Active VM Consolidation for Cloud Data Centers under Energy Saving Approach

  • Cloud computing represent a new era of computing that's forms through the combination of service-oriented architecture (SOA), Internet and grid computing with virtualization technology. Virtualization is a concept through which every cloud is enable to provide on-demand services to the users. Most IT service provider adopt cloud based services for their users to meet the high demand of computation, as it is most flexible, reliable and scalable technology. Energy based performance tradeoff become the main challenge in cloud computing, as its acceptance and popularity increases day by day. Cloud data centers required a huge amount of power supply to the virtualization of servers for maintain on- demand high computing. High power demand increase the energy cost of service providers as well as it also harm the environment through the emission of CO2. An optimization of cloud computing based on energy-performance tradeoff is required to obtain the balance between energy saving and QoS (quality of services) policies of cloud. A study about power usage of resources in cloud data centers based on workload assign to them, says that an idle server consume near about 50% of its peak utilization power [1]. Therefore, more number of underutilized servers in any cloud data center is responsible to reduce the energy performance tradeoff. To handle this issue, a lots of research proposed as energy efficient algorithms for minimize the consumption of energy and also maintain the SLA (service level agreement) at a satisfactory level. VM (virtual machine) consolidation is one such technique that ensured about the balance of energy based SLA. In the scope of this paper, we explore reinforcement with fuzzy logic (RFL) for VM consolidation to achieve energy based SLA. In this proposed RFL based active VM consolidation, the primary objective is to manage physical server (PS) nodes in order to avoid over-utilized and under-utilized, and to optimize the placement of VMs. A dynamic threshold (based on RFL) is proposed for over-utilized PS detection. For over-utilized PS, a VM selection policy based on fuzzy logic is proposed, which selects VM for migration to maintain the balance of SLA. Additionally, it incorporate VM placement policy through categorization of non-overutilized servers as- balanced, under-utilized and critical. CloudSim toolkit is used to simulate the proposed work on real-world work load traces of CoMon Project define by PlanetLab. Simulation results shows that the proposed policies is most energy efficient compared to others in terms of reduction in both electricity usage and SLA violation.

노드의 악의적 행위패턴 및 신뢰수준 기반의 MANET Secure 라무팅 방안 (A Secure Routing Protocol in MANET based on Malicious behavior Pattern of Node and Trust Level)

  • 최근 MANET(Mobile Ad-Hoc Network)에서 보안요소를 추가한 라우팅 연구가 활발히 진행되어왔다. 그러나 기존 연구들은 secure 라우팅 또는 패킷 자체에 대한 악의적인 행위 탐지 중 어느 한 측면에 대해서만 연구가 되어왔다. 본 논문에서는 패킷 자체에 대한 악의적인 행위 및 라우팅 측면에서 보안 요소를 모두 고려한 SRPPnT(A Secure Routing Protocol in MANET based on Malicious Pattern on Node and Trust Level)를 제안한다. SRPPnT는 악의적인 행위가 이루어진 노드를 확인하여 각 노드에 대한 신뢰수준을 측정 후, 획득한 각 노드의 신뢰수준에 따라 라우팅 경로를 설정함으로써 패킷 및 라우팅 경로 설정에 대해 이루어질 수 있는 악의적인 행위를 효율적으로 대응할 수 있다. SRPPnT는 AODV(Ad-Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing)를 기반으로 하였다. NS 네트워크 시뮬레이션 결과를 통해, 제안된 SRPPnT는 기존 프로토콜보다 네트워크 부하를 감소시킨 상태에서 악의적인 노드의 보다 정확하고 신속한 식별과 secure한 라우팅이 이루어짐을 확인하였다.

Determining chlorine injection intensity in water distribution networks: a comparison of backtracking and water age approaches

  • Providing safe and readily available water is vital to maintain public health. One of the most prevalent methods to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases is applying chlorine injection to the treated water before distribution. During the water transmission and distribution, the chlorine will experience a reduction, which can imply potential risks for human health if it falls below the minimum threshold. The ability to determine the appropriate initial intensity of chlorine at the source would be significant to prevent such problems. This study proposes two methods that integrate hydraulic and water quality modeling to determine the suitable intensity of chlorine to be injected into the source water to maintain the minimum chlorine concentration (e.g., 0.2 mg/l) at each demand node. The water quality modeling employs the first-order decay to estimate the rate of chlorine reduction in the water. The first method utilizes a backtracking algorithm to trace the path of water from the demand node to the source during each time step, which helps to accurately determine the travel time through each pipe and node and facilitate the computation of time-dependent chlorine decay in the water delivery process. However, as a backtracking algorithm is computationally intensive, this study also explores an alternative approach using a water age. This approach estimates the elapsed time of water delivery from the source to the demand node and calculate the time-dependent reduction of chlorine in the water. Finally, this study compares the outcomes of two approaches and determines the suitable and effective method for calculating the chlorine intensity at the source to maintain the minimum chlorine level at demand nodes.

A parametric study on seismic fragility analysis of RC buildings

  • Among all the natural disasters, earthquakes are the most destructive calamities since they cause a plenty of injuries and economic losses leaving behind a series of signs of panic. The present study highlights the moment-curvature relationships for the structural elements such as beam and column elements and Non-Linear Static Pushover Analysis of RC frame structures since it is a very simplified procedure of non-linear static analysis. The highly popular model namely Mander's model and Kent and Park model are considered and then, seismic risk evaluation of RC building has been conducted using SAP 2000 version 17 treating uncertainty in strength as a parameter. From the obtained capacity and demand curves, the performance level of the structure has been defined. The seismic fragility curves were developed for the variations in the material strength and damage state threshold are calculated. Also the comparison of experimental and analytical results has been conducted.

  • 본 논문은 전이 영역에서 퍼지 클러스터링 알고리즘을 이용한 multi-level thresholding 방법을 제안한다. 대부분의 임계치 기반 영상 분할은 영상의 히스토 그램 분포를 기반으로 임계치를 결정한다. 그러므로 많은 처리시간과 기억공간을 요구할 뿐만 아니라 복잡하고 무분별한 히스토 그램 분포를 가지는 실영상에서의 임계치 결정에는 어려움이 있다. 본 논문에서는 영상의 대표적인 성분들로 구성된 전이 영역을 추출한 후 퍼지 클러스터링 알고리즘에 의해 최적의 임계치를 결정한다. 전이 영역을 추출하기 위해 이용되는 지역적 엔트로피는 잡음에 강건하며 영상에 내재된 정보를 잘 표현한다는 특성을 가진다. 그리고 퍼지 클러스터링 알고리즘은 복잡하고 무분별한 분포의 실영상에 대해서도 정확히 임계치를 설정할 수 있으며 multi-level thresholding으로 쉽게 확장이 가능하다. 다양한 실영상을 대상으로 실험한 결과, 제안한 방법이 기존의 방법보다 향상된 성능을 가짐을 보였다.

확률적인 중방향 설계시간 교통량 산정 모형에 관한 이론적 해석 (A Theoretical Analysis of Probabilistic DDHV Estimation Models)

  • 본 연구는 전통적인 중방향 설계시간교통량 산정에 대한 개념적 내용을 살펴보고 사례연구를 통해 문제점을 도출하였으며, 이를 개선하기 위해 확률적인 중방향 설계시간교통량 산정 모형을 이론적으로 정립하였다. 도로구간의 교통혼잡을 표현하기 위해서 도로용량이 희망하는 서비스수준을 수용할 수 있도록 확률 분포를 적용한 링크통행시간과 임계치를 정립하였다. 본 연구에서 제안된 확률적인 중방향 설계시간 교통량 모형은 설계속도, 구간길이, 교통량, 차로수, 중차량계수 등을 고려하여 산정하며, 도로용량에 따른 교통혼잡과 경제성 측면을 유동적으로 고려할 수 있기 때문에 도로계획 및 설계단계에 객관적으로 반영할 수 있다. 또한, 이러한 결과는 다양한 유형의 도로에 대해 결측치가 존재하는 상시조사지점이나 수시조사지점의 중방향 설계시간 교통량 예측 모형을 포함한 여러 현실문제들의 더 나은 이해를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Multi-Parameter Based Scheduling for Multi-user MIMO Systems

  • Multi-user multi-input multi-output (MU-MIMO) system has attracted the 4th generation wireless network as one of core technique for performance enrichment. In this system rate control is a challenging problem and another problem is optimization. Proper scheduling can resolve these problems by deciding which set of user and at which rate the users send their data. This paper proposes a new multi-parameter based scheduling (MPS) for downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system under space-time block coding (STBC) transmissions. Goal of this MPS scheme is to offer improved link level performance in terms of a low average bit error rate (BER), high packet delivery ratio (PDR) with improved resource utilization and service fairness among the user. This scheme allows the set of users to send data based on their channel quality and their demand rates. Simulation compares the MPS performance with other scheduling scheme such as fair scheduling (FS), normalized priority scheduling (NPS) and threshold based fair scheduling (TFS). The results obtained prove that MPS has significant improvement in average BER performance with improved resource utilization and fairness as compared to the other scheduling scheme.

Cochlodinium Red Tide Effects on the Respiration of Abalone, Haliotis discus hannai Ino

  • Cochtodinium votykrikoides -related red tide is the most notorious tidal bloom, resulting in mass mortality to marineanimals. This study aimed to test the effect of C. polyknkoides on the lethality to Haliotis discus hannai under con-trolled conditions. The oxygen demand of C. polykrikoides increases to reach its peak duhng the night, while the oxy-gen usage by H. discus hannai was continuously decreased with a threshold of 2 mg L U. The addition of C.polykrikoides did not effect the respiration of the H. discus hannai. However, the usage of oxygen by C. polykrikoidesduhng the night may lead to anoxia in the animal. With aeration, the level of dissolved oxygen (D.O.) was between6.06 and 7.28 mg LU; 90% of abalones survived even with a high concentration of C. potykrikoides (9000 cells mL U).Without aeration (3 mg LU of D.O.), however, the H. discus hannai suffocated immediately. Once 20 hours hadelapsed, all of the abalones were dead. The density of the H. discus hannai population contributed to their mortality.Therefore, aeration during the night and maintaining lower abalone densities is the best way to promote the sur-vivorship of H. discus hannai during a C. polykrikoides red tide.

Is Currency Appreciation or Depreciation Expansionary in Thailand?

  • Many developing countries have attempted to depreciate their currencies in order to make their products cheaper, stimulate exports, shift aggregate demand to the right, and increase aggregate output. However, currency depreciation tends to increase import prices, raise domestic inflation, reduce capital inflows, and shift aggregate supply to the left. The net impact is unclear. The paper incorporates the monetary policy function in the model, which is determined by the inflation gap, the output gap, the real effective exchange rate, and the world real interest rate. Applying an extended IS-MP-AS model (Romer, 2000), the paper finds that real depreciation raised real GDP during 1997.Q1-2005.Q3 whereas real appreciation increased real GDP during 2005.Q4-2017.Q2. In addition, a higher government debt-to-GDP ratio, a lower U.S. real federal funds rate, a higher real stock price, a lower real oil price or a lower expected inflation rate would help increase real GDP. Hence, real depreciation or real appreciation may increase or reduce aggregate output, depending upon the level of economic development. Although expansionary fiscal policy is effective in stimulating the economy, caution needs to be exercised as there may be a debt threshold beyond which a further increase in the debt-to-GDO ratio would hurt economic growth.

도시철도 차량 실내의 이용자 시설 평가와 개선방향 - 체크리스트를 통하여 수도권 노선에 운행 중인 14개 철도 차량을 대상으로 - (An Evaluation of User's Facility and Suggestion for the Improvement on the Interior Design of Metropolitan Railroads Trains - Focus on the opening 14 metropolitan railroad lines in Seoul through checklist -)

  • User-oriented Design is necessary in planning the interior design of Metropolitan Railroads trains, since this is a typical means of transportation in this modem society and all ages people with different body scale use this facility. However, there are little studies about facility panning and zoning of Metropolitan Railroads train considering users. Therefore, in this study, after completing the checklist based on the current legal standards of facility installation of South Korea and Japan, we examined user's facility and suggest several improvement of the opening 14 metropolitan railroad lines in Seoul. Then, we evaluated this facilities according to 41 standards; general facility(24 standards), safety facility(4 standards), guide facility(11 standards), other facility(4 standards). The result of this study may be summarized as follows. 1) General facility has to be designed to obtain lots of room for storage and this facility should be fixed up tightly with secure system. 2) Safety facility should be designed to minimize a difference of floor-level between threshold of train and ground. Also, using various color and material could help passengers to distinguish different space and facility. 3) Guide facility should be designed to guide passengers to the accurate direction with proper sign design in the pathway of Metropolitan railroad train. Also, more various color, which based on the research about physiological and psychological effect, should be used to guide people. 4) Other facility should equip more visual system using common good and informative contents. Through this study, we try to understand the current interior physical condition of Metropolitan Railroads trains. However, for future studies, it is expected to supplement evaluation standards considering aesthetic design, environmental improvement of indoor air quality and the satisfaction and demand of Metropolitan Railroads trains.
