`과학적 소양'의 정의를 향하여 (Toward to the Definition of 'Scientific Literacy')

  • Since the term, 'scientific literacy' was introduced by P. D. Hurd in 1958, it has been used as a term, representing major goals in science education. In Korea, the term 'scientific literacy' was used in the statement of the summative objective of the 2007 science reformed curriculum. But in various educational contexts m which teachers and researchers works, the definition of the term has not been used consistently. This phenomena would be interpreted as showing limits of the term describing the goals of science education. This study examined the historical change in the meaning of the term in purpose of trying to anchor the definition. In this study, the changing period was divided into before introducing the term and after. The after era was divided into the period of confusing and anchoring in the meaning, and the period of expanding the meaning. Especially, after science as intellectual ability was conceptualized in science education communities, the meaning of scientific literacy was partially confused. In current time, as the concepts of language in cognitive science influenced the use of language in science education, the trends of expending the meaning of scientific literacy has been grasped in science education community.

과학과 교과서에 나타난 열과 열에너지 용어의 정의 및 사용 의미 분석 (An Analysis of the Definition and the Meaning Used for the Terms of Heat and Thermal Energy in the Science Textbooks)

  • 본 연구에서는 우리나라 과학과 교과서에서 열과 열에너지 용어를 어떻게 정의하고 어떤 의미로 사용하고 있는지, 그리고 과학의 영역별로 이 용어들의 사용 의미에 차이가 있는지 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2009 개정 교육과정에 의한 초 중 고 과학과 교과서 52권의 내용을 분석하였다. 열 용어의 정의는 중학교 과학(1)과 고등학교 물리 I, II 교과서에서 제시되는데, 대부분의 교과서가 열을 "온도 차이에 의해 이동하는 에너지(유형 I)"로 정의하였고 물리 I 교과서 1종에서만 "온도 차이에 의한 에너지의 이동(유형 II)"으로 정의하였다. 열에너지 용어의 정의는 대체로 중학교 과학(2)와 고등학교 물리 I 교과서에 제시되는데, 물리 I 교과서는 "분자 운동 에너지(유형 III)"로 정의하였지만 과학(2) 교과서에서는 유형 I 또는 "물체의 상태나 온도를 변화시키는 에너지(유형 IV)"로 정의하였다. 교과서 본문 서술에서 열 용어는 주로 유형 I 또는 유형 III의 의미로 사용되었고, 열에너지 용어는 주로 유형 III의 의미로 사용되었으나 고등학교 물리와 화학 교과서에서는 유형 I의 의미로 사용되기도 하여 열과 열에너지 용어를 혼용하고 있었다. 과학의 영역별로 보면 열과 열에너지 용어를 물리와 화학에서는 주로 유형 I과 유형 III의 의미로 사용하였고, 생명과학과 지구과학에서는 주로 유형 III의 의미로 사용하여 영역별로 차이가 있었다.

  • To give any science or discipline an assured status, the most important and fundamental thing is to establish the method of research. 'Bibliography' is an ambiguous and much-abused term in any area, oriental, anglo-american, or latin countries. This study is a little essay to examine the different theories of these three areas and to synthesize the common factors. It is devised three parts : the definition of the term itself and the transition of its concept, the introduction of each theory, and a proposition of methodology based on these theories. In all, bibliography is commonly understood to mean (i) a list of books and other graphic materials arranged according to some system, (ii) the study of books as material objects include historical and textual problems, (iii) as a science of books, the systematic study of all conditions of its production, diffusion, and utilisation, including the study of factors of explication of phenomenon, on the political, economical, technical, social and culturel plans.

Fuzzy Relaxation Based on the Theory of Possibility and FAM

  • This paper presents a fuzzy relaxation algorithm, which is based on the possibility and FAM instead of he probability and compatibility coefficients used in most of existing probabilistic relaxation algorithms, Because of eliminating stages for estimating of compatibility coefficients and normalization of the probability estimates, the proposed fuzzy relaxation algorithms increases the parallelism and has a simple iteration scheme. The construction of fuzzy relaxation scheme consists of the following three tasks: (1) definition of in/output linguistic variables, their term sets, and possibility. (2) Definition of FAM rule bases for relaxation using fuzzy compound relations. (3) Construction of the iteration scheme for calculating the new possibility estimate. Applications to region segmentation an ege detectiojn algorithms show that he proposed method can be used for not only reducing the image ambiguity and segmentation errors, but also enhancing the raw edge iteratively.

"표준국어대사전"을 이용한 시소러스 구축 (Construction of Thesaurus Using "The Korean Standard Dictionary")

  • 시소러스 작성에 있어서 가장 현실적인 어려움은 용어의 수집에 있다. 용어사전 뿐만 아니라 어휘사전도 시소러스의 중요한 용어 수집원으로 사용될 수 있다. "표준국어대사전"은 어문 규정을 충실히 반영한 우리나라의 대표사전이다. 또한 "표준국어대사전"은 단순히 표제어에 대한 용어 정의뿐만 아니라 해당 용어에 대한 다양한 정보를 체계적으로 담고 있기 때문에, 이를 시소러스 사전 구축에 활용할 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 "표준국어대사전"이 갖고 있는 다양한 용어관계 정보를 시소러스 용어관계로 정의하는 방안을 모색하였다. 또한 용어의 분리, 동등관계와 계층관계의 설정, 한정어의 사용, 북한어 관계 등 시소러스 구축에서의 문제점과 해결 방안을 제시한다.

Identification of Niche Conditions Supporting Short-term Culture of Spermatogonial Stem Cells Derived from Porcine Neonatal Testis

  • Despite that porcine spermatogonial stem cells (pSSCs) have been regarded as a practical tool for preserving eternally genetic backgrounds derived from pigs with high performance in the economic traits or phenotypes of specific human diseases, there were no reports about precise definition of niche conditions promoting proliferation and maintenance of pSSCs. Accordingly, we tried to determine niche conditions supporting proliferation and maintenance of undifferentiated pSSCs for short-term. For these, undifferentiated pSSCs were progressively cultured in different composition of culture medium, seeding density of pSSCs, type of feeder cells and concentration of growth factors, and then total number of and alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity of pSSCs were investigated at post-6 day culture. As the results, the culture of $4{\times}10^5$ pSSCs on mitotically in activated $2{\times}10^5$ STO cells in the mouse embryonic stem cell culture medium (mESCCM) supplemented with 30 ng/ml glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) was identified as the best niche condition supporting effectively the short-term maintenance of undifferentiated pSSCs. Moreover, the optimized short-term culture system will be a basis for developing long-term culture system of pSSCs in the following researches.

용해, 확산, 분출의 정의와 교과서 서술에 대한 재고찰 (Revisiting the Definitions and the Textbook Descriptions of Dissolution, Diffusion and Effusion)

  • 선행연구에 의하면 많은 중 고등학교 학생들과 교사들이 용해와 확산, 확산과 분출을 잘 구분하지 못한다고 하므로 본 연구에서는 이 용어들의 정의로부터 각 개념들을 서로 구분하는 것이 가능한지 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 현재 과학자들이 합의하고 있는 것으로 생각되는 용어의 정의를 IUPAC의 Gold Book과 대학 물리화학 교재로부터 조사하여 비교하였다. 그리고 현행 중 고등학교 교과서 및 대학 일반화학 교재에 서술된 정의를 조사하여 학생들과 교사들이 혼란을 느낄 수 있는 문제점을 파악하고 그 개선점을 알아보고자 하였다. 그 결과 용해는 두 상이 혼합되어 하나의 상이 되는 것임에 비해 확산은 농도 차를 없애는 방향으로 물질이 이동하는 것이므로 서로 구분 가능하다고 생각된다. 그러나 중.고등학교 교과서와 대학 일반화학 교재에서도 대부분 확산을 농도 차에 의한 것으로 명확하게 서술하지 않았는데 이 1022 박종윤를 강조해서 서술할 필요가 있다. 분출은 용기 벽면의 아주 작은 구멍을 통해 기체 입자가 충돌 없이 빠져나가는 것이므로 기체 확산과 분명히 구분되지만 고등학교 교과서에서 분출의 정의를 제시한 교과서는 거의 없었다.

초등학교 과학 교과서에 제시된 용어 유형 분석 (An analysis of terms presented in Elementary school science textbooks)

  • This study was carried out to analyze terms in primary science textbooks. The results of the research are as follows. 1. The higher-grade science textbooks use more types of categories and less definitions for terms. Only 14% of definitions for terms are showed in textbooks, and no more than 0.4~0.6 definitions shows the shortage of definitions for terms in one class content. 2. The definitions by contract, which forms 68%, was the highest in elementary science textbooks. And the dictionary definitions, which are 62%, was the highest in experiment-observation textbooks. 3. The most used type of definitions is the way which is used for a case or a indicating methods, and its rate is increasing steadily. And its rate was 76% of the whole of terms. 4. Terms used in energy field are few as compared with terms of other fields. Each field has completely different ways of defining terms and presenting content in textbooks to other fields.

Can Definitions Contribute to Alternative Conceptions?: A Meta-Study Approach

  • There has been disagreement on the importance of definitions in science education. Yager (1983) believes that one crisis in science education was due to the considerable emphasis upon the learning of definitions. Hobson (2004) disagrees with physics textbooks that do not provide general definition on energy. Some textbooks explain that "there is no completely satisfactory definition of energy" or they can only "struggle to define it." In general, imprecise definitions in textbooks (Bauman, 1992) and inaccuracies in definition provided by teachers (Galili & Lehavi, 2006) may cause alternative conceptions. Besides, there are at least four challenges in defining physical concepts: precision, circularity, context and completeness in knowledge. These definitional problems that have been discussed in The Feynman Lectures, may impede the learning of physical concepts. A meta-study approach is employed to examine about five hundreds journal papers that may discuss definitions in physics, problems in defining physical concepts and how they may result in alternative conceptions. These journal papers are mainly selected from journals such as American Journal of Physics, International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Physics Education, The Physics Teachers, and so on. There are also comparisons of definitions with definitions from textbooks, Dictionaries of Physics, and English Dictionaries. To understand the nature of alternative conception, Lee et al. (2010) have suggested a theoretical framework to describe the learning issues by synthesizing cognitive psychology and science education approaches. Taking it a step further, this study incorporates the challenges in semantics and epistemology, proposes that there are at least four variants of alternative conceptions. We may coin the term, 'alternative definitions', to refer to the commonly available definitions, which have these four problems in defining physics concepts. Based on this study, alternative definitions may result in at least four variants of alternative conceptions. Note that these four definitional problems or challenges in definitions cannot be easily resolved. Educators should be cognizant of the four variants of alternative conceptions which can arise from alternative definitions. The concepts of alternative definitions can be useful and possibly generalized to science education and beyond.

견실한 시스템 아키텍쳐 개발 지침 (A Development Guide for Robust System Architecting)

  • The term system architecting(SA) is widely used in systems engineering area, however the explicit meaning of the term varies considerably from person to person depending on his expertise and viewpoints. In this paper, we surveyed the range of variations in definitions and present the summary. Additionally, the definition of robust system architecting is suggested along with the associated system architecture guides that can be followed during an architecture development. This guide exposes various viewpoints of architecture such as art side, requirement specification, system view, principles, tools and environment.
