  • Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons within the substantia nigra pars compacta. In the present study, we investigated whether ${\beta}-Lapachone$ (${\beta}-LAP$), a natural naphthoquinone compound isolated from the lapacho tree (Tabebuia avellanedae), elicits neuroprotective effects in a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced Parkinson's disease mouse model. ${\beta}-LAP$ reduced the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunoreactive fiber loss induced by MPTP in the dorsolateral striatum, and alleviated motor dysfunction as determined by the rotarod test. In addition, ${\beta}-LAP$ protected against MPTP-induced loss of TH positive neurons, and upregulated B-cell lymphoma 2 protein (Bcl-2) expression in the substantia nigra. Based on previous reports on the neuroprotective role of nuclear factor-E2-related factor-2 (Nrf2) in neurodegenerative diseases, we investigated whether ${\beta}-LAP$ induces upregulation of the Nrf2-hemeoxygenae-1 (HO-1) signaling pathway molecules in MPTP-injected mouse brains. Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses indicated that ${\beta}-LAP$ increased HO-1 expression in glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive astrocytes. Moreover, ${\beta}-LAP$ increased the nuclear translocation and DNA binding activity of Nrf2, and the phosphorylation of upstream adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK). ${\beta}-LAP$ also increased the localization of p-AMPK and Nrf2 in astrocytes. Collectively, our data suggest that ${\beta}-LAP$ exerts neuroprotective effect in MPTP-injected mice by upregulating the p-AMPK/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathways in astrocytes.

  • This paper analyzes the limitations and provides alternative options for Korean Military LISI model, which is based on interoperability assessment model, LISI(Level of Information System Interoperability), developed for US defense information systems and reformed to suit the Korean Military environment by ADD. Korean Military's LIST model is applied to all systems(information system, weapon systems, non-weapon systems)' interoperability assessment defined in acquisition regulations by Joint Interoperability Test Center, a subordinate unit of Defense Command and Control Forces and the only assessment agency of defense interoperability. LISI was basically developed as an assessment model for information system's interoperability, but due to it's shortfall in assessing complex systems including information systems, weapon and non-weapon systems required from New environment SOSI(System of Systems Interoperability) has recently been researched and developed. On the other hand, it is inevitable that Korean Military's LISI model face fundamental limitations as an interoperability assessment tool for Defense Information System as well as for weapon and non-weapon systems, since it was benchmarked and reformed from the US LISI model. In order to overcome such limitations, MND and associated agencies are providing improvement methods through studies. This paper will provide LISI capability model's assessment criteria on Application(P), Infrastructure(I), Data(D), restraints of on comparison assessment process of unit systems evaluated and politic alternatives to overcome the restraints.

  • A procedure is established for combining a regression model and a time series model to fit to a set of autocorrelated data. This procedure is based on an iterative method to compute regression parameter estimates and time series parameter estimates simultaneously. The time series model which is discussed is basically AR(p) model, since MA(q) model or ARMA(p,q) model can be inverted to AR({$\infty$) model which can be approximated by AR(p) model. The procedure discussed in this articled is applied in general to any combination of regression model and time series model.

  • Modelling the energy release performance of energetic material combustion in closed systems is of fundamental importance for aerospace and defense application. In particular, to compensate for the disadvantage of the combustion of single energetic material and maximize the benefits, a method of combusting the mixed energetic materials is used. However, since complicated heat transfer occurs when the energetic material is combusted, it is difficult to theoretically predict the combustion performance. Here, we suggest a theoretical model to estimate the energy release performance of mixed energetic material based on the model for the combustion performance of single energetic material. To confirm the effect of parameters on the model, and to gain insights into the combustion characteristics of the energetic material, we studied parameter analysis on the reaction temperature and the characteristic time scales of energy generation and loss. To validate the model, model predictions for mixed energetic materials are compared to experimental results depending on the amount and type of energetic material. The comparison showed little difference in maximum pressure and the reliability of the model was validated. Finally, we hope that the suggested model can predict the energy release performance of single or mixed energetic material for various types of materials, as well as the energetic materials used for validation.

  • A prediction model is proposed for a blast load acting on a column component because of an external explosion. The model can predict the pressure-time histories acting on a column using the fitting curves established from a database composed of finite-element (FE) analysis results. To this end, 70 numerical simulations using the commercial software AUTODYN were performed by changing the column width. To confirm the performance of the proposed model, pressure-time histories estimated from an existing empirical formula and the proposed model were compared based on the FE analysis results. It was verified that the proposed model can more precisely predict the pressure-time histories compared with the existing model.

  • An accurate estimation of the geotechnical parameters in front of tunnel faces is crucial for the safe construction of underground infrastructure using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). This study was aimed at developing a data-driven model for predicting the rock quality designation (RQD) of the ground formation ahead of tunnel faces. The dataset used for the machine learning (ML) model comprises seven geological and mechanical features and 564 RQD values, obtained from an earth pressure balance (EPB) shield TBM tunneling project beneath the Han River in the Republic of Korea. Four ML algorithms were employed in developing the RQD prediction model: k-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGB). The grid search and five-fold cross-validation techniques were applied to optimize the prediction performance of the developed model by identifying the optimal hyperparameter combinations. The prediction results revealed that the RF algorithm-based model exhibited superior performance, achieving a root mean square error of 7.38% and coefficient of determination of 0.81. In addition, the Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) approach was adopted to determine the most relevant features, thereby enhancing the interpretability and reliability of the developed model with the RF algorithm. It was concluded that the developed model can successfully predict the RQD of the ground formation ahead of tunnel faces, contributing to safe and efficient tunnel excavation.

  • Supercritical water oxidation of DMMP using continuous flow reactor was studied at temperature ranging from 440 to $540^{\circ}C$ and a fixed pressure of 242 bar. The range of residence times in the reactor was from 10 to 26 s, and oxygen excess value varied from -40 to 200%. Destruction efficiencies (DE) of DMMP were greater than 99.7% at $540^{\circ}C$, and increased as the DMMP concentrations were increased. DE of DMMP were significantly affected by oxygen concentration under stoichiometric amount, but showed little difference over stoichiometric amount. On the basis of 30 data with conversions greater than 85%, kinetic correlations for the DE of DMMP were developed. The pre-exponential factor was $(1.10{\pm}0.76){\times}10^6$, and the activation energy was $90.66{\pm}3.87kJ/mol$, and the reaction orders for DMMP and oxygen were $1.02{\pm}0.03$, $0.32{\pm}0.03$, respectively. The model predictions agreed well with the experimental data.

  • As the number of enlistees decreases due to social changes like declining birth rates, it is necessary to conduct research on the appropriate recalculation of the force that considers the future defense sufficiency and sustainability of the Army. However, existing research has primarily focused on qualitative studies based on comprehensive evaluations and expert opinions, lacking consideration of sustained support activities. Due to these limitations, there is a high possibility of differing opinions depending on perspectives and changes over time. In this study, we propose a quantitative method to calculate the proper personnel by applying system dynamics. For this purpose, we consider a standing army that can ensure the sufficiency of defense between battles over time as an adequate force and use battle damage calculated by wargame simulation as input data. The output data is the number of troops required to support activities, taking into account maintenance time, complexity, and difficulty. This study is the first quantitative attempt to calculate the appropriate standing army to keep the defense sufficiency of the ROK Army in 2040, and it is expected to serve as a cornerstone for adding logical and rational diversity to the qualitative force calculation studies that have been conducted so far.
