PURPOSE. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of digitizing dental impressions of abutment teeth using a white light scanner and to compare the findings among teeth types. MATERIALS AND METHODS. To assess precision, impressions of the canine, premolar, and molar prepared to receive all-ceramic crowns were repeatedly scanned to obtain five sets of 3-D data (STL files). Point clouds were compared and error sizes were measured (n=10 per type). Next, to evaluate trueness, impressions of teeth were rotated by $10^{\circ}-20^{\circ}$ and scanned. The obtained data were compared with the first set of data for precision assessment, and the error sizes were measured (n=5 per type). The Kruskal-Wallis test was performed to evaluate precision and trueness among three teeth types, and post-hoc comparisons were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. Precision discrepancies for the canine, premolar, and molar were $3.7{\mu}m$, $3.2{\mu}m$, and $7.3{\mu}m$, respectively, indicating the poorest precision for the molar (P<.001). Trueness discrepancies for teeth types were $6.2{\mu}m$, $11.2{\mu}m$, and $21.8{\mu}m$, respectively, indicating the poorest trueness for the molar (P=.007). CONCLUSION. In respect to accuracy the molar showed the largest discrepancies compared with the canine and premolar. Digitizing of dental impressions of abutment teeth using a white light scanner was assessed to be a highly accurate method and provided discrepancy values in a clinically acceptable range. Further study is needed to improve digitizing performance of white light scanning in axial wall.
Purpose: It has been proposed that using new prediction methods, such as neural networks based on dental data, could improve age estimation. This study aimed to assess the possibility of exploiting neural networks for estimating age by means of the pulp-to-tooth ratio in canines as a non-destructive, non-expensive, and accurate method. In addition, the predictive performance of neural networks was compared with that of a linear regression model. Materials and Methods: Three hundred subjects whose age ranged from 14 to 60 years and were well distributed among various age groups were included in the study. Two statistical software programs, SPSS 21 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) and R, were used for statistical analyses. Results: The results indicated that the neural network model generally performed better than the regression model for estimation of age with pulp-to-tooth ratio data. The prediction errors of the developed neural network model were acceptable, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 4.40 years and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 4.12 years for the unseen dataset. The prediction errors of the regression model were higher than those of the neural network, with an RMSE of 10.26 years and a MAE of 8.17 years for the test dataset. Conclusion: The neural network method showed relatively acceptable performance, with an MAE of 4.12 years. The application of neural networks creates new opportunities to obtain more accurate estimations of age in forensic research.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the repeated measurement stability of scans related to dentition type. Methods: A normal model and the crowding and diastema models are also duplicated using duplicating silicon. After that, a plaster model is made using a plaster-type plaster on the duplicate mold, and each model is scanned 5 times by using an extraoral scanner. The gingival part and molar part were deleted from the 3D STL file data obtained through scanning. Using the 3D stl file obtained in this way, data is nested between model groups. Thereafter, RMS values obtained were compared and evaluated. The normality test of the data was performed for the statistical application of repeated measurements with dentition type, and the normality was satisfied. Therefore, the one-way ANOVA test, which is a parametric statistical method, was applied, and post-tests were processed by the Scheffe method. Results: The average size of each RMS in the Normal, Diastema, and Crowding groups was Normal> Crowding> Diastema. However, the standard deviation was in the order of Crowding> Normal> Diastema. The average value of each data is as follows. Diastema model was the smallest ($5.51{\pm}0.55{\mu}m$), followed by the crowding model ($12.30{\pm}2.50{\mu}m$). The normal model showed the maximum error ($13.23{\pm}1.06{\mu}m$). Conclusion: There was a statistically significant difference in the repeatability of the scanning measurements according to the dentition type. Therefore, you should be more careful when scanning the normal intense or crowded dentition than scanning the interdental lining. However, this error value was within the range of applicable errors for all clinical cases.
Purpose : This study was to evaluate the influence of slice thickness of computed tomography (CT) and rapid protyping (RP) type on the accuracy of 3-dimensional medical model. Materials and Methods: Transaxial CT data of human dry skull were taken from multi-detector spiral CT. Slice thickness were 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm respectively. Three-dimensional image model reconstruction using 3-D visualization medical software (V-works /sup TM/ 3.0) and RP model fabrications were followed. 2-RP models were 3D printing (Z402, Z Corp., Burlington, USA) and Stereolithographic Apparatus model. Linear measurements of anatomical landmarks on dry skull, 3-D image model, and 2-RP models were done and compared according to slice thickness and RP model type. Results: There were relative error percentage in absolute value of 0.97, 1.98,3.83 between linear measurements of dry skull and image models of 1, 2, 3 mm slice thickness respectively. There was relative error percentage in absolute value of 0.79 between linear measurements of dry skull and SLA model. There was relative error difference in absolute value of 2.52 between linear measurements of dry skull and 3D printing model. Conclusion: These results indicated that 3-dimensional image model of thin slice thickness and stereolithographic RP model showed relative high accuracy.
Purpose : The study was to promote patient safety by analyzing the effect of dental hygienist's perception of patient safety culture on infection control activities. Methods : The study is based on a survey of 210 dental hygienists in total working in dental settings. To find out infection control activities according to patient safety culture awareness, there were 6 general characteristics, 3 teamwork within the department, 2 infection control systems, 4 surface management, 9 equipment washing, disinfection, and laundry management, 4 infectious wastes, and 3 personal protection phrases. The data was analyzed using the SPSS version 20.0, and p<.05 was adopted to decide on significance. Results : The longer dental hygienists have worked n the dental settings, the more active they become in infection control activities. Among the different types of dental care settings, general (university) hospitals had the largest number of infection control activities, followed by dental clinics, and network dental clinics, in descending order. The dental settings possessing a higher number of dental hygienists were found to conduct more infection control activities than other dental settings. In addition, it was found that when a dental setting adopts a patient safety policy across all the units in the hospital, more systems and procedures for patient safety tend to be established, and that stricter management response to error leads to improvement of infection control activities. Conclusion :In order to enhance infection control activities, infection control activity programs should develop and implement periodic reinforcement of infection control education. regular monitoring of infection control activities.
Objectives: This study aimed to provide useful basic data for improving the quality of problem-based learning (PBL) to improve integrated thinking and problem-solving skills in clinical dental hygiene through in-depth exploration of the experiences of dental hygiene students trained in PBL modules. Methods: A total of nine participants were selected based on the grade distribution of clinical dental hygiene. Three participants each were from the upper, middle, and lower groups. A focus group interview (FGI) was conducted using a developed questionnaire. All contents of the recorded FGI were used to draw the main results while maintaining the core contents Results: The themes derived through the FGI were confirmed by 'advantages of PBL', 'competencies developed through PBL', 'teamwork experienced in PBL', 'required competencies for PBL team activities', 'differences in contribution among team members', 'satisfaction with PBL', 'improvements to PBL', and 'trial and error experienced in PBL'. Conclusions: The PBL was a useful for improving the integrated thinking and problem-solving skills of dental hygiene students. Moreover, this study provides useful basic data for the qualitative improvement of the PBL.
Local anesthesia is routine procedure in dental practices and has several complication. One of them, needle fracture is not uncommon in past, but rare in recent. The number of cases reported in the literature of broken needle in local anesthetic procedure has shown a marked decrease since the use of disposable spiral-constructed dental needle began. This complication results from lack of patient cooperation, inaccurate anesthetic technique, sudden movement of patient, error in the manufacturing procedure, use of short needle, and bending before use. Most common site is pterygomandibular space during inf. alveolar nerve block. In two patients, we removed broken needles under general anesthesia without complication. So we report cases with review of literatures.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the measurement error between conventional films, digital cephalographs and hardcopy. The material consisted of 29 cephalographs which used image modality of Asahi CX-90SP in the Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital. One observer measured fiducial measurements at an interval of four weeks. Measurement error was tested by Dahlberg's formula. A paired t-test was used to detect it between each modality. The results are as follows; 1. The monitor-displayed digital image showed enlargement compared with the conventional image. The cephalometric measurements of the monitor-displayed digital image and conventional image were no statistically significant difference except SNB. 2. In conventional image, measurement errors of linear and angular measurements were 0.23mm, $0.36^{\circ}$, respective. In monitor-displayed digital image, measurement errors of linear and angular measurements were 0.63mm, $0.48^{\circ}$ respective. 3. The reduction ratio of hardcopy was 1.01% compared to the monitor-displayed digital image. Based on the results, it indicates that the digital cephalographs and hardcopy using storage phosphor digital radiography showed the same accuracy as the conventional films in clinical use.
PURPOSE. This in vitro study investigates the effect of different post-rinsing times and methods on the trueness and precision of denture base resin manufactured through stereolithography. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety clear photopolymer resin specimens were fabricated and divided into nine groups (n = 10) based on rinsing times and methods. All specimens were rinsed with 99% isopropanol alcohol for 5, 10, and 15 min using three methods-automated, ultrasonic cleaning, and hand washing. The specimens were polymerized for 30 min at 40℃. For trueness, the scanned intaglio surface of each SLA denture base was superimposed on the original standard tessellation language (STL) file using best-fit alignment (n = 10). For precision, the scanned intaglio surface of the STL file in each specimen group was superimposed across each specimen (n = 45). The root mean square error (RMSE) was measured, and the data were analyzed statistically through one-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α < .05). RESULTS. The 10-min automated group exhibited the lowest RMSE. For trueness, this was significantly different from specimens in the 5-min hand-washed group (P < .05). For precision, this was significantly different from those of other groups (P < .05), except for the 15-min automated and 15-min ultrasonic groups. The color map results indicated that the 10-min automated method exhibited the most uniform distribution of the intaglio surface adaptation. CONCLUSION. The optimal postprocessing rinsing times and methods for achieving clear photopolymer resin were found to be the automated method with rinsing times of 10 and 15 min, and the ultrasonic method with a rinsing time of 15 min.
The importance of effective communication is increasingly stressed in the medical sector. This is crucial for the resolution of medical accidents and conflicts, and that can contribute to the prevention of the two as well. The careful attitude of the medical team toward patient safety and their communication with colleagues and other departments are mandatory for the successful decrease of dental accidents. The good communication within of the hospital organization is one of vital ways to ensure accurate diagnosis and successful treatment. In the field of health care, effective teamwork requires a shared goal, superb work skills, communication and cooperation, but this fact has been overlooked so far. Among those factors, communication is indispensable to the achievement of organizational goals, and how to boost communication by acquiring diverse skills and using appropriate tools in the dentistry should discreetly be considered. This study explared how to improve the teamwork and communication of organization in an effort to seek specific ways of reducing medical conflict in dental.
