Numerical Analysis of Axial-Flow Cyclone Separator for Subway Station HVAC System Pre-Filter

  • In the Korean subway station, three types of pre-filters, which include auto filter, electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and auto cleaning demister, are widely used. However, these devices have some problems such as the difficulty of maintenance and high operating cost. In this study, axial-flow cyclone separator was employed as a pre-filter inside a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed on a single unit axial-flow cyclone and coupled unit axial-flow cyclone. Calculated and measured pressure drop of the designed axial-flow cyclone were found be comparable to other types of pre-filters and the observed cut-off diameter was less than 10 micron. Considering lower operating and maintenance cost, axial-flow cyclone was proved to be a better solution as a pre-filter.

  • The evaporative desalination system with solar energy would be the efficient and attractive method to get fresh water. This study was described the development of Multi Effect Distillation(MED) with solar energy desalination system. The system was designed and manufactured Multi effect distillation on the capacity of $3m^3$/day. The experimental apparatus consists mainly of ejector pump, Hot water pump, flow meter, demister, cooler, evaporator and condenser. Evaporator and condenser were made Shell&Tube Heat Exchanger type with corrugated tube. The experimental variables were chosen $75^{\circ}C$ for hot water inlet temperature, 40, 60 and $80{\ell}$/min for hot water inlet volume flow rate, 6.0 and $8.0{\ell}$/min for evaporator feed seawater flow rate, $18^{\circ}C$ for sea water inlet temperature to cover the average sea water temperature and the salinity of sea water is measured about 33,000 PPM (parts per million). for a year in Korea. This study was analyzed the results of thermal performance of Multi Effect Distillation. The results are as follows, The experimental Multi effect distillation is required about 40 kW heat source for production of $3m^3$/day fresh water. Various operating flow rate was confirm in the experiments to get the optimum design data and the results showed that the optimum total flow was $8.0{\ell}$/min. Comparison of Single Effect Distillation with Multi Effect Distillation showed MED is at least more than double of SED.

  • Particulate matter (PM) is one of the major indoor air pollutants especially in the subway station in Korea. In order to remove PM in the subway station, several kinds of PM removal system such as roll-filter, auto-washable air filter, demister, and electrostatic precipitator are used in the air handling unit (AHU) of subway stations. However, those systems are prone to operation and maintenance problems since the filter-regeneration unit consisting of electrical or water jet parts might malfunction due to the high load of particulates unless the filter medium is periodically replaced. In this study, the use of axial-flow cyclone was proposed for particulate filter unit in the AHU for its low operation and maintenance cost. Novel shape of axial-flow cyclone was designed by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The shape of vortex vane was optimized in terms of pressure drop and tangential velocity. In addition, CFD analysis was validated experimentally through the pressure drop measurement of mock-up model. We found that pressure drop and tangential velocity of fluid through the axia-flow cyclone was significantly affected by the rotating degree of vortex vane and the numerical prediction of pressure drop agreed well with experimental measurement.

Corrosion of the Gas-Turbine Engine According to the Environment of the Korean Seas (우리나라 근해 해양환경에 따른 가스터빈엔진 부식에 대한 연구)

  • The sea of the Korean peninsula has undergone various marine changes, including naval vessels, naval operational aircrafts, air force fighters, coastal airports and airfields. In particular, salt directly affected by the marine environment, equipment operating under a high temperature / high speed as the gas turbine is the high temperature corrosion (Hot Corrosion) caused by sulfur components and salinity of the fuel used. When the height of the demister (air intake) is less than 7 m, the salinity of the salt entering the sea increases and the corrosion increases rapidly. In addition, the weapon systems operating in the East Sea than in the West Sea showed a 17% increase in the corrosion rate due to the relatively high salinity scattered by saline, wind, and wave. In order to minimize the salinity inflow, it should be operated at more than 13 m from the sea to minimize rapid hot corrosion.
