  • Several methods are proposed for optimizing Fourier series estimators with respect to Mean Integrated Square Error metrics. Traditionally, such method have followed. one of two basic strategies; A stopping rules or the rules of determine multipliers. A central hypothesis of this study is that better estimates can be obtained by combining the two strategies. A new multiplier sequence is proposed, which used in conjunction with any of the stopping rules, is shown to improve the performance of estimator which relies solely on a stopping rule.

  • A two-compartment four-cell model is developed for the adiabatic autoclave slim type reactor for free radical polymerization of low density polyethylene(LDPE). The mass and energy balances give rise to a set of ordinary differential equations, and by analyzing the system it is possible to predict properly not only the reactor performance but also the properties of polymer product. The steady state multiplicity is found to exist and examined by constructing the bifurcation diagram. The effects of various operation parameters on the reactor performance and polymer properties are investigated systematically to show that the temperature distribution plays the central role for the properties of polymer product. Therefore, it is essential to establish a good control strategy for the temperature in each compartment. In this study it is shown that the reactor system can be adoptively controlled by pole-placement algorithm with conventional PID controller. To accomplish a satisfactory control, the estimator and controller are initialized during the period of start-up.

  • This study was conducted to find the relationship between the moisture content and basic density of green lumber and the final moisture content of kiln dried lumber. The possibility of using a ultrasonic nondestructive testing technology was investigated. Four matched 2-foot long boards were kiln-dried for 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours. Twenty three slices were cut to examine the distribution of moisture content along the length. It was revealed that the green weight was a better estimator of the final moisture content of the kiln-dried board than the green moisture content. The standard deviations of the moisture contents of the slices were not correlated with the final moisture contents of the kiln-dried boards. The two ultrasonic devices used for this study were apparently good tools for NDT.

  • This paper reports a simple posteriori error estimate method for adaptive finite element mesh generation using quadratic shape function especially for the magnetic field problems. The elements of quadratic shape function have more precise solution than those of linear shape function. Therefore, the difference of two solutions gives error quantity. The method uses the magnetic flux density error as a basis for refinement. This estimator is tested on two dimensional problem which has singular points. The estimated error is always under estimated but in same order as exact error, and this method is much simpler and more convenient than other methods. The result shows that the adaptive mesh gives even better rate of convergence in global error than the uniform mesh.

  • This paper reports a new and simple posteriori error estimate method for adaptive finite element mesh genration especially for the magnetic field problems. To estimate local errors, we consider the interelement boundary conditions. Elements which violate much the conditions are considered to have great errors. Magnetic flux density errors are considered as a basis for refinement. This estimator is tested on two dimensional proplems with singular points. The estimated errors are always under estimated but in same order as exact errors, and this algorithm is much simpler and more convenient than other methods. The adaptive mesh gives much better rate of convergence in global errors than the uniform mesh.

  • In this paper, we analyze the polio incidence data based on the Poisson autoregressive models, focusing particularly on change-point detection. Since the data include some strongly deviating observations, we employ the robust cumulative sum (CUSUM) test proposed by Kang and Song (2015) to perform the test for parameter change. Contrary to the result of Kang and Lee (2014), our data analysis indicates that there is no significant change in the case of the CUSUM test with strong robustness and the same result is obtained after ridding the polio data of outliers. We additionally consider the comparison of the forecasting performance. All the results demonstrate that the robust CUSUM test performs adequately in the presence of seemingly outliers.

  • We define a crossing point $x_0$ such that f(x)$\geq$g(x) for x$\leq$$x_0$ and f(x)$\leq$g(x) for x>$x_0$ where f and g are probability density functions. We may encounter suchy situation when we compare two histograms from two independent observations. For example two contingency tables where initially admitted students and actually enrolled students are classified according to their high school ranking may show such situation, In this paper we consider maximum likelihood estimation of cell probabilities when a crossing point exists, We first assume a known crossing point and find an estimator. The estimation procedure for the case of unknown crossing point is just a straightforward extension. A real data is analyzed for an illustrative purpose.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine empirically the short- and long-run determinants of entrepreneurial activity in a sample of 15 the Middle East and North African economies between 2006 and 2018. More specifically, four groups of determinants are considered in the analysis, namely economic, demographic, business environment, and institutional. Given the autoregressive feature of the entrepreneurial activity process, a dynamic panel data model is estimated using the system GMM estimator. Findings reveal that unemployment, trade openness, population density, and economic freedom are the main drivers of new business creation in the short-run, while the cost and number of procedures to start a new business negatively affect entrepreneurship. In the long-run, the same findings hold true. Moreover, education and political stability and the absence of violence/terrorism positively affect entrepreneurial activity. Policy recommendations are accordingly designed.

  • Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate various spectral estimators used in LDV signal processing. In order to simulate a particle arrival time statistics known as the doubly stochastic poisson process, an autoregressive vector model was adopted to construct a primary velocity field. The conditional Poisson process with a random rate parameter was generated through the rescaling time process using the mean value function. The direct transform based on random sampling sequences and the standard periodogram using periodically resampled data by the sample and hold interpolation were applied to obtain power spectral density functions. For low turbulent intensity flows, the direct transform with a constant Poisson intensity is in good agreement with the theoretical spectrum. The periodogram using the sample and hold sequences is better than the direct transform in the view of the stability and the weighting of the velocity bias for high data density flows. The high Reynolds stress and high fluctuation of the transverse velocity component affects the velocity bias which increases the distortion of spectral components in the direct transform.
