Near net shape forming of 316L stainless steel powder was investigated under hot isostatic pressing. To simulate densification and deformation of a powder compact in a container during hot isostatic pressing, the constitutive model of Abouaf and co-workers was implemented into a finite element analysis. An optimal design technique based on the design sensitivity was applied to the container design during hot isostatic pressing. The optimal shape of the container was predicted from the desired final shape of a powder compact by iterative calculations. Experimental data of 316L stainless steel powder showed that the optimally designed container allowed precise forming of the desired powder compact during hot isostatic pressing.

Recently, an expansion of safety facilities has been widely applied to effectively manage the safety of train operation due to increase of the high-speed section of the general railway and the introduction of high-speed train. Accordingly, performance improvement, upgrading and high reliability of existing safety devices are required. the dragging detector, one of the safety devices, is an analogue system that consists of closed circuit with an electric current flows and operates when the closed circuit is opened by the impact of the dragging object. Such method has unreasonable problem that should be replaced after being detected. It is need to replace with an automatic return type dragging detector which is easy to maintain. In addition, it is necessary to develop a dragging detector that applicable to general railway and urban railway including high-speed railway, in accordance with the speeding up and densification of trains, although it is currently applied only to high-speed railway. In this paper, we propose an automatic return type dragging detector which has versatility and excellent maintainability with digital sensor and real time monitoring.
Permeability coefficient of concrete is a substaintial key parameter for understanding the durability performance of concrete and its microstructural densification. Many researches for the issue have been accomplished, however, it is very rare to deal with the theoretical study on permeability coefficient in connection with carbonation of concrete and the the effect of volumetric fraction of cement paste or aggregate on the permeability coefficient. The majority of these researches have not dealt with this issue combined with carbonation of concrete, although carbonation can significantly impact on the permeability coefficient of concrete. The purpose of this study is to establish a fundamental approach to compute the permeability coefficeint of (non)carbonated concrete. When simulating a microstructural characteristics as a starting point for deriving a model for the permeability coefficient by the numerical simulation program for cementitious materials, HYMOSTRUC, a more realistic formulation can be achieved. For several compositions of cement pastes, the permeability coefficient was calculated with the analytical formulation, followed by a microstructure-based model. Emphasis was on the microstructural changes and its effective change of the permeability coefficient of carbonated concrete. For carbonated concrete, reduced porosity was calculated and this was used for calculating the permeability coefficeint. The computational result was compared with experimental outcome.

This paper describes the system engineering approach for the heat transfer analysis of plus7 fuel rod for APR1400 using, a commercial software, ANSYS. The fuel rod is composed of fuel pellets, fill gas, end caps, plenum spring and cladding. The heat is transferred from the pellet outward by conduction through the pellet, fill gas and cladding and further by convection from the cladding surface to the coolant in the flow channel. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the temperature and heat flux change from the fuel centerline to the cladding surface when having maximum fuel centerline temperature at 100% power. This phenomenon is modelled using the ANSYS FEM code and analyzed for steady state temperature distribution across the fuel pellet and clad and the results were compared to the standard values given in APR1400 SSAR. Specifically the applicability of commercial software in the evaluation of nuclear fuel temperature distribution has been accounted. It is note that special codes have been used for fuel rod mechanical analysis which calculates interrelated effects of temperature, pressure, cladding elastic and plastic behavior, fission gas release, and fuel densification and swelling under the time-varying irradiation conditions. To satisfactorily meet this objective we apply system engineering methodologies to formulate the process and allow for verification and validation of the results acquired. The close proximity of the results obtained validated the accuracy of the FEM analysis of the 2D axisymmetric model and 3D model. This result demonstrated the validity of commercial software instead of proprietary in-house code that is more costly to develop and maintain.
Vacuum hot pressing has been used for the development of titanium metal matrix composites using foil-fiber-foil method. Heterogeneous microstructures prior to and following consolidation have been quantified, and the relations to densification behavior investigated. As shown by the results, dramatic variations of the microstructures including equiaxed $\alpha$, transformed $\beta$ and $ Widmanst\ddot{a}tten$$\alpha$ are obtained during the process according to the fiber distributions. The dependence of microstructures on the consolidation then has been explained in terms of the change in mechanisms such as grain growth and recrystallization that occur with changing levels of inhomogeneity of deformation. Further, micro-mechanics based constitutive model enabling the evolution of density over time together with the evolutions of microstructure to be predicted has been developed. The mode developed is then implemented into finite element scheme so that practical process simulation has been carried out.
Recently, due to environmental problems caused by densification and high rise of urban areas, interests in air flow is increasing and appropriate shape and layout design of buildings is required. Therefore, in this study, we intend to propose an experimental method that can observe the air flow around a building using thermochromic pigment. Thermochromic pigments have limitations in observing precise temperature changes due to the characteristic that the color changes only with respect to a specific temperature, but they have the advantages of easy configuration of experimental equipment and short time required for experiments. In this study, the air flow tendencies around a building was examined by performing CFD analysis for a simple model and then compared with the thermochromic experiment results in order to review the usefulness of the proposed experimental method. As a result of the experiment, it was possible to observe the formation of separated flow and vortex region generated by buildings using the charateristics of thermochromic pigment and it was confirmed that the proposed method can be useful for buildings design and urban city planning.
Molded pulp products has become more attractive than traditional materials such as expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) owing to low-priced recycled paper, environmental benefits such as biodegradability, and low production cost. In this study, various design factors regarding compression and cushioning characteristics of the molded pulp cushion with truncated pyramid-shaped structural units were analyzed using a test specimen with multiple structural units. The adopted structural factors were the geometric shape, wall thickness, and depth of the structural unit. The relative humidity was set at two levels. We derived the cushion curve model of the target molded pulp cushion using the stress-energy methodology. The coefficient of determination was approximately 0.8, which was lower than that for EPS (0.98). The cushioning performance of the molded pulp cushion was affected more by the structural factors of the structural unit than by the material characteristics. Repeated impacts, higher static stress, and drop height decreased the cushioning performance. Its compression behavior was investigated in four stages: elastic, first buckling, sub-buckling, and densification. It had greater rigidity during initial deformation stages; then, during plastic deformation, the rigidity was greatly reduced. The compression behavior was influenced by structural factors such as the geometric shape and depth of the structural unit and environmental conditions, rather than material properties. The biggest difference in the compression and cushioning characteristics of molded pulp cushion compared to EPS is that it is greatly affected by structural factors, and in addition, strength and resilience are expected to decrease due to humidity and repetitive loads, so future research is needed.

Urban densification has necessitated the development of subterranean spaces such as subway networks and underground tunnels to facilitate the dispersal and movement of populations. Development of these underground spaces requires excavation from the ground surface, which can induce groundwater flow and potentially lead to ground subsidence and sinkholes, damaging structures. To mitigate these risks, it is essential to model groundwater flow prior to construction, analyze its characteristics, and predict potential groundwater discharge during excavation. In this study, we collected meteorological, topographical, and soil conditions data for the city of ○○, where tunnel construction was planned. Using the Visual MODFLOW program, we modeled the groundwater flow. Excavation sections were set as drainage points to monitor groundwater discharge during the excavation process, and the effectiveness of seepage control measures was assessed. The model was validated by comparing measured groundwater levels with those predicted by the model, yielding a coefficient of determination of 0.87. Our findings indicate that groundwater discharge is most significant at the beginning of the excavation. Additionally, the presence of seepage barriers was found to reduce groundwater discharge by approximately 59%.
The FUel Rod Analysis(FURA) code is developed using two-dimensional finite element methods for axisymmetric and plane stress analysis of fuel rod. It predicts the thermal and mechanical behavior of fuel rod during normal and load follow operations. To evaluate the exact temperature distribution and the inner gas pressure, the radial deformation of pellet and clad, the fission gas release are considered over the full-length of fuel rod. The thermal element equation is derived using Galerkin's techniques. The displacement element equation is derived using the principle of virtual works. The mechanical analysis can accommodate various components of strain: elastic, plastic, creep and thermal strain as well as strain due to swelling, relocation and densification. The 4-node quadratic isoparametric elements are adopted, and the geometric model is confined to a half-pellet-height region with the assumption that pellet-pellet interaction is symmetrical. The pellet cracking and crack healing, pellet-cladding interaction are modelled. The Newton-Raphson iteration with an implicit algorithm is applied to perform the analysis of non-linear material behavior accurately and stably. The pellet and cladding model has been compared with both analytical solutions and experimental results. The observed and predicted results are in good agreement. The general behavior of fuel rod is calculated by axisymmetric system and the cladding behavior against radial crack is used by plane stress system. The sensitivity of strain aging of PWR fuel cladding tube due to load following is evaluated in terms of linear power, load cycle frequency and amplitude.
