental Hygiene, Gangneung-Wonju National University. Twenty-seven students were composed of 4 teams. Each team selected a target group for four workplaces for adult workers to apply the oral health promotion project. The project was then planned and conducted based on a survey on the health problems confronting each group, and an evaluation was carried out after 4 weeks. From the results obtained in comparing confidence in problem solving ability, project value, teamwork competency, and community dental hygienist competence before and after course, the improvement in project value and teamwork competence scores was not statistically significant, but all four areas showed positive results. After analyzing the project actuality, learning outcomes, and project satisfaction after course results, the actuality of the project was 19.30 points, the learning achievement was 45.19 points, and the satisfaction was 19.19 points, demonstrating that the aim of achieving actual performance competence and a learning performance exceeding expectations was accomplished. After conducting an interview survey with 8 students, it was found that they had learned social skills involving problem-solving abilities and confidence, and teamwork competence such as cooperation, role responsibility, creative thinking ability, and communication skills. Community dental hygienists should be able to acquire learner-level practical skills and social skills in the community dental hygiene and practical courses, according to their competencies and job needs. It is necessary to develop a project?based systematic learning module to enable the community dental hygiene practice to operate as a subject closely related to fields in other dental hygiene departments.

Analysis of oral radiography practice (구강방사선 실습내용에 관한 분석)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine students' difficulties in the process of oral radiography practice, to raise awareness of the importance and necessity of oral radiography and decipher, and to provide some information on effective ways of oral radiography practice. Methods : The subjects in this study were 285 dental hygiene students at K college, who included 153 sophomores and 132 graduates-to-be from June to November, 2010. Results : 1. The parts of the anatomy structure that they found it most difficult to decipher were maxillary molar(25.3%) and lower molar(22.1%). 2. They made during oral radiography was an improper film positioning(35.1%). 3. The part of bisecting technique was adjusting vertical and horizontal angles(53.0%). 4. The part of paralleling technique was positioning XCP in the oral cavity(44.2%). 5. The part of bite-wing technique was adjusting vertical and horizontal angles(38.2%). 6. The part of occlusion technique was positioning film and tube head(36.5%). 7. The part of panorama technique was finding out program setting(42.5%). Conclusions : The findings of the study indicated that in terms of anatomy structure decipher, it's especially difficult to decipher maxillary molar and lower molar, and that film positioning was difficult to do in the process of oral radiography. What difficulties they faced in applying each kind of oral radiography techniques and which part of the oral cavity they found it hard to radiograph were analyzed as well in this study. Given the findings of the study, more intensive practice is required to help students to acquire accurate oral radiography techniques to ensure their successful job performance in the future.

A Study on the Knowledge and Awareness of Dental Hygienists and Dental Hygiene Students about Hepatitis B (치과위생사와 치위생과 학생의 B형 간염에 대한 지식과 인식에 관한 조사연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to survey the knowledge and awareness of dental hygienists and dental hygiene students about hepatitis B in an attempt to lay the solid foundation for the prevention of hepatitis B and infection control, as dental hygienists were highly likely to be exposed to HBV during job performance. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. 32.5% of the dental hygienists and 15.6% of the dental hygiene students were aware of their own HBsAg and HBsAb states. The dental hygienists who were cognizant of the states statistically significantly outnumbered the dental hygiene students who were (p=.000). 2. As for vaccination against hepatitis B, 71.8% of the dental hygienists and 47.3 % of the dental hygiene students were inoculated against it. The dental hygienists who were vaccinated against it outnumbered the dental hygiene students who were, and the disparity between the two was statistically significant (p=.000). 3. In the event of those who were vaccinated against hepatitis B, the dental hygienists were better cognizant than the dental hygiene students of the right time for the vaccination, required vaccination frequency (three times) and confirmation of the formation of hepatitis B antibody (p=.000). 4. Regarding awareness of hepatitis B infection route, the dental hygienists knew significantly better than the dental hygiene students that hepatitis B might be infected via blood (p=.030), sexual relations (p=.000), contaminated needle sticks (p=.000), mothers with hepatitis B positive during delivery (p=.000), toothbrushes/razors (p=.000) and exchange of drinking cups (p=.000). 5. As to the relationship between health status and knowledge on hepatitis B infection route, the respondents who were in bad shape had the best knowledge about that, followed by those in an average state of health and healthy respondents. And the dental hygienists had a significantly better knowledge than the dental hygiene students (p=.001). 6. Just a small number of the dental hygienists and students knew about the hepatitis B-related past experiences of their families, and the gap between the two was insignificant.

Field Manager's Opinion of the Dental Hygiene Student's Competency: In-Depth Interview Study (치위생학과 학생에게 바라는 역량에 대한 특성화 선택과정 실습기관 실무자의 의견: 심층면접)

  • The aim of this study was to take the field manager's opinion about the dental hygiene student's competency. Study design was cross sectional contents analysis with the in-depth interviews. Twelve subjects were randomly selected in half an hour interview. They were signed there's own autograph on the informed consents. The contents of the qualitative interviews were divided into two parts: students' competency required for the field practice and the system of the field practice. The first part consisted of the attitude of the field's practice, how well has accomplished the job, and demanded requirements for the better performance. And the other part was made up of duration of practice, the number of students per institution and other opinion. The results showed that most of them have positive conception about student's competency. They mentioned that many students have 'enthusiastic behavior and attitude in task performance' and 'progressive attitude and mind in duty'. While 'lack of interest in practice and sociality', 'the arrogant demeanor in the fields', and 'passive behavior and attitude in the interpersonal relationship' should be avoided for excellent competency. It is required for dental hygiene students to write daily practice record and clarify their reasons to choose the institution for better performance. In addition, it should be considered to make concrete evaluation items and students and field managers should have mutual responsibility.
