Methods : A survey was conducted of 471 dental hygienists in general hospitals, dental clinics and dental hospitals in City of Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do from December 20, 2009 to February 21, 2010. Results : 1. Among those who worked for more than 11 years, personal protection (3.79) and hand-washing frequency (3.90) factors were rated high (p<0.05). 2. When surveyed by workplace, personal protection was high in general hospitals (3.75) while hand-washing frequency was high in dental clinics (3.74). 3. Among those who received infection control education more than three times, personal protection (4.07) and hand-washing frequency (3.80) were high (p<0.05). 4. Personal protection-related factors were general hospital workers, necessity of infection control education and awareness on infectious disease (p<0.05), while factors associated with hand-washing frequency were number of patients per day, whether or not infection control-related class is given at school, necessity of infection control education and awareness on infectious disease (p<0.05). Background: In modern society, rapid changes in the medical environment have required medical staff to access various information and be competent in active and effective problem-solving through collegial interactions. In line with these changes, universities are aiming to connect education. This study aimed to provide basic data of connected-convergence education by survey the awareness and needs of college students in health-related fields. Methods: This study included 122 college students from the health field. A survey regarding "the awareness and need of connected-convergence education" was conducted and general characteristics of the participants were collected from June to July 2022. Results: The awareness of connected-convergence education was low at 19.7%, but the intention to participate was high at 74.6%. Subject requirements were 18.0% for medical psychology, 13.5% for communication and counseling, 13.5% for medical artificial intelligence technology convergence, and 10.4% for sports health management. In the group showing high satisfaction with the major curriculum, the demand for connected education was also high. For efficient operation, it was investigated that it was necessary to secure specialized training courses, recognition of liberal arts credits, the right to register for courses equal to those of major students, and secure dedicated classrooms. Conclusion: Although the awareness and experience of connected-convergence education among the participants were low, the intention to participate was high. As such a plan to revitalize the university curriculum was required. It is timely to discuss the nurturing of convergence-type talents and multidisciplinary thinking skills. It is meaningful to provide basic data necessary for connected-convergence education in health-related fields at university. Universities should strive to enhance job competency in the health field by providing connected-convergence education based on student demands.
Objectives : To provide basic data for preparing effective CPR guidelines and educational programs for dental hygiene students. Methods : Second-year dental hygiene students in the classes of 5 colleges in Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do from May, 2010 to September, 2010 were enrolled in this study. The subjects comprised of 113 students who had not received CPR education and 134 students who had. Results : 1. The subjective understanding of CPR increased significantly from 52.2% before the education program to 81.4% after the course. 2. The mean level of knowledge of CPR increased significantly from 3.57 before the education program to 6.10 after the course. 3. The attitude to CPR increased significantly from 64.6% before the education program to 86.6% after the program. 4. The appropriate CPR education timing determined by the subjects was high school(36.3%) and college(27.4%) before the education program but elementary school(38.1%) and high school(26.9%) after the course. Conclusions : Continuous CPR education and the development of a CPR educational program in the curriculum of a dental hygiene department are needed. This will help dental hygiene students perform correct CPR when they encounter cardiac arrest patients.
Objectives: This literature review seeks to identify the current status of the liberal arts education of dental hygiene majors offered by universities in Korea and the U.S. and provide a comparative analysis of the data on liberal arts education in both countries. Methods: From April 3, 2017 to May 1, 2017, research data on curriculum topics were collected from 60 selected universities. The data were collected from university websites, which also provided the universities' emails and dental hygiene major descriptions. We calculated the descriptive statistics of the variables and performed independent t-tests on the data. Results: In all the domains of the NCS and K-CESA, the dental hygiene major currently offers courses on language and communication and general education, focusing on self-management and development. Few universities offer subjects from other disciplines. Conclusions: Pro-actively exploring strategies is a prerequisite to the systematic operation of standardized dental hygiene education. It is imperative to conduct research consistently on relevant topics, such as teaching methods, general education standards, and connectivity between major subjects and the goals and effects of exposure to a general education.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the duties of dental coordinators using the DACUM technique and to develop a practical training course for dental coordinators based on the results. Methods: The curricula for clinic coordinators across 20 educational institutions were analyzed. A board of DACUM specialists was assembled to analyze the role of dental coordinators and to develop a practical curriculum. Results: First, after analysis, we selected 8 duties and 34 tasks that should comprise the role of a dental coordinator, and the number of major tasks was 21. Second, the educational program for dental coordinators developed in this study consisted of a total of 60 hours, including 42 hours of lecture and 18 hours of practice. A pre-requisite curriculum and a final curriculum were developed, and the detailed educational contents and supplies were outlined for each subject. Third, after comparing it with the existing clinic coordinator curricula from 20 educational institutions, the curriculum based on DACUM contained 11 additional fields. Conclusions: This study developed a more specialized, detailed, and practical dental coordinator curriculum based on DACUM. It is expected that more dental coordinators could be trained more professionally with this curriculum, and it could lead to further improvement of the curriculum.

The number of dental hygiene students is increasing as dental hygiene departments are extended or newly installed continuously, and in other to keep up with the quantitative increase, we need to standardize dental hygiene curriculums. The present study conducted a questionnaire survey with dental hygiene students who had completed clinical practice. The obtained results as follows. 1. According to the contents of clinical practice at dental clinics, the frequency of dental hygiene students' observation practice was high in basic medical service, dental prosthesis, and orthodontics. 2. The frequency of performance practice was high in basic medical service, oral medicine, preventive dentistry, pediatric dentistry, periodontology, and oral surgery. According to the area of clinical practice. 3. According to the contents of clinical practice at university hospitals, the frequency of dental hygiene students' observation practice was high in basic medical service, dental prosthesis, and orthodontics. 4. The frequency of performance practice was high in basic medical service, oral medicine, preventive dentistry, pediatric dentistry, periodontology, and dental prosthesis. 5. The students' satisfaction was high in basic medical service, oral medicine, preventive dentistry, and periodontology. The period of clinical practice varies according to school curriculum and circumstance among dental clinics and university hospitals where clinical practices are performed, students' satisfaction with their observation practice and performance practice may be different. Thus, for dental hygiene students' clinical practice, it is considered desirable to prepare integrated education programs that standardize the period and contents of clinical practice.
