  • The Amazon fires in summer 2019 triggered an incendiary Twitter debate between French president Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro that engaged political leaders, celebrities, and audiences worldwide. Currently, diplomats-in-chief connect to the global public through completely open debates, often without proper advice from foreign-affairs ministers, which may result in misunderstandings and conflicts among world leaders. Hence, this study argues that these interactions must be supported by Nicholas Cull's seven lessons in public diplomacy. The main topic on hand is presidential public diplomacy performed through digital means in cyberspace. Thus, after distinguishing cyberspace, digital diplomacy, and cyberdiplomacy, the literature review focuses on presidential public diplomacy, presidential diplomacy on Twitter, and Cull's seven lessons. Subsequently, the case study method provides a snapshot of the debate between Macron and Bolsonaro over the Amazon fires. This study concludes by answering the research question and indicating grist for the mill with regard to future developments.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the debate on the Lewisian turning point in China. Despite the heated debate and accumulating research results both inside and outside China, the results showed a very complex spectrum. Different results were presented depending on which criteria the researcher selected, which analytical tools were used, and which data were utilized. Territory of China is vast, and the differences in economic basement and development stages between regions are not only severe, but also the economic gap among areas in a region is big. Therefore, it is difficult to have a significant meaning in analyzing the Lewisian Turning Point China as a whole. In addition, China's industrial production and labor force structure remain very unbalanced. This can be said to be due to the fact that the allocation and relocation of labor force according to the stage of economic development has not been achieved reasonably, and so it confuses the task of determining whether the Lewis Turning Point has arrived of not.

  • This study attempts to explore the inter-media agenda setting effect between television and Twitter based on the framework of the two-step flow theory. Twitter's increasingly important role in political communication can be effectively addressed by examining the process by which Twitter users form their opinions on television debate program. Content analyses of Twitter discussions after television debate of the Korean presidential candidates provided interesting insights into how Twitter's opinion leaders reflect on the televised debates. The results show that Twitter mentions rather focus on personality traits of the candidates while television debates emphasize the candiates' policy issues. Specifically, Twitter users mainly concentrated on the political ideology and morality of the candidates. In sum, Twitter seems to have its own way of influencing the public opinion separately from the television.
