  • Compared to terrestrial RF communications, underwater acoustic communications have several limitations such as limited bandwidth, high level of fading effects, and a large underwater propagation delay. In this paper, in order to tackle those limitations of underwater communications and to make it possible to form a large underwater monitoring systems, we propose a hierarchical underwater network architecture, which consists of underwater sensors, clusterheads, underwater/surface sink nodes, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). In the proposed architecture, for the maximization of packet delivery ratio and the minimization of underwater sensor's energy consumption, a hybrid routing protocol is used. More specifically, cluster members use Tree based routing to transmit sensing data to clusterheads. AUVs on optimal trajectory movements collect the aggregated data from clusterhead and finally forward the data to the sink node. Also, in order to minimize the maximum travel distance of AUVs, an Integer Linear Programming based algorithm is employed. Performance analysis through simulations shows that the proposed architecture can achieve a higher data delivery ratio and lower energy consumption than existing routing schemes such as gradient based routing and geographical forwarding. • Recently, FPGA-based AI processors are being studied actively. Deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) are basic computational structures performed by AI processors and require a very large amount of multiplication. Considering that the multiplication coefficients used in CNN inference operation are all constants and that an FPGA is easy to design a multiplier tailored to a specific coefficient, this paper proposes a methodology to optimize the multiplier. The method utilizes 2's complement and distributive law to minimize the number of bits with a value of 1 in a multiplication coefficient, and thereby reduces the number of required stacked adders. As a result of applying this method to the actual example of implementing CNN in FPGA, the logic usage is reduced by up to 30.2% and the propagation delay is also reduced by up to 22%. Even when implemented with an ASIC chip, the hardware area is reduced by up to 35% and the delay is reduced by up to 19.2%.

  • This paper proposed an Inter-Carrier-Interference (ICI) Canceling Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) receiver for 5G mobile system to support 500 km/h linear motor high speed terrestrial transportation service. A receiver in such high-speed train sees the transmission channel which is composed of multiple Doppler-shifted propagation paths. Then, a loss of sub-carrier orthogonality due to Doppler-spread channels causes ICI. The ICI Canceler is realized by the following three steps. First, using the Demodulation Reference Symbol (DMRS) pilot signals, it analyzes three parameters such as attenuation, relative delay, and Doppler-shift of each multi-path component. Secondly, based on the sets of three parameters, Channel Transfer Function (CTF) of sender sub-carrier number 𝒏 to receiver sub-carrier number 𝒍 is generated. In case of 𝒏≠𝒍, the CTF corresponds to ICI factor. Thirdly, since ICI factor is obtained, by applying ICI reverse operation by Multi-Tap Equalizer, ICI canceling can be realized. ICI canceling performance has been simulated assuming severe channel condition such as 500 km/h, 2 path reverse Doppler Shift for QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM and 256QAM modulations. In particular, for modulation schemes below 16QAM, we confirmed that the difference between BER in a 2 path reverse Doppler shift environment and stationary environment at a moving speed of 500 km/h was very small when the number of taps in the multi-tap equalizer was set to 31 taps or more. We also confirmed that the BER performance in high-speed mobile communications for multi-level modulation schemes above 64QAM is dramatically improved by the use of a multi-tap equalizer.

  • Internet of Things(IoT) technology is developing to a stage where the Internet and objects are connected and objects themselves analyze and judge data to interconnect the real world and the virtual world in real time. This technology consists of sensors, actuators, devices, and networks, and it is being applied in various fields. As the number of IoT devices and applications increases, data traffic also increases. In this paper, a messaging system is designed and implemented in order to analyze the performance between an IoT device and MQTT broker. The experimental was performed to measure MQTT-based round-trip time and message transmission time between the IoT device and the broker. The result shows that there is no packet loss, and propagation delay affects round-trip time.

  • Currently, positioning methods for LBS(Location Based Service) are GPS and network-based positioning techniques that use mobile communication networks. In these methods, however, the accuracy of positioning decreases due to the propagation delay caused by the non-line-of-sight(NLOS) effect and the repeater. To address this disadvantage, the CDMA system uses Pattern Matching algorithm. The Pattern Matching algorithm constructs a database of the propagation characteristics of the RF signals measured during the GPS positioning along with the positioned locations, so that the location can be provided by comparing the propagation characteristics of the received signals and the database, upon a user's request. In the area where GPS signals are not received, however, a database cannot be constructed. There are problem that the accuracy of positioning decreases due to the area without a database Because Pattern Matching algorithm depend on database existence. Therefore, this paper proposed a pilot signal strength prediction algorithm to enable construction of databases for areas without databases, so as to improve the performance of the Pattern Matching algorithm. The database was constructed by predicting the pilot signals in the area without a database using the proposed algorithm, and the Pattern Matching algorithm analysed positioning performance.

  • Actual maritime exercise for improving the capability of submarine sonar operator leads to a lot of cost and constraints. Sonar simulator maximizes the capability of sonar operator and training effect by solving these problems and simulating a realistic battlefield environment. In this study, a passive sonar simulator algorithm is suggested, where the simulator is divided into three modules: maneuvering module, noise source module, and sound propagation module. Maneuvering module is implemented in three-dimensional coordinate system and time interval is set as the rate of vessel changing course. Noise source module consists of target noise, ocean ambient noise, and self noise. Target noise is divided into modulated/unmodulated and narrowband/broadband signals as their frequency characteristics, and they are applied to ship radiated noise level depending on the vessel tonnage and velocity. Ocean ambient noise is simulated depending on the wind noise considering the waveguide effect and other ambient noise. Self noise is also simulated for flow noise and insertion loss of sonar-dome. The sound propagation module is based on ray propagation, where summation of amplitude, phase, and time delay for each eigen-ray is multiplied by target noise in the frequency domain. Finally, simulated results based on various scenarios are in good agreement with generated noise in the real ocean.

  • With the advance of wireless communication technology in terrestrial area, underwater communication is also evolving very fast from a simple point-to-point transmission to an elaborate networked communications. Underwater acoustic channel has quite different features comparing with the terrestrial radio channel in terms of propagation delay, Doppler shift, multipath, and path loss. Thus, existing technologies developed for terrestrial communication might not work properly in underwater channel. Especially medium access control (MAC) protocols which highly depend on propagation phenomenon should be newly designed for underwater network. CSMA/CA has drawn lots of attention as a candidate of underwater MAC protocol, since it is able to resolve a packet collision and the hidden node problem. However, a received signal could be degraded by the interferences from the nodes locating outside the receiver's propagation radius. In this paper, we study the effects of interference on the CSMA/CA based underwater network. We derived the SNR with the interference using the sonar equation and analyzed the degradation of the RTS/CTS effects. These results are compared with the terrestrial results to understand the differences. Finally we summarized the design considerations in CSMA/CA based underwater network.

  • In this paper a new architecture of 24-bit two's complement adder is designed by using RB(Redundant Binary) arithmetic which has the advantage of CPF(Carry-Propagation-Free). A MPPL(Modified PPL) XOR/XNOR gate is applied to improve a TC2RB(Two's Complement to RB SUM converter) speed and to reduce the number of transistors, and we proposed two types adder which used a fast RB2TC(RB SUM to Two's Complement converter). The property of two types adder is followings. The improvement of TYPE 1 adder speed is archived through the use of VGS(Variable Group Select) method and TYPE 2 adder is through the use of a 64-bit GCG(Group Change bit Generator) circuit and a 8-bit TYPE 1 adder. For 64-bit, TYPE 1 adder can be expected speed improvement of 23.5%, 25.7% comparing with the CLA and CSA, and TYPE 2 adder can be expected 41.2%, 45.9% respectively. The propagation delay of designed 24-bit TYPE 1 adder is 1.4ns and TYPE 2 adder is 1.2ns. The implementation is highly regular with repeated modules and is very well suited for microprocessor systems and fast DSP units.

  • Compared to a terrestrial communication, the high BER(Bit Error Ratio) and low channel bandwidth are the major factor of throughput degradation due to characteristics of underwater channel. Therefore, a MAC protocol must be designed to solve this problem in UWASNs(Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks). MAC protocols for UWASNs can be classified into two major types according to the contention scheme(Contention-free scheme and Contention-based scheme). In large scale of sensor networks, a Contention-based scheme is commonly used due to time-synchronize problem of Contention-free scheme. In the contention-based scheme, Each node contends with neighbor nodes to access network channel by using Back-off algorithm. But a Slot-Time of Back-off algorithm has long delay times which are cause of decrease network throughput. In this paper, we propose a new scheme to solve this problem. The proposed scheme uses variable Slot-Time instead of fixed Slot-Time. Each node measures propagation delay from neighbors which are used by Slot-time. Therefore, Slot-Times of each node are optimized by considering node deployment. Consequently, the wasted-time for Back-off is reduced and network throughput is improved. A new mac protocol performance in throughput and delay is assessed through NS3 and compared with existing MAC protocol(MACA-U). Finally, it was proved that the MAC protocol using the proposed scheme has better performance than existing MAC protocol as a result of comparison.

  • The propagation and delay properties in opical fiber are particularly attractive because digital signal processing and conventional analog signal processing techniques such as those using surface acoustic wave devices are limited In their usefulness for signal bandwidth exceeding one or two GHz, although they are very effective at lower frequencies. Since an accurate, low loss and short time delay elements can be obtained by using such an optical fiber, optical signal precessing has attracted much attention for high speed and broad-band signal precessing in particular channel separation filtering for optical FDM signals. In this paper, we consider a coherent optical lattice filter, which uses coherent light sources and consists of directional couplers and optical fiber delay elemnts. The optical fiber fitters are more restricted than the usual digital filters. The reasons are as follows. 1) the coupling coefficients of directional couplers are restricted to the number between 0 and 1. 2) optical signal E(complex amplitude) is divided into J If-$\boxUl$ and J L/7$\div$$\boxUl$ at the directional coupler. Considering these restrictions and in this case all the coupling coefficients of summing and branching elements are set to be equal, we have given design formulae for optical lattice filter, which make the best use of optical signal energy.
