  • In this paper, the delamination and deformed FSS caused by residual stresses in the Loop type FSS embedded composites and the transmission characteristic changes due to deformation of FSS by residual stresses were studied. FSS may have different electromagnetic characteristics depending on the type of element, design variables, and array. Therefore, design variables of square loop FSS embedded composites structures were determined to obtain the transmission characteristic for X-band (8~12 GHz). Then the design variables of other types of loops (triangular loop and circular loop) were determined based on the dimensions of square loop. Thereafter, the residual stresses and transmission characteristics of FSS embedded composite structures with various single and double loop FSS's, and stacking sequence of composite laminates were compared.

  • The formation of adiabatic shearband in tungsten heavy alloys(WHA) was studied in this investigation. Five prismatic specimens were loaded by high velocity impacts and treated as plane strain problems. To find out the effect of particle's volume ratio, specimens containing 81%, 93% and 97% volume percents of tungsten particles were used. Also the effects of particle's geometry and size on the formation of shearband were studied for 81% volume percent alloys by small size particle model, large size particle model and undulated particle models, and the results were discussed.be used to diagnose the causes of necking and fracture in industrial practice and to investigate whether these defects were caused by material property variation, changes in lubrication, or incorrect press settings. In non-axisymmetric deep drawing, three modes of forming regimes are found: draw, stretch, plane strain. The stretch mode for non-axisymmetric deep drawing could be defined when the major and minor strains are positive. The draw mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is negative, and plane strain mode could be defined when the major strain is positive and minor strain is zero. Through experiments the draw mode was shown on the wall and flange are one of a drawn cup, while the plane strain and the stretch mode were on the punch head and the punch corner area respectively, We observed that the punch load of elliptical deep drawing was decreased according to increase of die corner radius and the thickness deformation of minor side was more large than major side.

  • X-band phased array antenna module for the compensation of deformed beam direction by wing deformation is designed and fabricated. The phased array antenna module consists of array antenna, phase shifter, power divider and control circuit. To select out the best component, the variation of radiation pattern by wing bending and phase error of components is simulated. The fabricated phased array antenna module shows an antenna gain of 5.84 dBi, a return loss of 13.6 dB and a bandwidth of 10.6 % at 9.375 GHz. The test bed was set up to verify the performance of beam direction compensation. This test confirmed that the main beam direction of array antenna has been well restored under wing bending of 9 %.

  • In this study, fatigue properties and crack growth characteristics of a polycarbonate (PC) were examined during cyclic loading at various mean stress (${\sigma}_{amp}$) and stress amplitude (${\sigma}_{mean}$) conditions. Different S vs. N and da/dN vs. ${\Delta}K$ relations were obtained depending on the loading condition. The higher fatigue strength and the higher resistance of crack growth are seen for the PC samples cyclically loaded at the higher mean stress and lower stress amplitude due to the low crack driving force. Non-linear S - N relationship was detected in the examination of the fatigue properties with changing the mean stress. This is attributed to the different crack growth rate (longer fatigue life): the sample loaded at the high mean stress with lower stress amplitude. Even if the higher stress amplitude, the low fatigue properties are obtained for the sample loaded at the higher mean stress. This was due to the accumulated strain energy to the sample, where severe plastic deformation occurs instead of crack growth (plasticity-induced crack closure). Shear bands and discontinuous crack growth band (DGB) are observed clearly on the fracture surfaces of the sample cyclically loaded at the high stress amplitude, where the lower the ${\sigma}_{mean}$, the narrower the shear band and DGB. On the other hand, final fracture occurred instantly immediately after the short crack growth occurs in the PC sample loaded at the high mean with the low ${\sigma}_{amp}$, i.e., tear fracture, in which the shear bands and DGB are not seen clearly.

  • The mechanical behavior of the polymeric material, HDPE depends on both time and temperature. The study of the tensile behavior at different strain rates is important in engineering design of the orthopedics device such as X-band plate. The mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of HDPE are strongly dependent on the applied strain rate. Generally, the deformation behavior of HDPE based on the stress-strain curve is complex because of the highly inhomogeneous nature of plastic deformation, particularly that of necking. Therefore, we attempted to determine the mechanical behavior of HDPE in this study. Normally, tensile testing under various strain rates of the HDPE has been used to determine the mechanical behavior. We performed tensile tests at various strain rates (1 to 500 %/min) to analyze the viscoelastic behavior on increasing the strain rate. A tensile stress-strain curve was plotted from the data, and the point of transition was marked to calculate the transition stress, strain, and modulus.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the proximal surface contour, size of contact area, and volume difference before and after restoration in artificial teeth of primary molars during proximal composite resin restoration using different matrix systems. Four types of artificial teeth were restored with composite resin using sectional matrix systems-Palodent V3 Sectional Matrix System and myJunior Kitand a circumferential matrix system-Tofflemire Matrix System-and modeled threedimensionally for analysis. When sectional matrix systems were used, there was a higher probability of concave proximal surface contour and simultaneously greater contact area and volume. This is attributed to the dead soft properties of the matrix band used in sectional matrix systems, which can lead to deformation of the band and hence an excessive amount of resin applied around the contact point. Additionally, the rubber wedge in the sectional matrix system may not help the matrix band fit into the cavity. Therefore, based on the findings of this study, morphological aspects need to be carefully considered for proximal composite resin restoration of primary molars using sectional matrix systems.

  • Results from an experimental study on the seismic response of six composite reinforced concrete column-to-steel beam interior joints are presented. The primary variable investigated is the details in the joint. For the basic specimen, the main subassemblies of the beam and column are both continuous, and the steel beam flanges extended to the joint are partly cut off. Transverse beam, steel band plates, cove plates, X shape reinforcement bars and end plates are used in the other five specimens, respectively. After the joint steel panel yielded, two failure modes were observed during the test: local failure in Specimens 1, 2 and 4, shear failure in Specimens 3, 5 and 6. Specimens 6, 3, 5 and 4 have a better strength and deformation capacity than the other two specimens for the effectiveness of their subassemblies. For Specimens 2 and 4, though the performance of strength degradation and stiffness degradation are not as good as the other four specimens, they all have excellent energy dissipation capacity comparing to the RC joint, or the Steel Reinforced Concrete (SRC) joint. Based on the test result, some suggestions are presented for the design of composite RCS joint.

  • This paper describes the state of the art for the development of metallic armor materials which are mainly used as armor plates of the combat vehicles. Several important micro-structural features affecting ballistic properties of the metallic armor are discussed. Optimization of the strength and toughness balance of the metallic armor is necessary for the improvement of the ballistic performance resulting from maximizing the resistance to the penetration of the bullet and also to brittle failure of the plates. Understanding and control of the adiabatic shearing phenomenon developed remarkably during high strain rate deformation is needed to prevent brittle failure of the metallic armor materials.

  • This paper presents a detecting technique for the improvement in quality by appling the various vibrational characteristics theory. The object of this study is to objectively point out faulty gear by developing the program which can be used to analyze and predict the vibrational characteristics caused by gear wear, deformation and nick of auto-transmission. The fault detection methods by vibrational signal analysis of gear have been progressed in the various fields of industry. These methods have the advantage of being easy to attach the accelerometer without discontinuance of the structure. But not all the methods are efficient for finding early faults. So in the thesis, we completed development of the inspection system of vibration by appling the most efficient detecting methods and verified the system's reliability through experiments.
