  • This study presents an analysis model to estimate the shear strength of a reinforced concrete (RC) member with corroded tensile reinforcements. The thick-walled cylinder theory was modified to fit the dual potential capacity model to reflect interdependent failure mechanisms, including the degradation effect of bonds in corroded tensile reinforcement. In the proposed model, it is considered that the shear failure of corroded RC members with no proper anchorage detail is primarily dominated by the flexural-bond mechanism, where insufficient bond strength is provided owing to corrosion damage. However, when tensile reinforcements are properly anchored in the end regions using end hooks or mechanical devices, it is assumed that the tied-arch action can be developed as a secondary shear transfer mechanism, even under severe corrosion damage. The proposed model was verified by comparison with shear test results of corroded RC members collected from the literature, and it appeared that the proposed model can estimate their shear strengths with a good level of accuracy, regardless of various anchorage details and corrosion rates in tensile reinforcements.

  • Benzoyl peroxide is very toxic to aquatic organisms but environmental concentration or exposure effects were not studied. Distribution of the chemical among multimedia environment was estimated using EQC(Equilibrium Criterion) model based on the physical-chemical properties to evaluate the risk of benzoyl peroxide in environment. Level I describes a situation that 100,000 kg of benzoyl peroxide is emitted into the environment which is equilibrium and steady-state without degradation and advection condition. Level II describes a situation that a constant rate of 1,000kg/h of benzoyl peroxide is continuously discharged into the environment which is equilibrium and steady-state with degradation and advection condition. Level III describes a situation that 1,000 kg/h of benzoyl peroxide is continuously introduced in each air, water, soil, and sediment compartment which are non-equilibrium and steady-state with degradation, advection, and inter-media transfer condition. In Level I and II calculations the chemical was distributed to soil(68.3%) and water(28.7%). In Level III calculation it was primarily distributed to soil(99.9%) and overall residence time was estimated to be 3.4 years. Benzoyl peroxide can be persistent in environment.

  • The effects of browning Products (BP) from Kanjang(soy sauce) and charcoal on the degradation of aflatoxin $B_1(AFB_1)$ in Kanjang and its model system were studied. Approximately 60% of $AFB_1$ was degraded in the presence of 0.05% BP at pH 7 of phosphate buffer after 2 days of incubation at $30^{\circ}C$. The mutagenicity of the $AFB_1$ which reacted with the BP was decreased to about 50% and 70% in Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 strains, respectively (p<0.05). When a few pieces of charcoal were added to home made Kanjang, $AFB_1$ was quite stable for 5days at $30^{\circ}C$, however, about 80% of $AFB_1$ was removed when the charcoal was either in distilled water or in 20% of NaCl solution after 2 days of incubation. Activated carbon instead of the charcoal removed $AFB_1$ completely in the all samples under the same conditions.

  • Method for performance monitoring and diagnosis of a MIMO control system has been studied aiming at application to model predictive control (MPC) for industrial processes. The performance monitoring part is designed on the basis of the traditional SPC/SQC method. To meet the underlying premise of Schwart chart observation that the observed variable should be univariate and independent, the process variables are decorrelated temporally as well as spatially before monitoring. The diagnosis part was designed to identify the root of performance degradation among the controller, process, and disturbance. For this, a method to estimate the model-error and disturbance signal has been devised. The proposed methods were evaluated through numerical examples.

  • The increased diversity of different types of energy sources requires moving towards smart distribution networks. This paper proposes a probabilistic DG (distributed generation) units planning model to determine technology type, capacity and location of DG units while simultaneously allocating ESS (energy storage systems) based on pre-determined capacities. This problem is studied in a wind integrated power system considering loads, prices and wind power generation uncertainties. A suitable method for DG unit planning will reduce costs and improve reliability concerns. Objective function is a cost function that minimizes DG investment and operational cost, purchased energy costs from upstream networks, the defined cost to reliability index, energy losses and the investment and degradation costs of ESS. Electrical load is a time variable and the model simulates a typical radial network successfully. The proposed model was solved using the DICOPT solver under GAMS optimization software.

  • Many different damage models have been prolxlsed for concrete in the past. Most of these are not well suited to predict the residual strength of damaged RC members. This paper reviews some basic facts alxlut concrete damage and uses these to systematically model damage as a low-cycle fatigue phenomenon. Instead of the number of load cycles to failure the energy dissipation capacity of a member is taken as the main variable, which depends on many different factors. The model is capable of simulating reasonably well the strength and stiffness degradation of I{C members subjected to strong cyclic loads.

  • Many damage models has been developed to express the degradation of materials. However, only minor damage model for concrete has been developed because of the heterogeneity of it unlike metals. To model the damaged behavior of concrete, this peculiarity as well as a load-induced anisotropic feature must be considered. In this paper, basic concepts of the thermodynamic theory is investigated to model the behavior of the damaged concrete in the phenomenological viewpoint. And the general constitutive relations and damage evolution equations are investigated too.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the performance of OFDM systems with adaptive equalizer that considers the frequency offset, the frequency non-selective fading, and two-path microwave Rummer's model channels. First of all, it is analyzed that the performance degradation, which is caused by the offset and the non-selective fading channel, through simulation. As the results of the simulation, the performance of the OFDM system is greatly influenced by the offset and channels. The more the frequency offset is, the worse the performance of the OFDM system is. However, if the adaptive equalizer is adopted to the OFDM system, the performance is enhanced up to the limited rang.

  • Shape memory alloys (SMA) can dissipate energy through hysteresis cycles without significant residual deformation. This paper describes the fabrication and testing of copper-based SMA hourglass-shaped plates for use in energy dissipation devices and the development of a numerical model to reproduce the experiments. The plates were tested under cyclic flexural deformations, showing stable hysteresis cycles without strength degradation. A detailed nonlinear numerical model was developed and validated with the experimental data, using as input the constitutive relationship for the material determined from cyclic tests of material coupons under tension loading. The model adequately reproduces the experimental results. The study is focused on the exploitation of SMA in the martensite phase.

  • At present, KS-1000 which is one of a commercial measurement instrument for motor fault diagnosis has been used in industrial field. The measurement system of KS-1000 is composed of three part : harmonic acquisition, signal processing by KS-1000 algorithm, diagnosis for motor fault. First of all, voltage signal taken from harmonic sensor is analysed for frequency by KS-1000 algorithm. Then, based on the result values of analysis skilled expert makes a judgment about whether motor system is the abnormality or degradation state. But the expert system such a motor fault diagnosis is very difficult to bring the expectable results by mathematical modeling due to the complexity of judgment process. In this reason, we propose an automation system using fuzzy model based on genetic algorithm(GA) that builded a qualitative model of a system without priori knowledge about a system provided numerical input output data.
