The physical properties of polymer are greatly influenced by the extent to which a resin cures. The presence of un reacted monomer can, have a plasticizing effect on the polymer, thereby altering the physical and mechanical properties of dentin bonding agent (DBA). If the DBA does not polymerize sufficiently, it will leave a weak bonding layer and lead to lower bond strength. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strengths(SBS) and the degree of conversion (DC) of 4 commercialy avilable dentin bonding systems which are composed of 2 multi-bottle systems [Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SMP), AeliteBond(AB)] and 2 onebottle systems [SingleBond(SB), One-Step(OS)]. For shear bond strength measurement, labial surfaces of freshly extracted bovine incisors were ground with # 600 grit SiC paper to expose dentin. Four different groups of samples were formed, with 10 samples. being made for each of the 4 commercial DBA in each group according to the curing sequences of DBA and overlayer thickness of composites: Group I (standard cure and 1mm thick composites) : The DBA was light cured and the composites of 1mm thickness was applied ; Group II (standard cure and 2mm thick composites) : The DBA was light cured and the composites of 2mm thickness was applied; Group III (simultaneous cure and 1mm thick composites) : The DBA was not light-cured and simultaneously cured with composites of 1mm thickness; Group N (simultaneous cure and 2mm thick composites) : The DBA was. not light-cured and simultaneously cured with composites of 2mm thickness. The SBS was measured immediately after the composites was bonded to the bovine dentin using an Instron machine. The DC of the DBA was examined in a thin film under simulated conditions of the experimental groups according to the curing sequences and overlayer thickness of composites in the SBS test. using a Fourier transform Infrared(FTIR) spectrometer. The following results were obtained from SBS tests and DC measurements 1. In SBS tests, the multi-bottle DBA(SMP, AB) had a generally higher bond strength values than the one bottle DBA(SB, OS). In DC measurements, the one bottle DBA(SB, OS) had a significantly higher DC than the multi-bottle DBA(SMP, AB). 2. In all DBAs except OS, there was no significant difference between the bond strength of group I (standard cure and 1mm thick composites) and that of group III (simultaneous cure and 1mm thick composites). SMP, SB in Group I had a significantly higher DC than those in group III, but AB, OS in group I had a significantly lower DC than those in group III 3. All DBAs in Goup II (standard cure and 2mm thick composites) had significantly higher bond strength and DC than those in Group N (simultaneous cure and 2mm thick composites). 4. In all DBAs, there was no significantly different SBS and DC between Group I and Group II, but all DBAs in Group III had significantly higher SBS and DC than those in Group IV.
As a part of abating formaldehyde emission of urea-formaldehyde resin, this study was conducted to investigate the rmalcure kinetics of both neat and modified urea-formaldehyde resins using differential scanning calorimetry. Neat urea-formaldehyde resins with three different formaldehyde/urea mol ratios (1.4, 1.2 and 1.0) were modified by adding three different additives (sodium bisulfite, sodium hydrosulfite and acrylamide) at two different levels (1 and 3wt%). An isoconversional method at four different heating rates was employed to characterize thermal cure kinetics of these urea-formaldehyde resins to obtain activation energy ($E{\alpha}$) dependent on the degree of conversion (${\alpha}$). The $E{\alpha}$ values of neat urea-formaldehyde resins (formaldehyde/urea = 1.4 and 1.2) consistently changed as the ${\alpha}$ increased. Neat and modified urea-formaldehyde resins of these two F/U mol ratios did show a decrease of the $E{\alpha}$ at the final stage of the conversion while the $E{\alpha}$ of neat urea-formaldehyde resin (formaldehyde/urea = 1.0) increased as the ${\alpha}$ increased, indicating the presence of incomplete cure. However, the change of the $E{\alpha}$ values of all urea-formaldehyde resins was consistent to that of the Ea values. The isoconversional method indicated that thermal cure kinetics of neat and modified urea-formaldehyde resins showed a strong dependence on the resin viscosity as well as diffusion control reaction at the final stage of the conversion.
NR composites with different curing systems were aged thermally at 60, 70, 80, and $90^{\circ}C$ for 2-185 days in a convection oven, and the changes in the crosslink density were investigated as a function of the accelerated thermal aging. The overall crosslink densities increased with increasing aging time irrespective of the aging temperatures and curing systems. The changes in crosslink density were enhanced by increasing the aging temperature. The degree of the increased crosslink density was in the following order: "the conventional cure system > the semi-EV system > the EV system". For short term thermal aging, the change in crosslink density with the aging time was complicated, particularly for low temperature aging. The activation energies of the change in crosslink density with thermal aging using the conventional and semi-EV cure systems increased and then remained relatively constant with increasing aging time, whereas that of the specimen with an EV cure system tended to increase linearly. The experimental results were explained by the dissociation of the existing polysulfidic linkages and the formation of new cross links through the crosslinking-related chemicals remaining in the sample.
Silicone is recently used for LED chip lense due to its good thermal stability and optical transmittance. In order to predict residual stress which causes optical briefringence and mechanical warpage of silicone, finite element analysis was conducted for curing process during silicone molding. For analysis of curing process, a dynamic cure kinetics model was derived based on the differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) test and applied to the material properties for finite element analysis. Finite element simulation result showed that the slow cure reduced abrupt reaction heat and it was predicted decrease of the residual stress.
This study focused on the effect of autonomic microcapsules on the mechanical properties of structural material. Several types of microcapsules with healing agents were manufactured by varying agitation speed of high speed stirrer. The size distribution of microcapsules was measured by a particle size analzer. The epoxy specimens embedded with microcapsules were manufactured and the degree of cure of such epoxy specimen was measured by a differential scanning calorimetry. The tensile modulus and tensile strength in epoxy specimens embedded with microcapsules were evaluated in order to investigate the effects of microcapsules on mechanical properties of structural materials. The configuration of microcapsules and morphology of fracture surfaces for the epoxy specimen were examined by an optical microcope and a scanning electron microscope. According to the results, tensile strength of the epoxy specimen embedded with microcapsules was indicated a little reduction, but tensile modulus was not much affected on microcapsules.

In order to reduce the manufacturing costs of the glass lens, it is necessary to manufacture a lens using a UV curable resin or a thermosetting resin, which is a curable material, in order to replace a glass lens. In the case of forming a lens using a thermosetting material, it is necessary to form several lenses at once using the wafer-level lens manufacturing technologies due to the long curing time of the material. When a lens is manufactured using a curable material, an error in the shape of the lens due to the shrinkage of the material during the curing process is an important cause of defects. The major factors for these shape errors and deformations are the shrinkage and the change of mechanical properties in the process of changing from a liquid material during curing to a solid state after complete curing. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the curing process of the material and to examine the shrinkage rate and change of physical properties according to the degree cure. In addition, it is necessary to proceed with CAE for lens molding using these and to review problems in lens manufacturing in advance. In this study, the viscoelastic properties of the material were measured during the curing process using a rheometer. Using the results, Rheological investigation of cure kinetics was performed. At the same time, The shrinkage of the material was measured and simple mathematical models were created. And using the results, the molding process of a single lens was analyzed using Comsol, a commercial S/W. In addition, the experiment was conducted to compare and verify the CAE results. As a result, it was confirmed that the shrinkage rate of the material had a great influence on the shape precision of the final product.
PURPOSE. To assess the degree of conversion (DC) and light irradiance delivered to light-cured and dual-cured cements by application of different light sources through various types of monolithic computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. RelyX Ultimate Clicker light-cured and dual-cured resin cement specimens with 1.5-mm thicknesses (n=300, 10/group), were placed under four types of crystalline core structure (Vita Enamic, Vita Suprinity, GC Ceresmart, Degudent Prettau Anterior). The specimens were irradiated for 40 seconds with an LED Soft-Start or pulse-delay unit or 20 seconds with a QTH unit. DC ratios were determined by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) after curing the specimen at 1 day and 1 month. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test (for paired comparison) and the Kruskal-Wallis H test (for multiple comparison), with a significance level of P<.05. RESULTS. DC values were the highest for RelyX Ultimate Clicker light-cure specimens polymerized with the LED Soft-Start unit. The combination of the Vita Suprinity disc and RelyX Ultimate Clicker dual-cure resin cement yielded significantly higher values at both timepoints with all light units (all, P<.05). CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that the DC of RelyX Ultimate Clicker dual-cure resin cement was improved significantly by the use of Vita Suprinity and the LED Soft-Start light unit. We strongly recommend the combined use of an LED light unit and dual-cure luting cement for monolithic ceramic restorations.
