This paper present a study on the application of sound pressure and vibration signals to detect the presence of defects in a rolling element bearing using a statistical analysis method. The well established statistical parameters such as the crest factor and the distribution of moments including kurtosis and skewless are utilized in this study. In addition, other statistical parameters derived from the beta distribution function are also used. A comparison study on the performance of the different types of parameter used is also performed. The statistical analysis is used because of its simplicity and quick computation. Under ideal conditions, the statistical method can be used to identify the different types of defect present in the bearing. In addition, the results also reveal that there is no significant advantages in using the beta function parameters when compared to using kurtosis and the crest factor for detecting and identifying defects in rolling element bearings from both sound and vibration signals.
A finite element method was used to simulate the wave propagation of laser-generated ultrasound and its interaction with surface breaking cracks in an elastic material. Thermoelastic laser line source on the material surface was approximated as a shear dipole and loaded as nodal forces in the plane-strain finite element (FE) model. The shear dipole- FE model was tested for the generation of ultrasound on the surface with no defect. The model was found to generate the Rayleigh surface wave. The model was then extended to examine the interaction of laser generated ultrasound with surface-breaking cracks of various depths. The crack-scattered waves were monitored to size the crack depth. The proposed model clearly reproduced the experimentally observed features that can be used to characterize the presence of surface-breaking cracks.
In this paper, the modification of double projection method for the adaptive analysis of Element-free Galerkin(EFG) method were proposed. As results of the double projection method, the smoothed error profile that is adequate for adaptive analysis was obtained by re-projection of error that means the differences of EFG stress and projected stress. However, it was found that the efficiency of double projection method is degraded as increase of the numerical integration order. Since, the iterative refinement to single step error estimation made the same effect as increasing of integration order, the application of the iterative refinement base on double projection method could be produced the inadequately refined analysis model. To overcome this defect, a modified scheme of double projection were proposed. In the numerical example, the results did not show degradation of double projection effect in iterative refinement and the efficiency of proposed scheme were proved.
Recently, the roll forming process is one of the most widely used processes for manufacturing automotive part. In this study, flower patterns of roll forming process were designed to manufacture an ultra high strength bumper beam using the finite element analysis. Three types of flower patterns such as the basic type, the rotation type and the split type were designed based on the constant arc length forming method using the design software, UBECO Profil. Finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the suitability of designed flower patterns in terms of the longitudinal strain and the bow defect. The analytical results show that the split type represents more uniform longitudinal strain distributions and a good dimensional accuracy than other types of flower patterns.
The compression behavior of semi-solid materials in studied from a viewpoint of yield criteria and analysis methods. To describe the behavior of materials in semi-solid state, several theories have been proposed by extending the concept of plasticity of porous compressible materials. in the present work, the upper-bound method and the finite element method are used to model the simple compression process using yield criteria of Kuhn and Doraivelu. Segregation between solid and liquid which cause defect of product is analysed for Sn-15%Pb alloy is compared with the experimental result of Charreyron et al..
Infrared thermography is an emerging approach to non-contact, non-intrusive, and non-destructive inspection of various solid materials such as metals, composites, and semiconductors for industrial and research interests. In this study, data processing was applied to infrared thermography measurements to detect defects in metals that were widely used in industrial fields. When analyzing experimental data from infrared thermographic testing, raw images were often not appropriate. Thus, various data analysis methods were used at the pre-processing and processing levels in data processing programs for quantitative analysis of defect detection and characterization; these increased the infrared non-destructive testing capabilities since subtle defects signature became apparent. A 3D finite element simulation was performed to verify and analyze the data obtained from both the experiment and the image processing techniques.
Material flaws in the from of pre-existing defects can severely affect the crack initiation. Stress distribution and crack initiation life of engineering materials such as monolithic aluminum alloy and Al/Glass fiber laminate may be different according to the defect location. The aim of this study is to evaluate effects of relative location of defects around the circular hole in monolithic aluminum and Al/Glass fiber laminates under cyclic bending moment. Stress distribution and crack initiation behavior near a circular hole are considered. Results of Finite Element (FE) model indicated the features of different stress field due to the relative defects positions. Especially, the defects positions at ${\theta}=0^{\circ}\;and\;{\theta}=30^{\circ}$ was strongly effective in stress concentration factor ($K_t$) and crack initiation behavior.
In decades, a substantial body of work on a unified viscoplastic model which considers the mechanism of plastic deformation and creep deformation has developed. The systematic scheme for numerical analysis of unified model is necessary because the dominant failure mechanism is the defect growth and coalescence in materials. In the present study, the unified viscoplastic model for materials with defects suggested by Suquet and Michel was employed for numerical analysis. The constitutive equations are integrated based on the generalized mid-point rule and implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) by means of user-defined subroutine (UMAT). To evaluate the validity of the developed UMAT code and the assessment of the adopted viscoplastic model, the results obtained from the UMAT code was compared with the numerical reference solution and experimental data. The unit cell analysis also has been investigated to study the effect of strain rate, temperature, stress triaxiality and initial defect volume fraction on the growth and coalescence of the defect.
The hub hole is usually formed with a stretch flanging process followed by a blanking process of a hole. Since the hole is made by blanking, the blanked surface is so rough that the formability in the region is rather poor. The emerging task is to identify the formability of the blanked region in the forming simulation and to relate the criterion to the real forming process by experiments. In this paper, the blanked region of a hole surface is modeled by a defected-edge finite element for stretch flanging simulation. The analysis deals with the level of defect in the blanked region in order to identify the formability in the real process. The analysis provides the formability depending on the level of defect and seeks the way to match the level of defect to that of the real surface. The approach makes the analysis possible to deal with the formability of the high strength steel and predict the fracture at the hole surface during the stretch flanging simulation.
In the examination of steam generator(SG) tube in nuclear power plant, eddy current testing probes play an important role in detecting the defects. Bobbin probe and MRPC probe is usually used for the inspection of SG tube. Bobbin probe is good at high speed inspection, but ability of detection of circumferential defect is very weak. On the contrary MRPC probe, which moves for inspection in the direction of axial and circumferential simultaneously, has very slow inspection speed, but it has excellent detection capability for small cracks, which is hardly detected by bobbin probe. In this paper, for the accurate analysis of experimental ECT signals, construction of MRPC probe signals database according to the variation of defect size is the main purpose. Using 3-D finite element method, ECT signals are analyzed, and signals analysis add according to frequency ingredient. The results, which are analysis and characteristics ion of electromagnetism simulation signals, is databased.
