PURPOSE. This study aimed to assess the effect of non-thermal plasma on the shear bond strength of resin cements to polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) in comparison to other surface treatment methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Eighty PEKK discs were subjected to different surface treatments: (1) Untreated (UT); (2) Non-thermal plasma (NTP); (3) Sandblasting with $50{\mu}m$$Al_2O_3$ particles (SB); and (4) Sandblasting + Non-thermal plasma (SB+NTP). After each surface treatment, the contact angle was measured. Surface conditioning with Visio.Link was applied in all groups after pre-treatment. RelyX Unicem resin cement was bonded onto the PEKK specimens. After fabrication of the specimens, half of each group (n=10) was initially tested, while the other half was subjected to thermocycling ($5^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$ at 10,000 cycles). Shear bond strength (SBS) testing was performed using a universal testing machine, and failure modes were assessed using stereomicroscopy. The SBS results were analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test. Independent t-test was used to examine the effect of thermocycling (P<.05). RESULTS. The highest SBS values with or without thermocycling were observed with PEKK specimens that were treated with SB+NTP followed by the SB group. The lowest SBS results were observed in the UT groups. CONCLUSION. The shear bond strength between PEKK and resin cements was improved using non-thermal plasma treatment in combination with sandblasting.
The demand for tooth-colored restorations has grown considerably during the last decade. Posterior composite restorations have risen in popularity as a result of the development of improved resin composites, bonding systems and operating techniques. A major limitation of direct composite restoration is the difficulty of controlling the polymerization shrinkage. To overcome this limitation, the indirect fabrication of a composite restoration and cementation with resin cement has been advocated. Unfortunately, the current available resin cements with indirect restorations do not always bond to dentin as strongly as dentin adhesive systems bond with direct resin composite restorations. Several procedural strategies have been proposed for indirect composite restoration. In this regard, the rationale for the indication, characteristics and clinical application is described in this paper. As a result, we will try to suggest the evidence-based guidelines for indirect composite restorations by reviewing each available indirect composite products, technical procedure and pronosis.
Introduction: MTA has been studied for more than 15 years since it was introduced and developed at Loma Linda University. The purpose of this review was to present the current published papers regarding MTA's biologic properties and to provide a deep insight into the material's mechanisms of actions. Results: MTA has appeared to be biocompatible in many previous researches. In addition to that, it had a potential to increase cell reactions such as proliferation and differentiation, Recently, MTA like new endodontic materials has been introduced and marketed. Conclusions: On the basis of current evidences, MT A seems to be biocompatible. Meticulous studies need to be performed to adopt new endodontic materials into clinical applications,
This paper reviewed the following subheadings and a few selected references in each section were discussed: ${\cdot}$ Sealant placed over caries; is it possible? Initial caries which is not sticky during proving is possible to be placed with sealants. ${\cdot}$ Prophylaxis of fissure; which method is most effective? Mechanical preparation with fissurotomy or resin polishing bur is one of the most effective method to clean the pit and fissure. ${\cdot}$ Glassionomer cement as a sealant; GIC, wheather it released fluoride or not, cannot be as cost-effective as resin-based sealants. ${\cdot}$ Sealant products; Color(white vs opaque), fluoride(containing vs not), filler component(filled vs non-filled) do not influenced the quality and retention of sealants. ${\cdot}$ Use of intermediate bonding agent to improve retention; Intermediate bonding may increase the retention rate of sealants ${\cdot}$ Penetration method of sealants; Several methods including waiting before light curing are recommended.
This is to determine the possibility of penetration of evaporated mercury to periodontal tissue after amalgam filling. Class 5 cavities on upper canine, total 40 teeth from 10 dogs, were prepared and amalgam alloy which contain about 10 Ci of radioactive mercury were inserted. The animals were sacrificed after the experiment. The teeth were routinely decalcified, sectioned, autoradiographed by means of emulsion and stained by H & E.
1. Blackened grains were found along collagen fiber space underneath gingival sulcus floor.
2. Mercury particle deposited more at cervical portion of periodontium than apical portion.
3. Blackened grains were found along the Sharpey's fiber. Crest bone side was more evident than cement side.
4. Mercury penetration to periodontium of non-experimented tooth showed almost same findings as experimented one.
An ideal post material should have physical properties similar to those of dentin. Post materials with high elastic moduli may cause root fractures. This clinical report describes the treatment of a severely damaged tooth using a recently introduced material. Polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) is a semicrystalline high-performance thermoplastic polymer. PEKK is a promising material for custom post-and-core fabrication because of its elasticity close to that of dentin, good shock absorbance, machinability, and low cost. A laboratory scanner was used to digitize the conventional impression of a severely damaged maxillary right first molar. A custom PEKK post-and-core was designed and milled using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technology. Using the proposed technique, a custom PEKK post-and-core was fabricated accurately and human error was reduced. Restoration was luted with resin cement. Custom PEKK post-and-core restorations are a viable alternative for treating severely damaged teeth.
