  • Italian ryegrass (IRG) is one of the fastest growing grasses available to farmers. It offers rapid establishment and starts growing early in the following spring and has fast regrowth after defoliation. So, IRG can be utilized as the dominant/single species of grass used in a farming system, or to play a role as a large producing pasture and sacrificial paddock. The objective of this study was to develop the use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for the evaluation of feed value of IRG. For this study, UAV imagery was taken on the Nonsan regions two times during the IRG growing season. We analyzed the relationships between $NDVI_{UAV}$ and feed value parameters such as fresh matter yield, dry matter yield, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), total digestible nutrient (TDN) and crude protein at the season of harvest. Correlation analysis between $NDVI_{UAV}$ and feed value parameters of IRG revealed that $NDVI_{UAV}$ correlated well with crude protein (r = 0.745), and fresh matter yield (r = 0.655). According to the relationship, the variation of $NDVI_{UAV}$ was significant to interpret feed value parameters of IRG. Eight different regression models such as Linear, Logarithmic, Inverse, Quadratic, Cubic, Power, S, and Exponential model were used to estimate IRG feed value parameters. The S and exponential model provided more accurate results to predict fresh matter yield and crude protein than other models based on coefficient of determination, p- and F-value. The spatial distribution map of feed values in IRG plot was in strong agreement with the field measurements in terms of geographical variation and relative numerical values when $NDVI_{UAV}$ was applied to regression equation. These lead to the result that the characteristics of variations in feed value of IRG according to $NDVI_{UAV}$ were well reflected in the model.

  • In order to examine the relationship of fruit abscission and ethylene evolution in 'Jojuro' and 'Imamuraaki' pear trees, the thinning chemicals, ${\beta}$-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), O, O-dimethyl-O-(3-methyl-4 nitrophenyl) posphorothioate (MEP), 1-naphthyl N-methyl carbamate (carbaryl), and 2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid (ethephon) were applied. Concurrently the effect of calcium acetate on the control of fruit abscission were examined when calcium acetate was added to ethephon and carbaryl. 1. All the applied chemicals (MEP, NAA, carbaryl and ethephon) was effective to abscise fruits in 'Jojuro', and MEP and carbaryl in 'Imamuraaki's. 2. The application of ethephon increased the ethylene evolution but other chemicals did not increase it. 3. There were no significant differences in total sugar contents of fruits by MEP, NAA, carbaryl and ethephon treatments. 4. When the calcium acetate was added to the ethephon and carbaryl, the thinning effects were offsetted. 5. The rate of defoliation due to ethephon treatment was controlled by addition of calcium acetate at 0.1~0.25 M. It was clarified that fruit abscission induced by thinning chemicals except ethephon was not directly related to ethylene production and that degree of fruit thinning can be regulated by addition of calcium acetate to thinning chemicals.

  • Brown leaf spots on leaves of kiwifruit(Actinidia deliciosa) were observed at farmers' orchards in Suncheon and Goheung, Jeonnam Province, Korea in June, 2006. They developed to form dark brown ring spots and severely infected leaves resulted in defoliation during the growing season of kiwifruit. Alternaria sp. was isolated from the diseased leaves repeatedly and was identified as Alternaria alternata on the basis of its mycological characteristics on potato dextrose agar and its pathogenicity was confirmed by wound inoculation on healthy leaves of kiwifruit. A. alternata formed gray to dark sooty gray colony and produced numerous conidia on potato dextrose agar. The conidia, commonly in long chains of 5 or more produced on conidiophores, have $3{\sim}5$ transverse and $1{\sim}2$ longitudinal septa and mostly ovoid or obclavate in shape and were pale brown golden brown in color. The condia were $16.5{\sim}42.1{\times}6.7{\sim}19.5\;{\mu}m$ in size and conidiophores were $8.6{\sim}112.7\;{\mu}m$ in length. This is the first report on the brown ring spot on leaves of kiwifruit caused by A. alternata in Korea.

  • Growth characteristics and adaptability of 10 poplar clones planted at a reclaimed tidal flat were evaluated. The contents of $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ were 10.0, 3.4 and 1.5 times higher, respectively than those of control although the electrical conductivity(EC) in the soil at the test plantation was low as much as 0.51 dS/m. The contents of organic matter(OM) and total nitrogen(TN) in the soil were 22.9 and 23.0 times lower than those of control. Average survival rate of 10 poplar clones showed 88% at three years after planting. Clones Eco28(Populus euramericana), Dorskamp(Populus deltoides ${\times}$ P. nigra) and I-476(Populus euramericana) showed the best survival rate of 100%. However, clones 97-19(Populus deltoides(Lux) ${\times}$ P. deltoides(Harvard)) and Suwon (Populus koreana ${\times}$ P. nigra var. italica) were relatively lower than other clones. Average height and DBH of all clones were 4.8 m and 3.6 cm, respectively. Clone Dorskamp showed the greatest height and DBH, 5.9 m and 5.0 cm, respectively. Clones 97-19 and Dorskamp showed the least defoliation by stress and visible damage by insects and diseases, whereas clones Suwon and I-476 were the most sensitive at the reclaimed tidal flat. Clone Dorskamp showed the best adaptability at the reclaimed tidal flat, but clone Suwon showed the worst based on survival rate, growth, and visible damages.

  • Background: Interspecific ginseng hybrid, Panax ginseng ${\times}$ Panax quenquifolius (Pgq) has vigorous growth and produces larger roots than its parents. However, F1 progenies are complete male sterile. Plant tissue culture technology can circumvent the issue and propagate the hybrid. Methods: Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with different concentrations (0, 2, 4, and 6 mg/L) of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was used for callus induction and somatic embryogenesis (SE). The embryos, after culturing on $GA_3$ supplemented medium, were transferred to hormone free 1/2 Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) medium. The developed taproots with dormant buds were treated with $GA_3$ to break the bud dormancy, and transferred to soil. Hybrid Pgq plants were verified by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) analyses and by LC-IT-TOF-MS. Results: We conducted a comparative study of somatic embryogenesis (SE) in Pgq and its parents, and attempted to establish the soil transfer of in vitro propagated Pgq tap roots. The Pgq explants showed higher rate of embryogenesis (~56% at 2 mg/L 2,4-D concentration) as well as higher number of embryos per explants (~7 at the same 2,4-D concentration) compared to its either parents. The germinated embryos, after culturing on $GA_3$ supplemented medium, were transferred to hormone free 1/2 SH medium to support the continued growth and kept until nutrient depletion induced senescence (NuDIS) of leaf defoliation occurred (4 months). By that time, thickened tap roots with well-developed lateral roots and dormant buds were obtained. All Pgq tap roots pretreated with 20 mg/L $GA_3$ for at least a week produced new shoots after soil transfer. We selected the discriminatory RAPD and ISSR markers to find the interspecific ginseng hybrid among its parents. The $F_1$ hybrid (Pgq) contained species specific 2 ginsenosides (ginsenoside Rf in P. ginseng and pseudoginsenosides $F_{11}$ in P. quinquefolius), and higher amount of other ginsenosides than its parents. Conclusion: Micropropagation of interspecific hybrid ginseng can give an opportunity for continuous production of plants.

  • Outbreaks of Ramulus mikado (Insecta: Phasmatodea: Phasmatidae) in the hilly areas of Mt. Bongsan, Mt. Cheonggye, and elsewhere in Seoul and Gyeonggi occurred from 2020 to 2021, causing serious defoliation. We evaluated the insecticidal effects of six eco-friendly organic materials and the insect-pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae against R. mikado. The fungus was isolated from naturally dead bodies of R. mikado in forest ecosystems. The results revealed that three eco-friendly organic materials containing azadirachtin or geraniol as active ingredients showed high mortality in the range of 85.2%-100%, which were rates similar to that of the chemical insecticide fenitrothion emulsifiable concentrate. All R. mikado adults that were sprayed with a conidial suspension of M. anisopliae at different concentrations were killed within a few days. In conclusion, three eco-friendly organic materials and M. anisopliae could be good alternatives to chemical insecticides.

  • Changes of ethylene production, photosynthesis, respiration and sulfur content of leaves were investigated in some horticultural plants injured by $SO_2$ exposure. Concurrently the effects of $AgNO_3$, succinic acid- 2, 2-dimethylhydrazide (daminozide) and benomyl spray on reduction of $SO_2$ damage in the plants were examined. 1. The amount of ethylene production was significantly different among species of plants and showed higher and earlier peak at 5 ppm $SO_2$ compared with 2.5 ppm $SO_2$ exposure. 2. $AgNO_3$ sprayed on leaves significantly inhibited ethylene production in Cedrus deodara and Forsythia koreana. And it reduced the defoliation of F. koreana occured by $SO_2$ damage. 3. Photosynthetic rate of Helianthus annuus was decreased markedly after 4 -hr exposures to 5 ppm SO, but it was not reduced during exposure to 2.5 ppm $SO_2$. F. koreana showed a little changes in photosynthetic rate after abrupt reduction at the early stage of $SO_2$ exposure regardless of $SO_2$ concentration. 4. The rate of respiration was increased or decreased markedly in propotion to concentration and hours of $SO_2$ exposure compared with control. Daminozide and benomyl showed a little effects on reduction of respiratory changes occured by $SO_2$ damage in C. deodara and H. annuus but there was no effect when $AgNO_3$ was sprayed on C. deodara. 5. Sulfur content of leaves was increased more rapidly at 5 ppm than at 2.5 ppm $SO_2$ exposure. But the injury in 5 ppm $SO_2$ exposure was found out at low sulfur content compared with 2.5 ppm $SO_2$ exposure.

  • BACKGROUND:Kiwifruit growers build their vineyards using many windbreaks to protect their kiwifruit vines from defoliation injury by strong winds such as typhoon. In this study, we have compared fruit quality, budbreak rate and floral bud as affected by windbreaks. And also we surveyed several microclimate indices of kiwifruit orchard depending on the covering materials of arch-type windbreaks. METHODS AND RESULTS: Five different windbreak materials including polyethylene film (PE), blue- and white-colored nets were tested in pipe-framed archtype kiwifruit vineyards as the covering materials. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), annual mean temperature (AMT) and chill unit (CU) as well as fruit quality were compared among the covering materials. In all treatments, annual PAR was more than $400{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, in which kiwifruit leaf could reach its maximum photosynthesis, since the leaves were emerged. Annual mean temperature was greater in 0.1 mm-PE covering as much as $1-2^{\circ}C$ than other windbreaks. In CU calculated by three different models, all windbreaks showed more than 1400 CU that is fully fulfilled CU for kiwifruit rest completion. There were no difference in budbreak rate among the covering materials. Fruit weight was heavier in 0.1 mm-PE and white-net (4 mm) than other windbreaks. CONCLUSION: Regardless of the windbreak materials, the PAR quantity was enough for kiwifruit photosynthesis. And CU for kiwifruit rest completion was fully achieved in all treatments. However, with respect to fruit weight, quantity of PAR, and AMT, etc., It is highly recommended for kiwifruit growers to choose 0.1 mm-PE and white-net (4 mm) as for their windbreaks materials.

  • To study the changes of vegetational composition of each plant successional stage of Pinus densiflora forest caused by pine gall midge damage, Thecodiplosis japonensis, located in Kyonggi-do area, the middle part of Korea, four districts, Anseong, Yongin, Gwangju, and Gapyeong, were selected according to the length of insect damage duration. The forest in the Anseong district was the noninfested one selected as the check. And forests in Yongin, Gwangju, and Gapyeong were the recent]y damaged, severely damaged, and damage prolonged ones in sequence. It was considered that this order could be in concord with the gradual transition of plant successional stage. In view of temperature, precipitation and soil factors, these four districts were sited within the same environment. Four survey plots were selected from each district and the distance between them was 3~4 km. Then again four subplots were set within a plot. Through needle accumulation after insect infestation, light intensity, soil moisture content, and the amount of soil organic matter were increased and these conditions could create a favorable environment enabling the new species invasion and their growth. These were naturally closely related with the increase in quantity of Pinus densiflora defoliation. After considerable time lapse, the quantities of above mentioned factors decreased with the development of the new substitute tree species. It was found that Quercus mongolica was an excellently substitute tree species come first in this studied area. Species diversity increased to a degree at the early stage of the duration of pine gall midge damage and decreased thereafter. As the same manner, similarity index value between plots in the same district decreased to a degree and increased thereafter. This was linked admittedly with the increase and decrease of tree species and evenness. Synthesizing above mentioned results, the process of plant succession studied quantitatively by changes of relative density and relative importance value, it can be concluded that Pinus densiflora forest gives way to Genus Quercus forest in which Genus Lespedeza and Genus Rhododendron species become as subdominance species after removal of the Pinus densiflora trees damaged by pine gall midge.

  • Studies were conducted to determine the combined effect of uniconazole [(E) -1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4, 4-demethyl 2-(1,2,4 triazol-1-yl)-1-penten-3-ol] and silver thiosulfate $[Ag {(S_2O_3)}^3\;_2-]$ (STS) on reduction of ozone injury in tomato plants(Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. 'Pink Glory'). Plants were given a 50ml soil drench of uniconazole at concentrations of 0, 0.001, 0.01 and 0.1 mg/pot at the stage of emerging 4th leaf. Two days prior to ozone fumigation, STS solution contained 0.05% Tween-20 was also sprayed at concentrations of 0, 0.3 and 0.6 mM. Uniconazole at 0.01 mg/pot and STS at 0.6 mM were effective in providing protection against ozone exposure(20h at 0.2ppm) without severe retardation of plant height and chemical phytotoxicity, respectively. Combined treatment with uniconazole, STS significantly reduced ozone injury at the lower concentration than a single treatment with uniconazole or STS. Uniconazole treatment reduced plant height, stem elongation and transpiration rate on a whole plant level and increased chlorophyll concentration. STS did not give any effect on plant growth and chlorophyll content but increased transpiration rate in non-ozone-fumigated plants. Ethylene production in the leaves of ozone-fumigated plants was decreased by uniconazole and STS pretreatment, but there was no protective effect on epinasty of leaves in uniconazole-treated plants. STS increased ethylene production in non-ozone-fumigated plants, but it significantly reduced the degree of epinasty and defoliation of cotyledons when plants were exposed to ozone. Uniconazole slightly increased superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities. But STS showed little or no effects on such free radical scavengers. Day of flowering after seeding was shortened and percentages of fruit set were increased by uniconazole treatment. STS was highly effective on protecting reduction of fruit set resulting from ozone fumigation. These results suggest that combined use of uniconazole and STS should provide miximum protection against ozone injury without growth retardation resulting in yield loss.
