  • Newly developing SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) sensors commonly include high resolution X-band those data are expected to contribute various applications. Recent few studies are presenting potential of X-band SAR data in forest related application. This study tried to investigate the relationship between forest stand parameters and multi-band SAR normalized backscattering. Multi-band SAR data was radiometric corrected to compare signal from different forest stand condition. Then correlation coefficients were estimated between attribute of forest stand map and normalized backscattering coefficients. Although overall correlation coefficients are not high, only X-band shows strong relationship with DBH class than other bands. The signal of C- and L-band is composed of a large number of discrete tree components such as leaves, stems, even background soil. In forest, strength of radar backscattering is affected by complex parameters. Further study might be considered more various forest stand parameters such as canopy density, stand height, volume, and biomass.

  • The inhibitory effect and the structure-activity relationships of luteolin and its related derivatives isolated from Taraxacum mongolicum against MAO activities were investigated. The activity-guided isolation of extract from Taraxacum mongolicum led to the isolation of three flavonoids, luteolin, diosmetin, and luteolin-7-glucoside, a polyphenol, chlorogenic acid, a tyrosine and a uridine. The inhibitory activities of luteolin and its related derivatives against MAOs activities are dependent on their molecular structures. The presence of the phenolic hydroxy group at para-position is the active site for MAO-A inhibition as well as of MAO-B. The methoxy group has no potential on MAO-A inhibition. An additional phenolic hydroxy group at the ortho-position alleviates about 4-fold MAO-A inhibitory activity of phenolic hydroxy group at para-position. A carboxylic group seems to be critical for DBH inhibition and has no effects on MAO.

  • The objective was to verify biological activities of fruit and stem of prickly pear(Opuntia ficus indica L. var, saboten Makino). We have determined inhibitory activities on enzymes, such as dopamine ${\beta}$-hydroxylase(DBH), monoamme oxidase A and B(MAO-A, B), and antioxidant activity, in vitro. We purchased dried stem powder and lyophilized fruit powder of prickly pear from CheJu Island, and prepared the extracts with 80% of methanol. The fruit extract showed stronger inhibitory effects on MAO-A and -B and antioxidant activity compared. to the stem extract, on fractionation with hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water. Both the stem and the fruit extracts with ethyl acetate showed stronger enzyme inhibitory and antioxidant activities than other extracts. Now we are isolating active principles from both ethyl acetate extracts.

  • This study has been carried out to estimate aboveground carbon contents in an average 30-years-old Betula platyphylla and 32-years-old Juglans mandshurica stands in Chungju, Chungbuk Province. Nine sample trees were cut in each forest and soil samples were collected. Carbon concentration in stemwood, stembark, branch, and foliage were ranged from 54.6% to 57.0% in Betula platyphylla and 53.5% to 56.9% in Juglans mandshurica stands. Aboveground carbon contents was estimated by the equation model logWt=A+BlogD where Wt is oven-dry weight in kg and D is DBH in cm. Total aboveground carbon contents was 34.31t/ha in Betula platyphylla stand and 21.10t/ha in Juglans mandshurica stand. Aboveground net primary carbon production was estimated at 2.31t/ha/yr in Betula platyphylla stand and 2.03t/ha/yr in Juglans mandshurica stand.

  • Disulfiram (tetraethylthiuram disulphid) is used in the treatment of chronic alcoholism since it causes an unpleasant aversive reaction to alcohol. It works by inactivating hepatic aldehyde dehydrogenase, leading to pronounced rise in the acetaldehyde concentration when ethanol is metabolized. Acetaldehyde causes alcohol sensitivity, which involve vasodilation associated with feeling of hotness and facial flushing, increased heart rate and respiration rates, lowered blood pressure, nausea, headache. One of its metabolites, diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) can inhibit the enzyme dopamine $\beta$-hydroxylase (DBH), this may account for the profound refractory hypotension and hypothermia seen with the disulfiram-ethanol reaction (DER), resulting from norepinephrine depletion. This report is presents the case of a patient we met, who presented with hypothermia caused by the disulfiram-ethanol reaction, and along with a brief review of the subject.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the mid-growth of Norway spruce at the age of 27 and select the superior provenances in Korea. Growth performance of twenty-four provenances from Germany and Rumania were investigated in four plantations. Significant differences were found in growth (height, DBH, volume) with plantations. Maximum growth were detected on plantation Chuncheon which located in most northern area, and minimum growth were detected on plantation Wanju located in most southern area. The rank of height in provenances has fluctuated, but superior/inferior groups have been almost fixed. 840-23, 840-10, 840-19 in Germany, G1-64-57, G1-64-54 in Rumania proved excellent provenances. Height in early stage positively correlated with that in late stage. The growth was positively correlated with latitude and altitude of plantations, but negatively correlated with temperature.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between polarimetric radar backscatters and stand characteristics over the mountainous forest area. L- and P-band full polarimetric airborne SAR data obtained in September 2000 were processed to compare with forest stand maps and ground collected stand variables. After the geometric registration of SAR image, mean radar backscatters were extracted for those ground plots where the stand parameters, such as tree height, DBH, and basal area, were measured during and after the SAR data acquisition. Preliminary analysis was focused on the topographic influence of radar backscattering under the homogeneous forest stand condition. Topographic effects, assessed by the local incidence angles, were different obvious in L-band data while it was not clear with P-band data.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the felling productivity by chain saw in thinning operation of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) stands. Time study data were collected from 4 thinning site in Korean pine stands. This study derived a regression model to estimate the average felling cycle time for evaluating the productivity in felling, which was used to analyze the felling productivity by thinning period. In the study sites, the average felling cycle time per a tree was 463 sec/cycle and the productivity was $2.26m^3/hr$. Thinning period in Korean pine is divided into three groups by producing purposes; small-diameter log, medium-diameter log, and large-diameter log. And analyzed working time and productivity from thinning period fixed by producing purposes. For the small-diameter log producing purpose estimated to be thinning period operated once when the mean DBH was 16 cm and its productivity was $8.94m^3/man{\cdot}day$. For the medium-diameter and large-diameter log producing purposes, thinning period was twice and three times when the mean DBH of the 1st and 2nd thinning period was 16 cm and 21 cm, and its productivity was $9.06m^3/man{\cdot}day$ and $10.86m^3/man{\cdot}day$. The 30 cm in DBH and $15.12m^3/man{\cdot}day$ in productivity was operated 3rd thinning for the large-diameter log producing purposes.
