To realize artificial device with sensing ability of the human skin, a mono-material tactile sensor with three sensing functions made of some elastic thin electro-conductive rubber sheet with eight latticed patch elements is proposed. This trial sensor provides the information of three kinds of model material characteristics such as thermal property, hardness property and the surface situation of materials by setting up three kinds of surface models as test materials. It can be finally expected to estimate unknown model materials by analyzing the data of the sensor.
The age of autonomous vehicles has come according to development of high performance sensing and artificial intelligence technologies. And importance of the vehicle's surrounding environment sensing and observation is increasing accordingly because of its stability and control efficiency. In this paper we propose an integrated platform for efficient networking, analysis and monitoring of multiple sensing data on the vehicle that are equiped with various automotive sensors such as GPS, weather radar, automotive radar, temperature and humidity sensors. From simulation results, we could see that the proposed platform could perform realtime analysis and monitoring of various sensing data that were observed from the vehicle sensors. And we expect that our system can support drivers or autonomous vehicles to recognize optimally various sudden or danger driving environments on the road.
It is possible to extract qualified ground control points (GCPs) solely from SAR data without published maps. TerraSAR-X is now in orbit and provides valuable data that have one of the highest spatial resolutions among civilian SAR systems. In this study, a sophisticated method for GCP coordinate extraction from TerraSAR-X stripmap mode data with a 3 m resolution was tested and the quality of the extracted GCPs was evaluated. An inverse-geolocation algorithm was applied to obtain GCPs from TerraSAR-X data. SRTM 90m DEM was used as an auxiliary data set for azimuth time correction of the SAR data. Mean values of the distance errors were 0.11 m and -3.96 m with standard deviations of 6.52 m and 5.11 m in easting and northing, respectively. The result is one of the best among GCPs possibly extracted from current civilian remote sensing systems. The extracted GCPs were used for geo-rectification of an IKONOS image, which demonstrated the applicability of the GCPs to geo-rectification of high resolution optic image. The method used in this study can be applied to KOMPSAT-5 for geo-rectification of high-resolution optic images acquired by KOMPSAT-2 or follow-up missions.

In a wireless sensor network(WSN) each sensor node deals with numerous sensing data elements. For the sake of energy efficiency and network lifetime, sensing data must be handled effectively. A technique used for this is data aggregation. Sending/receiving data involves numerous steps such as MAC layer control packet handshakes and route path setup, and these steps consume energy. Because these steps are involved in all data communication, the total cost increases are related to the counts of data sent/received. Therefore, many studies have proposed sending combined data, which is known as data aggregation. Very effective methods to aggregate sensing data have been suggested, but there is no means of deciding how long the sensor node should wait for aggregation. This is a very important issue, because the wait time affects the total communication cost and data reliability. There are two types of data aggregation; the data counting method and the time waiting method. However, each has weaknesses in terms of the delay. A hybrid method can be adopted to alleviate these problems. But, it cannot provide an optimal point of aggregation. In this paper, we suggest a stochastic-based data aggregation scheme, which provides the cost(in terms of communication and delay) optimal aggregation point. We present numerical analysis and results.
In this paper we describe the shape measuring technique and system with a non-contractive sensor, composed of slit-ray projector and solid-state camera. For improving the accuracy and preventing measuring dead point, this sensor part is attached to the end of robot, and each sensing is executed after one step moving. By patching these sensing data, whole measuring data is constructed. The calibration between sensor and world coordinate is implemented through the specific calibration block by transformation matrix method. The result of experiment was satisfactory.
Arc-spot welding is generally used in joining of precise parts such as case and core in electronic compressor. It is important to control joining deformation in electronic compressor because clearance control in micrometer order is needed for excellent airtightness and anti-nose. The countermeasures far this deformation in field have mainly been dependent on the rule of try and error by operator's experience because of productivities. For control this deformation problem without influence on productivities, development of exact simulation model should be needed. In this study, to solve this deformation problem in arc-spot welded structure with case and core, we intend to make a simulation model that is able to predict deformation in precise order by tuning and feedback between sensing data and simulation results. This paper include development of heat input model for arc-spot welding, temperature monitoring and make a heat transfer model using sensing data in product.
Most nations around the world have expressed significant concern in the climate change due to a rapid increase in green-house gases and thus reach an international agreement to control total amount of these gases for the mitigation of global warming. As the most important absorber of carbon dioxide, one of major green-house gases, forest resources should be more tightly managed with a means to measure their total amount, forest biomass, efficiently and accurately. Forest biomass has close relations with forest areas and tree height. Airborne LiDAR data helps extract biophysical properties on forest resources such as tree height more efficiently by providing detailed spatial information about the wide-range ground surface. Many researchers have thus developed various methods to estimate tree height using LiDAR data, which retain different performance and characteristics depending on forest environment and data characteristics. In this study, we attempted to investigate such various techniques to estimate tree height, elaborate their advantages and limitations, and suggest future research directions. We first examined the characteristics of LiDAR data applied to forest studies and then analyzed methods on filtering, a precedent procedure for tree height estimation. Regarding the methods for tree height estimation, we classified them into two categories: individual tree-based and regression-based method and described the representative methods under each category with a summary of their analysis results. Finally, we reviewed techniques regarding data fusion between LiDAR and other remote sensing data for future work.
Land Remote Sensing' is defined as the science (and to some extent, art) of acquiring information about the Earth's surface without actually being in contact with it. Narrowly speaking, this is done by sensing and recording reflected or emitted energy and processing, analyzing, and applying that information. Remote sensing technology was initially developed with certain purposes in mind ie. military and environmental observation. However, after 1970s, as these high-technologies were taught to private industries, remote sensing began to be more commercialized. Recently, we are witnessing a 0.61-meter high-resolution satellite image on a free market. While privatization of land remote sensing has enabled one to use this information for disaster prevention, map creation, resource exploration and more, it can also create serious threat to a sensed nation's national security, if such high resolution images fall into a hostile group ie. terrorists. The United States, a leading nation for land remote sensing technology, has been preparing and developing legislative control measures against the remote sensing industry, and has successfully created various policies to do so. Through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's authority under the Land Remote Sensing Policy Act, the US can restrict sensing and recording of resolution of 0.5 meter or better, and prohibit distributing/circulating any images for the first 24 hours. In 1994, Presidential Decision Directive 23 ordered a 'Shutter Control' policy that details heightened level of restriction from sensing to commercializing such sensitive data. The Directive 23 was even more strengthened in 2003 when the Congress passed US Commercial Remote Sensing Policy. These policies allow Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State to set up guidelines in authorizing land remote sensing, and to limit sensing and distributing satellite images in the name of the national security - US government can use the civilian remote sensing systems when needed for the national security purpose. The fact that the world's leading aerospace technology country acknowledged the magnitude of land remote sensing in the context of national security, and it has made and is making much effort to create necessary legislative measures to control the powerful technology gives much suggestions to our divided Korean peninsula. We, too, must continue working on the Korea National Space Development Act and laws to develop the necessary policies to ensure not only the development of space industry, but also to ensure the national security.

In this paper, we propose a new energy efficient scheme which can prolong the life of sensor networks, it should be able to reduce the number of sensing. We use the concept of safe zone for manage the appropriate range of properties. We measure the distance between the sensed temperature value and the center of the zone, and calculate the next sensing interval based on this distance. We name our proposed scheme "VIS". To assess the performance of the proposed scheme the actual temperature data was collected using the sensor node. The algorithm was implemented through the programming and was evaluated in a variety of settings. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is to significantly reduce the number of sensing in terms of energy efficiency while having the ability to know the state of the sensor nodes periodically. Our VIS algorithm can be useful in applications which will require the ability of control to the temperature within a proper range.

The robots that will be needed in the near future are human-friendly robots that are able to coexist with humans and support humans effectively. To realize this, robot need to recognize his position and direction for intelligent performance in an unknown environment. And the mobile robots may navigate by means of a number of monitoring systems such as the sonar-sensing system or the visual-sensing system. Notice that in the conventional fusion schemes, the measurement is dependent on the current data sets only. Therefore, more of sensors are required to measure a certain physical parameter or to improve the accuracy of the measurement. However, in this research, instead of adding more sensors to the system, the temporal sequence of the data sets are stored and utilized for the accurate measurement. As a general approach of sensor fusion, a UT -Based Sensor Fusion(UTSF) scheme using Unscented Transformation(UT) is proposed for either joint or disjoint data structure and applied to the landmark identification for mobile robot navigation. Theoretical basis is illustrated by examples and the effectiveness is proved through the simulations and experiments. The newly proposed, UT-Based UTSF scheme is applied to the navigation of a mobile robot in an unstructured environment as well as structured environment, and its performance is verified by the computer simulation and the experiment.
