Objectives: The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the students majoring in dental hygiene on their oral health beliefs and oral health behavior. Methods: The survey was conducted using selfadministered questionnaires targeting 619 female students majoring in dental hygiene at three Universities in k and J province. The stronger health oral belief means higher score in susceptibility, severity, benefit and salience, but the higher score in barrier means stronger recognition in obstacle. Results: There was significant correlation between susceptibility and experience of not-treated oral disease (OR [odds ratio] 2.40; 95% CI [confidence interval] 1.73-3.34)' and 'dental caries (OR 2.36; 95% CI 1.25-4.45)'. Benefit had significant correlation with 'visiting dental clinic (OR 1.58; 95% CI 1.14-2.19)'. Salience had significant correlation with 'experience of not-treated oral disease (OR 0.70; 95% CI 0.52-0.94)'. Barrier had significant correlation with 'visiting dental clinic (OR 0.73; 95% CI 0.56-0.95)' and 'removing oral plaque (OR 0.71; 95% CI 0.52-0.95)'. There was no significant correlation between oral health belief and 'using of oral hygiene device' or 'regular tooth brushing'. Conclusions: Diverse oral health behaviors were affected by susceptibility, benefit, salience and barrier in oral health belief. The programs for oral health education and preventing oral disease should be prepared to change oral health belief to promote the oral health systematically based on the results of this study.
Objectives : The degree of depression in dental hygienist was analyzed to reveal the various factors related to them. Methods : The self-administered questionnaires were filled out from 202 dental hygienist in Daejeon City. The survey items included subjects' socio-demographic and job-related characteristics, health-related behaviors, depression. Chi-Square analysis and Pearson's correlation coefficient was put into survey results, in which a degree of depression was dependent variable and others were independent variable. Results : 1. The distribution for depression degree has shown the rate as 80.2% in normal range group and 19.8% in depression group. 2. As for depression, long working hours(p=0.042), poor sense satisfaction in work(p=0.000), not fit to the job(p=0.003), low personal relation with peer works or supervisors(p=0.039), without alcohol drinking(p=0.048), poor subjective condition of health(p=0.000) than their respective counterparts. 3. Concerning correlation between depression and various factors, poor sense satisfaction in work(r=-0.332, p=0.000), not fit to the job(r=-0.353, p=0.000), low personal relation with peer works or supervisors(r=-0.215, p=0.002), without alcohol drinking(r=-0183, p=0.009), poor subjective condition of health(r=-0.333, p=0.000). Conclusions : These results showed that depression state could be influenced by various factors, which include socio-demographic, job-related characteristics and health-related behaviors. Therefore, in order to reduce depression state of dental hygienists, development and application of programs to manage and research for them are required to be revitalized as well as socio-demographic and job-related characteristics and health-related behaviors.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between socioeconomic status and periodontal disease. Methods: The data used for the analysis were obtained from the sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2015). A total of 5,632 adults, aged over 19 years, were included in the study. This study analyzed data relating to socioeconomic status and health behaviors. The socioeconomic status was defined as an exogenous factor. Periodontal disease was the endogenous variable. Health behavior was a mediating variable. The study hypotheses were tested using Structural Equation Modeling analysis with Mplus 7.0 software. Results: According to the model fit test, the associated root-mean-square error was 0.05 (90% CI: 0.046-0.059); comparative fit index was 0.93; Tucker-Lewis index was 0.88; and standardized root-mean-square residual was 0.03. We found that socioeconomic status had significant effects on health behaviors (${\beta}=0.304$, p<0.001) and periodontal disease (${\beta}=-0.289$, p=0.001). Moreover, health behaviors had significant effects on periodontal diseases (${\beta}=0.143$, p<0.001). The analysis of a possible relationship between socioeconomic status and periodontal disease using path analysis demonstrated health behaviors difficulties, along with direct and indirect effects, further increased the risk of periodontal disease. Conclusions: The findings suggest that future interventions for the prevention of periodontal disease should consider health behavior.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between consumption of sweet drinks and foods with accompanying oral hygiene health behaviors, and their condition of oral hygiene rural residents who are expected to have relatively poor oral hygiene compared to their urban counterparts. Methods: The 384 subjects, who are aged over 40 and have taken dental examination by dentists in health branches in 6 Myouns, Kongju city, Chungchongnamdo Province during the period between June 1st through 31st, 2004, were asked about dental health behaviors and subjective symptoms using questionnaires. Results and Conclusions: Based on dental health behavior according to sweet beverage and food, the dental health behavior was desirable in both sexes for 'almost daily drink' concerning sweet beverages and 'almost never eat' concerning sweet food, with no statistical significance. As for oral conditions, the groups who responded to 'almost daily drink/eat' for sweet beverages and food had the highest rate of non-treated teeth, lost teeth, DMFT and CPITN, with no statistical significance. Multiple logistic regression analysis with the consumption frequency of sweet foods as explanatory variables and 5 factors of oral conditions as dependent variables, revealed that there was no statistical significance in the oral conditions according to the consumption frequency of sweet drinks while, as for sweet drinks, there was a significant difference to the group who answered as 'occasional gum bleeding' in the case of 'almost daily eat.' responders(OR= 2.33, 95% CI=1.42-3.81, p<0.05).
Objectives : This study was to evaluate the association between perceived oral health and perceived oral symptoms among adults in Daegu. Methods : All 437 subjects aged 18 or more selected convenience sampling were surveyed cross-sectionally via the self-administrated questionnaire. The questionnaire was measured perceived oral symptoms and perceived oral health, and also obtained socio-demographic characteristics, oral health behaviors. To assess the crude associations, bivariate analysis were applied. For the adjusted association between perceived oral health and perceived oral symptoms, multivariate linear regression multiple regression analysis was conducted. Results : 33.2% of the adults rated their perceived oral health was good, and 30.9% as poor. Older age, low education, had peridontal disease was negatively perceived their oral health(p<0.05). As oral symptoms were more frequently perceived, the perceived oral health were negative. Among the factors of perceived oral symptoms, trouble biting/chewing, poor periodontal status, trouble of appearance of teeth were positively associated with the perceived oral health after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics, oral health behaviors in the regression model. Age, education, income, recent dental treatment, and all perceived oral symptoms showed the highest impact of association with perceived oral health in the baseline-category logit model. Conclusions : Perceived oral health are significantly associated with perceived oral symptoms among adults in Daegu. The findings of this study will be helpful to design plans of oral health promotion in welfare institutions to increase the oral health related quality of life among the adults.
Background: Parental attention is crucial for preventing childhood oral diseases. Mothers play a significant role in maintaining their families' oral health, and their educational level influences their children's oral health behaviors. This study investigates the impact of mothers' educational levels on adult oral health behaviors using data from a national survey. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional analysis of secondary data. The data used were obtained from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Descriptive statistics were calculated to identify participant characteristics. Next, t-tests and one-way analysis of variance were conducted to examine the effects of the explanatory variables on the distribution of the dependent variable. Finally, logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the influence of the explanatory variable on the dependent variable, using "no education" as the reference value, and calculate the odds ratios. Results: Children of mothers with a college education or higher had a 1.13 times higher likelihood of receiving oral examinations than those whose mothers had no education. Children whose mothers graduated from college or higher had a 2.23 times higher probability of receiving preventative dental treatment than those whose mothers had no education. Children whose mothers graduated from college or higher had a 1.92 times higher probability of receiving scaling than those whose mothers had no education. Children whose mothers graduated from high school had a 1.35 times higher probability of receiving scaling than those whose mothers had no education. Conclusion: Developing oral health programs is important for low-educated and low-income parents to change theirs and their children's oral health behaviors/attitudes. This will help reduce oral health disparities among adults raised by parents of higher and lower socioeconomic statuses. Therefore, a comprehensive approach is essential for adults to maintain good oral health, regardless of variations in their parental educational levels during childhood.

The purpose of this study was to identify chronic diseases and oral health care behaviors in 65-year-old individuals and to determine the factors that influence masticatory mobility. The raw data from the 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2020 were utilized to analyze factors associated with chewing discomfort in 1,278 elderly Koreans. Using IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0, we conducted complex sample cross-analysis to examine the difference in chewing discomfort based on general characteristics, chronic diseases, and oral health care behaviors. Additionally, we performed complex sample multiple logistic regression analysis to identify the factors associated with chewing discomfort. As a factor influencing chewing discomfort, unmet dental care was 3.33 times higher (p<0.001), and subjective oral health was 0.18 times more likely to be moderate (p<0.001) and 0.48 times more likely to be good (p<0.001) lower. In the case of arthritis, the level of chewing discomfort was high (OR=1.08, p=0.694), but there was no significant difference. As a result of the aforementioned factors, it is believed that there is a need for policies and systems to provide dental care to the elderly before their oral health deteriorates. Additionally, tailored oral health promotion programs should be implemented.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of socioeconomic factors and health behaviors on the prevalence of oral diseases(dental caries and periodontal disease) among Korean adults. Data from the 2005 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed for adults aged over 19 years (n=25,215). Oral disease was defined as disease diagnosed by a dentist for the previous 12 months. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to conduct statistical analysis. The population without dental caries and periodontal diseases were used as the reference category for all analysis. The overall prevalence of annual dentist-diagnosed dental caries and periodontal diseases were 23.5% and 10.6% respectively. The relative risk of developing dental caries for graduates of middle school and lower were 1.53 times (95% CI: 1.24-1.89) more likely to develop dental caries comparing to college graduates. Low income earners were 1.23 times(95% CI: 1.01-1.49) more likely to develop dental caries than high income earners. Persons covered by national medical insurance were 1.45 times(95% CI: 1.08-1.95) more likely to develop dental caries comparing to persons covered by employee medical insurance. Compared with persons not eating snacks, the risk of developing caries in persons eating snacks once a day was 1.16(95% CI: 1.01-1.32), while those who snacked twice or more a day were 1.19(95% CI: 1.01-1.41). The relative risk of developing periodontal disease was 3.71(95% CI: 2.38-5.80) higher in older individuals than younger. In terms of education level, middle school graduates and lower were 1.54 times more likely to develop periodontal disease than college graduates. Low income earners were 1.47 times more likely to develop periodontal diseases than high income earners. Using data from a large, nationally representative sample of Korean populations, we support the hypothesis that the prevalence of oral diseases is related with socioeconomic factors and health behaviors. More intensive intervention efforts to reduce the prevalence of dental diseases are warranted in Korea.
This study was undertaken to verify various relations between dental health belief and related behaviors in mothers and children. Data for this study were obtained by 264 pairs of 1st and 3rd grade elementary school children and their mothers by self developed questionnaire, The questionnaires are made on the general socio-economical characteristics, the oral health knowledge and the behaviors relative to the oral health and oral health education as to how mothers implement the oral health related activities for their children, while for the children, the questionnaires have been measured relative to the oral health beliefs and health behaviors for the children. The obtained results have shown that mothers become with more ages, the usefulness to prevent children's oral diseases becomes lower, and as much as mothers have higher education level, the sensitivity relative to the oral diseases has been measured low. To the degree that the students live well in economical respect, it has been found that they placed more importance on the oral health. As much as the number of mothers tooth brushing becomes made more in a day, the tooth brushing of the children becomes more that much, and also has higher level of oral health beliefs. The number of children to see dentists has been found high, and to the extent of increasing frequency of visiting dental clinics. As the number of mothers tooth brushing education becomes made more frequent for the children. Also, as mothers put more restriction on the sugar intakes by the children, they placed higher importance on the oral health for their children. In conclusion oral health behavior in mothers' influence on dental health belief of their children, it has been reviewed necessary to activate more the mother-children joint oral health education and oral health projects that mothers and children take part together, as well as to study more in accurate and systematic approaches through more comprehensive and various subjects and elements further in the future.
