For checking influence of load-position and system of stress-transmission in precast concrete bridge deck system, the test composite bridge was made a experiment by the wheel load machine. The result of experiment was the loop joint system of the precast decks has a difference which was the transmission system of longitudinal stress, comparing with general RC bridge deck system. The loop joint system has a behavior independently.
The Half-depth precast deck is a structural system that utilizes pre-cast panels pre-built at the factory as formwork at the construction stage and as a major structural member at the same time after completion. These systems have joints between segments, and the detail and performance of the joints are factors that have a very large impact on the quality, such as the constructability and durability of the bridge decks. In this study, strength performance evaluation was performed for improved joints using connecting rebar by experimental method. Static loading tests were conducted on the test specimen with improved joint, those with existing joint and those without joint. The test results of the specimens were compared to each other, and the flexural strength required by the design was compared. The flexural strength required in the design was presented by finite element analysis. It has been shown that the flexural strength of the specimens with joints were more than twice that required by the design. But the flexural strength of the specimen with existing joint was about 84% of that without joint. The flexural strength of the specimen with improved joints was a nearly similar degree of that compared to the specimen without joint. And a comparison of the moment-deflection relationship curves of the two specimens also shows a very similar flexural behavior. It is confirmed that improved joint has sufficient flexural strength. In addition to strength, the bridge decks require serviceability, such as deflection and cracking, and in particular, fatigue resistance due to repetitive live loads is an important performance factor. Therefore, further verification studies are required.
Precast deck joints have larger crack width than cast-in-place concrete decks. The initial crack typically occurs at the maximum moment but cracks on precast joints are significant and lead to failure of the deck. The present crack equation is applied to cast-in-place decks, and requires correction to calculate the crack width of precast deck joints. This research aims to study the crack width correction equation of precast decks by performing static tests using high strength and normal strength concrete. Based on experimental results, the bending strength of the structural connections of the current precast deck is satisfied. However it is not suitable to calculate and control the crack width of precast loop connections using the current design equation. A crack width calculation equation is proposed for crack control of precast deck loop joints. Also included in this paper are recommendations to improve the crack control of loop connections.
In order to apply a precast deck to continuous composite bridges, several experiments and analytical studies were performed. Design criterion for crack prevention should be such that it does not permit tension at the joint to occur when the service loads are applied. Details of the shear pocket for studs and material properties of filler in the pocket and the joint are very important considerations in design and construction. Combination of longitudinal prestressing methods, internal tendon and prestressing after shear connection, should be used for prevention of cracking in continuous precast deck bridges. Design guides for the determination of prestressing force are suggested.
For checking fatigue safety and endurance of precast concrete deck and loop joint system in the steel plate girder composite bridge, the test composite bridge model was made for the fatigue experiment by the wheel load machine. The fatigue tests of 1,000,000 cycles were implemented according to wheel load condition of DB24 rear axle of Korea Highway Design Code. From the test results, the loop joint system for the precast deck has a sufficient flexural capacity. Although a little lower longitudinal continuity capacity is evaluated than general sound cast-in-place RC bridge deck, there is no problem about the safety. The overall fatigue level of safety defined by the code is satisfied.
Flexural stiffness of bridge spans has become even more important parameter since Eurocode 1 introduced for railway bridges the serviceability limit state of resonance. For simply supported bridge spans it relies, in general, on accurate assessment of span moment of inertia that governs span flexural stiffness. The paper presents three methods of estimation of the equivalent moment of inertia for such spans: experimental, analytical and numerical. Test loading of the twin truss bridge spans and test results are presented. Recorded displacements and the method of least squares are used to find an "experimental" moment of inertia. Then it is computed according to the analytical method that accounts for joint action of truss girders and composite deck as well as limited span shear stiffness provided by diagonal bracing. Finally a 3D model of finite element method is created to assess the moment of inertia. Discussion of results is given. The comparative analysis proves efficiency of the analytical method.
It is increasing construction of long span railway bridge with concrete track system for speed up of railway and efficient maintenance of track. As the sleeper of the concrete track system layed on a bridge is fixed on deck of the bridge, the displacement of the sleeper and deck is same. Therefore, the spacing between two sleeper installed at the end of the adjacent deck near the expansion joint of bridge becomes vary according to the longitudinal expansion of a deck by temperature change. By the way, if the spacing of sleepers become increase excessively, it causes large bending stress of in a rail, and it can leads failure or reduction of fatigue life of the rail. And also the excessive displacement of the rail may induce decrease ride comfort. Therefore, in order to prevent such problems, the allowable maximum sleeper spacing at a bridge expansion joint was mutually determined. And, the determination procedure of the maximum bridge expansion length based on the allowable sleeper spacing was suggested.
