  • In this paper, we consider the problem of designing decentralized sliding mode static output feedback control laws for a class of large scale systems with mismatched uncertainties. We derive a sufficient condition for the existence of a linear switching surface in terms of constrained linear matrix inequalities(LMIs), and we parameterize the linear switching surfaces in terms of the solution matrices to the given constrained LMI existence conditions. We also give an LMI-based algorithm for designing decentralized switching feedback control laws. Finally, we give a design example in order to show the effectiveness of our method.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to apply a decentralized control algorithm for passive velocity field control using virtual flywheel system to cooperative 3-wheeled mobile robots, and these subsystem are under nonholonomic constraints. The considered robotic systems convey a common rigid object in a horizontal plain. Moreover we will proof the passivity and robustness for cooperative mobile robotic systems with decentralized passive velocity field control. Finally, The effectiveness of proposed control algorithm is examined by numerical simulation for cooperation tasks with 3-wheeled mobile robot systems.

  • A decentralized control method is proposed to enable a group of robots to achieve maximum performance in multisensory target tracking while avoiding collision with the target. The decentralized control was designed based on navigation function formalism. The study showed that the multiple agent system converged to the positions providing the maximum performance by the decentralized controller, based on Lyapunov and Hessian theory. An exemplary simulation was given for a multiple agent system tracking a stationary target.

  • Formation controller for multiple spacecrafts is designed based on a decentralized approach. The objective of the proposed controller is to make each spacecraft fly to the desired waypoints, while keeping the formation shape of multiple spacecrafts. To design the decentralized formation controller, the output feedback linearization technique using error functions for goal convergence and formation keeping is utilized for spacecraft dynamics. The primary contribution of this paper is to proposed optimal controller for formation flying based on the decentralized approach. To design the optimal controller, eigenvalue assignment technique is used. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller, numerical simulations are performed for three-dimensional waypoint-passing missions of multiple spacecrafts.

  • This paper presents a decentralized quadratic regulation architecture with feedforward neural networks for the control problem of complex systems. In this method, the decentralized technique was used to treat several simple subsystems instead of a full complex system in order to reduce training time of neural networks, and the neural networks' nonlinear mapping ability is exploited to handle the nonlinear interaction variables between subsystems. The decentralized regulating architecture is composed of local neuro-controllers, local neuro-identifiers and an overall interaction neuro-identifier. With the interaction neuro-identifier that catches interaction characteristics, a local neuro-identifier is trained to simulate a subsystem dynamics. A local neuro-controller is trained to learn how to control the subsystem by using generalized Backprogation Through Time(BTT) algorithm. The proposed neural network based decentralized regulating scheme is applied in the power System Stabilization(PSS) control problem for an imterconnected power system, and compared with that by a conventional centralized LQ regulator for the power system.

  • The smart sensor technology has opened new horizons for assessing and monitoring structural health of civil infrastructure. Smart sensor's unique features such as onboard computation, wireless communication, and cost effectiveness can enable a dense network of sensors that is essential for accurate assessment of structural health in large-scale civil structures. While most research efforts to date have been focused on realizing wireless smart sensor networks (WSSN) on bridge structures, relatively less attention is paid to applying this technology to buildings. This paper presents a decentralized damage detection using the WSSN for building structures. An existing flexibility-based damage detection method is extended to be used in the decentralized computing environment offered by the WSSN and implemented on MEMSIC's Imote2 smart sensor platform. Numerical simulation and laboratory experiment are conducted to validate the WSSN for decentralized damage detection of building structures.

  • The deep seabed mining system is generally composed of surface vessel, lifting system, buffer, flexible pipe and miner. The milling system is regarded as a large-scale system in which each subsystem is interconnected to other one. In order to control a large-scale system, a decentralized control approaches have been proposed recently. In this paper, as a basic study on application of decentralized control, firstly, the mining system is simplified modeled, where the lifting system and buffer is regarded as a spherical pendulum and tile flexible pipe is as a two-dimension linear spring. Based on the derived model, the system characteristics and the feasibility of decentralized control are analyzed.

  • This study proposes a robust formation flight control technique of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) using behavior-based decentralized approach. The behavior-based decentralized method has various advantages because it utilizes information of neighboring UAVs only instead of information of whole UAVs in the formation maneuvering. The controllers in this paper are divided into two methods: first one is based on position and velocity of neighboring UAVs, and the other one is based on position of neighboring UAVs and passivity technique. The proposed controllers assure uniformly ultimate boundedness of closed-loops system under time varying bounded disturbances. Numerical simulations are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a new method for the optimal control of the distributed parameter systems by a decentralized computational procedure. Approximate lumped parameter models are derived by using the Galerkin method employing the Legendre polynomials as the basis functions. The distributed parameter systems, however, are transformed into the large scale lumped parameter models. And thus, the decentralized control scheme is introduced to determine the optimal control inputs for the obtained lumped parameter models. In addition, an approach to block pulse functions is applied to solve the optimal control problems of the obtained lumped parameter models. The proposed method is simple and efficient in computation for the optimal control of distributed paramter systems. Illustrative examples given to demonstrate the validity of the presently proposed method.
