Ethernet-Based Avionic Databus and Time-Space Partition Switch Design

  • Avionic databuses fulfill a critical function in the connection and communication of aircraft components and functions such as flight-control, navigation, and monitoring. Ethernet-based avionic databuses have become the mainstream for large aircraft owning to their advantages of full-duplex communication with high bandwidth, low latency, low packet-loss, and low cost. As a new generation aviation network communication standard, avionics full-duplex switched ethernet (AFDX) adopted concepts from the telecom standard, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). In this technology, the switches are the key devices influencing the overall performance. This paper reviews the avionic databus with emphasis on the switch architecture classifications. Based on a comparison, analysis, and discussion of the different switch architectures, we propose a new avionic switch design based on a time-division switch fabric for high flexibility and scalability. This also merges the design concept of space-partition switch fabric to achieve reliability and predictability. The new switch architecture, called space partitioned shared memory switch (SPSMS), isolates the memory space for each output port. This can reduce the competition for resources and avoid conflicts, decrease the packet forwarding latency through the switch, and reduce the packet loss rate. A simulation of the architecture with optimized network engineering tools (OPNET) confirms the efficiency and significant performance improvement over a classic shared memory switch, in terms of overall packet latency, queuing delay, and queue size.

  • We know that the all of warfare system has been becoming complex and variety in warfield thru the Gulf-War. The all of warfare electronic systems is designed to inter-operate by networks in recently. Especially Warfare Equipment systems of Men-of-War(War ship) as like KDX(Korea Destroyer, Experimental), FF(Frigate), PCC(Costal Patrol Craft), Submarine are connected by Combat System Databus to the Command system(C2 System), so C2 system can control all of equipments in ship. In this view, the status of network(Combat System Databus) is very critical parameter in war field. So In this paper, we propose the method of Network Management System construction for War ship, and especially propose the architectural design of network management system for DX(Destroyer, Experimental) equipments using SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol). And Link Utilization is monitored by simulation.

  • Avionics technologies have been developed with a development of an airplane since 1903. Historically, radio communication was started in 1910's, radio navigations in 1920's and autopilot was applied first in 1930's. Glass cockpit was initiate on MD-80 in 1979 first and now spreaded widely and similar with GPS navigation. Avionics in modern aircraft has a great deal of importance in view of flight safety and maintaining comfortableness. As avionics develops, so do the certification technologies. This paper introduces update avionics certification technologies developed recently.

Performance of Fault-tolerant Ethernet System with Link-bypass scheme for Airbone Databus (항공 데이터버스용 링크 우회방식을 가진 고장감내 이더넷 시스템의 성능 분석)

  • The link-fault recovery in the normal Ethernet bridged networks has relied on the Spanning Tree Protocol(STP) or Rapid STP. However, STP can not offer fast error recovery which is needed real-time services such as aircraft. In this paper, we compare automatic protection switching(APS) providing fault-tolerant function in the BcN back bone system with Avionic Full Duplex Switched Ethernet(AFDX) which is recently equipped in the A380 for Airbone Databuses. Also, we propose a link-bypass scheme for improving fault-tolerant performance of the AFDX by connecting switches and bypass fault section when a fault is originated on the link. For comparing and verifying the performance of proposed scheme, we simulated Ethernet, AFDX, APS and proposed AFDX with link-bypass scheme using NS-2. The proposed AFDX with link-bypass scheme can be applied to aircrafts, BcN backbone networks and industrial automatic networks.
