  • Rapid palatal expansion(RPE) is a method of inducing the new bone formation in the palate by separation of the midpalatal suture, which can be done conveniently by placing heavy force across the maxillary dental arch. This experiment was undertaken to examine the histologic changes after RPE and during retention period. Four young adult dogs(a control dog, three experimental dogs) aged 4 to 6 months old were used for this experiment. Expansion screw($Hyrax^{\circledR}$, Dentarum Inc.) was delevered to the palate and fumed 180 degrees every morning and evening for 8 days, giving a total expansion of 7.2mm. A control dog was sacrified at the starting point of this study without any treatment and three experimental dogs were sacrified after RPE, 14-day retention, and 28-day retention in each. Thereafter, those samples were observed with hematoxylin-eosin(H-E) stain, ground section(Villanueva stain), alkaline phosphatase(ALP) stain, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase(TRA) stain. The results were as followings: 1. After RPE, collagen fiber bundles were stretched along the midpalatal suture and few osteoblasts were flattened-inactive state and also, a little osteoid tissues was observed. Few multinucleated osteoclasts which had TRAP-positive activity in their cytoplasm were seen in horizontal section, whereas a few osteoclasts were seen in frontal section, especially in the nasal floor side of palatal bone. 2. After 14-day retention, collagen fiber bundles were stretched along the midpalatal suture and few osteoblasts which had ALP-positive activity in their cytoplasm were seen. Few multinucleated osteoclasts which had TRAP-positive activity in their cytoplasm were seen in horizontal section, whereas a few osteoclasts were seen in frontal section, especially in the nasal floor side of palatal bone. 3. After 28-day retention, collagen fiber bundles were arranged like those of control dog and osteoblasts which showed a lot of immature bone formation were cuboidal shape and exhibited ALP-positive activity in their cytoplasm. Few multinucleated osteoclasts which had TRAP-positive activity in their cytoplasm were seen in horizontal section, whereas a few osteoclasts were seen in frontal section, especially in the nasal floor side of palatal bone. According to the above results, the new bone formation after rapid palatal expansion was examined after 14-day retention and significantly increased after 28-day retention.

  • Though it has been reported by Clements et al. and Avery et al. that the activity of the pulmonary surfactant can be altered by the temperature changes, a conclusive evidence of the effects of temperature on the surfactant system of the lung is yet to come. In the present study, an attempt was made to observe possible effects of a few different degrees of temperature on the activity of the pulmonary surfactant of the rabbit in vivo and in vitro. The rabbit was sacrificed by blood shedding and both lungs were completely removed. The lung washings, obtained by gently lavaging the left lung with saline, was placed at 1) 4C for 1, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 40 days, and 2) 20C for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 days for in vitro experiment. For in vivo experiment, the rabbit was placed at 4C for 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours, and the lung lavage was prepared as described above in the in vitro experiment. Tension-area (T-A) diagram of the lung lavage was recorded automatically by a modified. Langmuir-Wilhelmy balance with a synchronized recording system. The surface tensions thus obtained were compared with those of the normal rabbit, and the results are summarized as follows: 1. The maximal surface tension, minimal surface tension and stability index of the normal rabbit lung lavage were $52.5{\pm}2.3\;dynes/cm,\;4.9{\pm}2.3\;dynes/cm$ and 1.65, respectively. 2. In the group where the lung lavage was placed at 4C in vitro, the maximal and minimal surface tensions, and stability index did not show any noticeable changes comparing with the normal values up to 30 days. On the 40th day of the experiment, a tendency of a slight increase in the surface tensions was observed but the change was not significant. 3. When the lung lavage was placed at 20 C in vitro, the maximal surface tension did not show any appreciable change comparing with the normal except on the 7 th day with a slight increase. The minimal surface tension showed an increased value from the 2nd day, and on the 5 th and 7 th experimental day, markedly increased value was observed. The stability index, on the other hand. showed a marked decrease throughout the entire experiment with the value of 0.71 and 0.53 on the 5th and 7 th day, respectively. 4. In the group where the rabbit was placed at 4 C in vivo, the maximal surface tensions and stability index of the lung lavage showed little change from the normal. The minimal surface tension at 12 experimental hour showed a slight increase, but it returned to the normal value at 24 hour.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effects of low-intensity ultrasound application to the peripheral nerve injury animal model on enhancement of nerve regeneration and functional recovery. Using aseptic microsurgical techniques, the sciatic nerve of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats was crushed at the outside of right mid-thigh for 30 seconds with fine forceps. Beginning just after surgery, various continuous-wave ultrasound treatments with intensities of 0.2 W/$cm^2$, 0.5 W /$cm^2$ and 1.0 W /$cm^2$ operated at 1 MHz or sham treatment were applied to the opposite inside of the crush site for 1 minute every other day with a transducer moving speed of 2cm/sec. For evaluation of the progress of sciatic nerve regeneration, c-Fos expression in the lumbar spinal cord (L4-5) dorsal horn was investigated. c-fos expression was markedly increased at 1hour after sciatic nerve crush injury, then gradually decreased thereafter. The c-fos expressions were significantly decreased (p<0.05) in all the experimental groups in comparison with the control group until 3days post-crush, and the degrees of decrease were higher in 0.5 W/$cm^2$ and 1 W/$cm^2$ intensity ultrasound application groups. It is suggested that low-intensity ultrasound application to an animal model of sciatic crush injury may suppress pain transmission and promote nerve regeneration, and which may result in delayed progress of muscle atrophy and accelerated progress of muscle recovery and eventually may result in accelerated and improved foot function recovery.

  • The research concerned of the regeneration of plants from embryos obtained from anther cultures of ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer). The aim was to determine the influence of the regeneration medium on the efficiency of the regeneration process. We conducted to determine the optimum conditions such as cold pretreatment, plant growth regulators and carbon sources on anther culture of P. ginseng. Highest callus formation rate was obtained when flower buds pretreated at $4^{\circ}C$ for 1 day. Among the treated growth regulators with various degrees of concentration in Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium, 4.53 ${\mu}M$ of 2.4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 4.44 ${\mu}M$ of 6-benzylaminopurine gives the most responsive callus with the frequency of 73.89% and 129.53 g of fresh weight. When we used 3-9% of sucrose and maltose among the different kinds and various concentrations of carbohydrates, callus was formed highest 67.29% in the medium with 3% of sucrose. Shoots induced from callus supplemented with 28.9 ${\mu}M$ of gibberellic acid and rooted in Gamborg's B5 medium supplemented with 14.7 ${\mu}M$ of indole-3-butyric acid.

  • The handicapped frequently suffer from inappropriate food intake often resulting in overweightness, malnutrition, and poor growth and development. Our study was done on 7 to 12 year old mentally retarded children attending a special education school in Seoul. We administered questionnaire surveys and 3-day dietary recalls of the subjects, with help when needed from their stay-at home or their care-giving teachers. The questionnaires covered the general characteristics and dietary behaviors of the subjects. The degrees of handicap of the 142 children ranged from the trainable (54.9%), the educable (31.0%), and the non-trainable (14.1%). Of the children studied, 70.4% had ‘breakfast always’, which was higher than normal. Appetites were highest in the Down's Syndrome group. We found that the more serious the handicap, the higher the breakfast eating ratio and appetite level. The main reason for their missing breakfast differed according to the handicap level: ‘late rising’in the educable and non-trainable groups but ‘no appetite’in the trainable group. Most of the children (52.2%) spent less than 20 minutes eating their meals, the parents described their children's dietary habit problems as a pica (22:3%) or overeating (17.3%) , and they indicated that teaching the children how to use spoons and chopsticks (33.1%) was the most stressful. Actually more than 85% of the subjects could not use chopsticks, and skill of using cutlery was significantly different according to the degree of handicap. The food preference for milk products was the highest. It was interesting that the handicapped who had serious food pica didn't like food groups such as grains/starches, meats/fishes/eggs/beans or vegetables/fruits.

  • Although conservative management of congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) has been well documented, relatively little is known about the response to the treatment. The purposes of this case report were to describe the use of a therapeutic approach based on motor development in physical therapy intervention for an infant with CMT and to report the result of the treatment. The patient was a 20-day-old baby boy with left CMT presenting muscular mass in the left sternocleidomastoid muscle. The angle of the lateral head tilt was 20 degrees. The size of muscular mass was 5.3 mm in ultrasonography. Intervention included ultrasonic therapy, soft tissue massage, passive and active range of motion exercises, motor developmental therapy, and parent instruction. The procedures of motor developmental therapy and changes in the amount of lateral head tilt were documented using photography. The size of the mass was decreased to .3 mm before the 5-month follow-up. The patient also maintained a midline head position in the supine position and a midline head alignment during all functional activities. A therapeutic approach based on motor development is a beneficial method for reducing an asymmetrical head and neck position, and facilitating normal development as a component of physical therapy intervention.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the geomorphic processes of beach and sanddune development in the Chungcheong-Namdo Province. The sands consist mainly of quartz and feldspar with lesser amounts of mica and other heavy minerals. With the exception of those from the granite, the sands have a very fine texture. Another characteristic of the sand grains is low degrees of roundness and grading indicating that source areas for the material were in the vicinity of the accumulating field. Over the years, the beaches have receded as a response to the decreasing amount of depositional materials. The driving force for the formation and transformation of coastal dunes in the study area is dominant winds from the center of the Siberian High. To some extent, the erosion of coastal dunes has been a global phenomenon. The degradation process occurred most actively when spring tides attacked beaches, berms, and foredunes. The relief and shape of present-day coastal dunes is determined initially by the Pleistocene strata underneath. From the fact that the strata contained traces of frozen structure, it can be inferred that sediment once experienced the process of soil formation.

  • A study was planned to evaluate the influence of continual heating at $150{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ and $170{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ respectively upon edible oils for frying the several food. Two kinds of domestic edible oils (Sample A and B) were collected by random sampling from market and in order to estimate deterioration degrees at both temperatures previously mentioned, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value, acid value (AV), peroxide value (POV) and carbonyl value (CV) were measured at intervals due to its optical density. Those values were examined and compared according to the temperatures and times, and it was concluded as follows: 1) TBA value was rapidly increased until 24 hours in both temperatures and after 1 day its value have shown a slower increase as compared with initial rapid reaction. 2) Acid value and peroxide value of both oils (A & B) used for frying were increased continuously during heating and the changes in these values were dependent on the thermal oxidation, and moreover at low temperature $(150{\pm}5^{\circ}C)$ these values were found to be increased more readily than at high temperature $(170{\pm}5^{\circ}C)$. 3) Carbonyl value of both sample A and B show almost the same increasing rate at either $150{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ or $170{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ in proportion to the heating time. 4) It was found that there were differences between the chemical changes caused by heating sample A and B at high and low temperature.

  • Background: Neuropathic pain, including paresthesia/dysesthesia in the lower extremities, always develops and remains for at least one month, to variable degrees, after percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD). The recently discovered dual analgesic mechanisms of action, similar to those of antidepressants and anticonvulsants, enable nefopam (NFP) to treat neuropathic pain. This study was performed to determine whether NFP might reduce the neuropathic pain component of postoperative pain. Methods: Eighty patients, who underwent PELD due to herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) at L4-L5, were randomly divided into two equal groups, one receiving NFP (with a mixture of morphine and ketorolac) and the other normal saline (NS) with the same mixture. The number of bolus infusions and the infused volume for 3 days were compared in both groups. The adverse reactions (ADRs) in both groups were recorded and compared. The neuropathic pain symptom inventory (NPSI) score was compared in both groups on postoperative days 1, 3, 7, 30, 60, and 90. Results: The mean attempted number of bolus infusions, and effective infused bolus volume for 3 days was lower in the NFP group for 3 days. The most commonly reported ADRs were nausea, dizziness, and somnolence, in order of frequency in the NFP group. The median NPSI score, and all 5 median sub-scores in the NFP group, were significantly lower than that of the NS group until postoperative day 30. Conclusions: NFP significantly reduced the neuropathic pain component, including paresthesia/dysesthesia until 1 month after PELD. The common ADRs were nausea, dizziness, somnolence, and ataxia.
