It is not easy to correctly predict deflections of reinforced concrete beams and one-way slabs due to the variability of parameters involved in the calculation of deflections. Monte Carlo simulation is used to assess the variability of deflections with known statistical data and probability distributions of variables. A deterministic deflection value is obtained using the layered beam model based on the finite element approach in which a finite element is divided into a number of layers over the depth. The model takes into account nonlinear effects such as cracking, creep and shrinkage. Statistical parameters were obtained from the literature. For the assessment of variability of deflections, 12 cases of one-way slabs and T-beams are designed on the basis of ultimate moment capacity. Several results of a probabilistic study are presented to indicate general trends indicated by results and demonstrate the effect of certain design parameters on the variability of deflections. From simulation results, the variability of deflections relies primarily on the ratio of applied moment to cracking moment and the corre-sponding reinforcement ratio.

This paper proposes an approach to detect unintended deflections in an automotive outer panel. Conventionally, the detection of unintended deflections has been performed by experienced works, and it requires much amount of time and efforts. The motivation of this work is to reduce such efforts by providing an automated detection methodology. For the detection of unintended deflections, we make use of the measured data from an optical scanner which can be considered as a Z-map data. The proposed approach consists of four major steps; 1) measured data acquisition for an automotive outer panel, 2) identification of shape features, 3) removal of shape features, and 4) detection of unintended deflections via curvature analysis.
The use of composite beams with partial interaction, with less shear connectors than those required for full interaction, may be advantageous in many situations. However, these beams tend to show higher deflections compared to beams with full interaction, and codified expressions for the calculation of such deflections are not fully developed and validated. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive numerical study on the deflections of steel-concrete composite beams with partial interaction. Efficient numerical models of full-scale composite beams considering material nonlinearities and contact between their parts have been developed by means of the advanced software ABAQUS, including a damage model to simulate the concrete slab. The FE models were validated against experimental results, and subsequently parametric studies were developed to investigate the influence of the shear connection degree and the coefficient of friction in the deflection of composite beams. The comparison of predicted deflections using reference codes (AISC, Eurocode-4 and AS-2327.1) against numerical results showed that there are still inaccuracies in the estimation of deflections for the verification of the serviceability limit state, according to some of the analyzed codes.

The RC flat plate system has benefits such as a short construction time, an improvement of workability and a floor height reduction. In the case of long span slab, cracking damages and large deflections tend to occur due to the low flexural stiffness of flat plates. Specially, over-loading by self-weight of slab during construction increases short and long-term deflections. These problems may be solved by the use of void slab that has benefits of the reduced self-weight. In this study, to analyze an effect of self-weight reduction of void slab on slab deflections, the parametric study is performed. Including variable conditions such as a concrete strength, a slab construction cycle, the number of shored floors, a compressive reinforcement ratio and a tensile reinforcement ratio, slab construction loads and deflections are calculated by considering the construction stages, concrete cracking, and long-term effects. The short-term deflections during construction and the long-term deflections after construction of both of normal and void slabs are compared and the effects of void slab on the reduction of slab deflections are analyzed.
RC flat plates that have no flexural stiffness by boundary beams may be governed by a serviceability as well as a strength condition. A construction sequence and its impact on the distributions of construction loads among slabs tied by shores are decisive factors influencing immediate and long term performances of flat plate. Over-loading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the deflection of a flat plate system under construction. A reshoring work may be helpful in reducing slab deflections by controlling the vertical distributions of construction loads in a multi-shored flat plate system. In this study, a change of construction loads by reshoring works and its effects on deflections of flat plate systems under construction are analyzed. The slab construction loads with various reshoring schemes are defined by a simplified method, and the practical calculation of slab deflections with considering construction sequences and concrete cracking effects is applied. From parametric studies, the reshoring works are verified to reduce construction loads and slab deflections.
Deflections of jointed concrete pavements at test road are monitored during 48 hours. And methods of calibration with respect to curling deflections are suggested. Relations between deflection ratio of center to joint at test time and deflection ratio of center at test time to center at reference time are described by regression. From deflections at test time, deflections transformed to reference time which gives minimum deflections in a day are estimated through regression curves and concluded to propose as a alternative method of curling calibration with more data accumulation.
The structural designs of RC flat plates that have no flexural stiffness by boundary beams may be governed not by strength conditions but by serviceabilities. Specially, since over-loading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the short- and long-term deflections of a flat plate system, a construction sequence and its impact on the slab deflections may be decisive factors in designs of flat plate systems. In this study, the procedure of simulating slab deflections with considering construction sequences, concrete cracking, and long-term effects is proposed. The proposed method is practically useful, as it can predict well the slab deflections at construction and service stages only with a few input data. The proposed method is verified by comparisons with measured results in a real-scale test.

Surface deflections have a great effect on the external appearance of automobiles. Usually, they are occurred on large flat panels containing sudden shape changes and of very small size about $\pm$30$\sim$300$\mu$m. Since the current numerical method is not sufficient for predicting these defects, the correction of these defects still depends on trial and error, which requires a great deal of time and expense. Consequently, developing the numerical method to predict and prevent these defects is very important far improving cosmetic surface qualities. In this study, an evaluation system that can analyze surface deflections using numerical simulation and a visualization system are reported. To calculate the surface deflections numerically, robust algorithms and simulation methodologies are suggested and to visualize them quantitatively, the curvature variation algorithm is proposed. To verify the developed systems, the experimental die of the handle portion of exterior door is analyzed. The results showed that the experimental and simulational visualization are in good agreement. Compensation methods to correct the surface deflections are also tested. The evaluation system proposed in this paper could be used to predict and minimize the occurrence of surface deflections in die manufacturing.

This paper analyzes the influence of the construction process on short- and long-term deflections on a reinforced concrete structure poured on-site by a portable industrialized system. A parametric analysis was carried out by the Finite Elements Method (FEM) that considered: a) type of construction process with reshoring or clearing (partial striking); b) the number of successively shored floors and c) the number of shores used on each floor. All three factors were especially important for the values of short- and long-term deflections, which were highest in the reshoring processes with the lowest number of successively shored floors and the lowest number of shores per floor. Deflections obtained were compared with the limits laid down by ACI 318-14 and as calculated by this code's simplified method. The long-term deflections were seen to be almost double than those obtained by applying the ACI 318-14 code's simplified method and in some cases these deflections were above the established limits. It can thus be concluded that the load history of a building under construction should be taken into account in order to satisfy a structure's in-service conditions and durability.
This study explores the lateral deflections of diagonal braces in concentrically-braced earthquake-resisting frames. The performance of this widely-used system is often compromised by the flexural buckling of slender braces in compression. In addition to reducing the compressive resistance, buckling may also cause these members to undergo sizeable lateral deflections which could damage surrounding structural components. Different approaches have been used in the past to predict the mid-length lateral deflections of cyclically loaded steel braces based on their theoretical deformed geometry or by using experimental data. Expressions have been proposed relating the mid-length lateral deflection to the axial displacement ductility of the member. Recent experiments were conducted on hollow and concrete-filled circular hollow section (CHS) braces of different lengths under cyclic loading. Very slender, concrete-filled tubular braces exhibited a highly ductile response, undergoing large axial displacements prior to failure. The presence of concrete infill did not influence the magnitude of lateral deflection in relation to the axial displacement, but did increase the number of cycles endured and the maximum axial displacement achieved. The corresponding lateral deflections exceeded the deflections observed in the majority of the previous experiments that were considered. Consequently, predictive expressions from previous research did not accurately predict the mid-height lateral deflections of these CHS members. Mid-length lateral deflections were found to be influenced by the member non-dimensional slenderness (${\bar{\lambda}}$) and hence a new expression was proposed for the lateral deflection in terms of member slenderness and axial displacement ductility.
