Abnormal changes in skin color induce significant cosmetic problems and affect quality of life. There are two groups of abnormal change in skin color; hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. Hyperpigmentation, darkening skin color by excessive pigmentation, is a major concern for Asian people with yellowe-brown skin. A variety of hypopigmenting agents have been used, but treating the hyperpigmented condition is still challenging and the results are often discouraging. Panax ginseng has been used traditionally in eastern Asia to treat various diseases, due to its immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, antioxidative, and antitumor activities. Recently, several reports have shown that extract, powder, or some constituents of ginseng could inhibit melanogenesis in vivo or in vitro. The underlying mechanisms of antimelanogenic properties in ginseng or its components include the direct inhibition of key enzymes of melanogenesis, inhibition of transcription factors or signaling pathways involved in melanogenesis, decreasing production of inducers of melanogenesis, and enhancing production of antimelanogenic factor. Although there still remain some controversial issues surrounding the antimelanogenic activity of ginseng, especially in its effect on production of proinflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide, these recent findings suggest that ginseng and its constituents might be potential candidates for novel skin whitening agents.

Purpose : We aimed to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of minor clinical manifestations of atopic dermatitis (AD) in Korean children to aid the diagnosis and treatment of AD. Methods : From April 2007 to December 2007, we enrolled 106 children (aged 1 month [infants] to 15 years) diagnosed with AD at the Pediatric Allergy Respiratory Center in Soonchunhyang University Hospital. Clinical manifestations were examined and laboratory findings (total and specific immunoglobulin E [IgE] levels and peripheral blood eosinophil count) were analyzed and compared. Results : Minor symptoms, in order of frequency, included xerosis (78.3%), aggravation due to environmental or emotional stress (43.4%), lichenification (35.8%), orbital darkening (34.0%), periauricular eczema (33.0%), and cutaneous infection (31.1%). Older children (${\geq}2$ years) showed more orbital darkening (P=0.01), horizontal crease (P=0.01), and lichenification (P=0.001) than infants. Patients with severe AD (scoring atopic dermatitis [SCORAD] score, ${\geq}40$) showed higher frequencies of xerosis (P= 0.04), cutaneous infection (P=0.03), ichthyosis (P=0.18), keratosis pilaris (P=0.02), pityriasis alba (P=0.07), recurrent conjunctivitis (P=0.02), orbital darkening (P=0.001), aggravation due to environmental or emotional stress (P=0.05), facial eczema (P=0.001), lichenification (P=0.001), and hand/foot eczema (P=0.04) than those with mild-to-moderate AD. Children with atopic eczema showed more facial eczema (P=0.01) and lichenification (P=0.04) than those with non-atopic eczema. Conclusion : The clinical manifestations of AD were similar to those established by Hanifin and Rajka. However, we need to develop our own diagnostic criteria for AD, because the frequencies shown by our subjects differed from those observed in other countries.
Absorption pattern and sensitivity of radishes to boron were compared with different boron treatment: soil application, foliar spray and no boron application. Six radish cultivars were planted on April 7 and harvested on June 23. Borax 1.5 Kg per 10 a was applied to soil before seeding and the 150 litters of 0.5 ppm solution with bolic acid was sprayed on leaves 3 times during the growing period. Boron content in plant was markedly increased by the soil application but no significant difference in boron contents in plants was observed between foliar spray and no application, presumably because of the insufficient dose of foliar spray. The darkening rot in root, a boron deficiency, was negligible in radishes grown in soil application plots whereas a relatively higher percentage of boron deficient plant was found from foliar spray or no application plots. The appearance of root darkening rot occurred at the rapid root enlargement stage, apparently from 55 days to 65 days after seeding. The boron contents in plants of soil application plots slightly increased at this stage while those of no boron application and foliar spray decreased. This obviously verified that boron deficiency should cause root rots showing highly significant relationship.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of panoramic radiological risk signs related with mandibular third molar extraction, and the relationship between these risk signs and inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury after tooth extraction. Cases were defined as 1000 mandibular third molars extracted by surgical approach at Samsung Medical Center during the period from March 2001 to December 2006. Seven radiological risk signs were assessed on the panoramic radiogram by three expert oral surgeons. Clinical demographic data and severity of IAN injury were examined on medical records. Bivariate analyses were completed to assess the relationship between radiological risk signs and IAN injury. The radiological risk signs showed in 381 cases(38.1%). The incidence of each radiological risk signs were; interruption of IAN white line, 152 cases(15.2%); deflected roots, 141 cases(14.1%); darkening root, 119 cases(11.9%); diversion of IAN, 57 cases(5.7%) ; IAN narrowing, 37 cases(3.7%); root narrowing, 17 cases(1.7%); dark and bifid apex, 10 cases(1.0%). The incidence of IAN injury in cases with risk signs were: in the case of any sign, 3.6%; interruption of IAN white line, 2.6%; deflected roots 5.7%; darkening root. 3.4%; diversion of IAN, 5.7%; IAN narrowing, 3.7%; root narrowing, 5.9%; dark and bifid apex, 0%. No IAN injury was showed in 619 cases without risk sign (p<0.05). In conclusion, the presence of panoramic risk signs was associated with an increased risk for IAN injury during mandibular third molar extraction, whereas the absence of risk signs was associated with a minimal risk of nerve injury.
On painting cultural properties to which Orpiment, a traditional yellow mineral pigment, is applied, the color's degeneration is frequently observed. To identify the cause of the degeneration, this study takes a look into orpiment and the various pigments that are mixed into it (Lead White, Lead Red, and Cinnabar) in powder and painting state. The pigment was mixed with Argyo glue and then applied to korean traditional paper and silk. Considering the possibility that alum causes the discoloration, it was applied to the specimen. With a UV tester, the powders and the painted specimens were subjected to a light resistance test in three phases (96 hour). Color changes were measured with a colorimeter and minerals, chemical composition and structural changes were analysed by XRD, SEM/EDS and Raman spectrometers. While the color change of pure Orpiment powder according to the light resistance test was small, the colored specimen became darker. The color change was large in the Orpiment colored on the silk and in the alum-treated specimen. In Orpiment powder was produced white arsenolite as altered orpiment after UV test. In the mixed powder of Orpiment and Lead White were detected only the constituent minerals of Orpiment and Lead White, and no altered substances were produced. Whereas after the UV test, orpiment and arsenolite, which were altered substances of orpiment, and the constituent minerals of Lead White were detected. In the case of mixing the two pigments in the powder state, darkening did not occur even by the UV test. However, the specimens colored with the mixed powder were darkened by the UV test. The color change of Orpiment was different depending on the mixed pigment and base material. The color change was greater in the case of alum treatment than in the case without alum treatment, and it was found that alum also had an influence on the color change of Orpiment.
The rate of apparent nitric oxide (NO) release, as measured in the exhaust gas of green alga, Scenedesmus obliquus, depended on the light intensity and pH. It doubled after lowering the temperature from $25^{\circ}C{\;}to{\;}15^{\circ}C$ and strongly decreased from $35^{\circ}C{\;}to{\;}42^{\circ}C$. The Scenedesmus cells, deficient in nitrogen or phosphorus, demonstrated a significant increase in NO production following their transfer to nitrate- and phosphate-rich media. The addition of herbicides (DCMU and glyphosate) or toxic concentrations of $Cu^{2+}{\;}or{\;}Fe^{3+}$ produced strong NO peaks, resembling those that occurred after sudden darkening. An increase in the $Ni^{2+}$ concentration to 20 ppm resulted in a gradual increase of NO release from the initial ~1.5 ppbv to>20 ppbv, whereas $Cd^{2+}$ instantaneously suppressed the NO by the cultures of Scenedesmus was not altered by L-NNA, an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), or by its substrate, L-arginine. This seems to exclude the role of NOS in the NO formation under study. Accordingly, it can be assumed that the rate of NO formation is mainly a function of dynamic nitrite pool sizes and environmental factors significantly affect the NO production in algae.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of high temperature and humidity on the ageing of processed leaf tobacco. Four(1993) or six(1994) grades (Both flued-cured and burley) of processed leaf packed in carton box were stored under the natural and artificial conditions. When the Processed leaf was stored in the controlled mom at 40℃ with 75% R.H.(1993) for 40 days, the leaf pH was decreased. The decreasing rate of leaf pH was similar to that of leaf stored under the natural warehouse condition for 15 months. The degree of lightness and yellowness of leaf also decreased, while the decaying or darkening of the leaf was observed. When the processed leaf was stored in the controlled room at 35℃ with 65% R.H.(1994) for 90 days, the pH of flue-cured was decreased 0.22, which was similar to that of the leaf stored under the natural warehouse condition for 15 months, and the lightness, and redness of the leaf were higher than those of the control. As compared with the leaf stored under the natural condition for 2 years, the smoking quality of leaf stored under this condition was similar or somewhat better. The pH of burley tobacco changed little compared to that of flue-cured during storage in this study.
Space weathering agents such as micrometeoroids and solar wind particles continuously age the uppermost regolith of the lunar surface by comminuting as well as darkening and reddening. Among several maturity indices, we investigate median grain size () and optical maturity (OMAT) of the crater rim walls. Crater rim wall is the most immature place among the impact crater features because the vertical mixing process by mass-movement can enhance the gardening of regolith and the supply of immature materials in the deeper layer to the surface. More than 140 simple and complex craters were considered. Both and OMAT values of the inner rim wall initially increase as the crater size increases until ~10-20 km, then decrease. This transition crater size happens to correspond to the transition diameter from simple to complex craters. For larger craters, i.e., complex craters, it is clear that the inner rim wall of the craters formed in recent eras tend to remain fresh and become mature along with time. For the simple crater case, smaller craters are more mature, which is opposite to the case of complex craters. This is thought to be because smaller craters become flattened more quickly, thus have smaller vertical mixing in the regolith due to mass-movement. We will also discuss on the maturity indices of the crater rim walls at high latitudes as a function of the position angle to see the latitude dependence of the space weathering process.
Red pine is a popular species for making a cutting board in Korea, but easily sap stained. Heat treatment could improve its quality by darkening and equalizing the color of sap stained wood. The color change of sap stained red pine boards was investigated by heat treatment at $190^{\circ}C$. It was observed that the color of heat treated boards got darker and it made the color of sap stain vanished. A colorimeter was used to measure color indexes. It was revealed that the values of the lightness ($L^*$) and the yellowness ($b^*$) decreased as heat treatment repeated while the values of the redness ($a^*$) increased. The average of the color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) between the control and 1st heat treated boards was 16.1, which could be expressed as 'Extremely different' while that between the 1st and 2nd heat treated boards was 8.3, which could be expressed as 'Considerably different'. The fact that heat treatment equalized the color of boards was confirmed by a statistical analysis.
Tyrosinase catalyzes the rate-limiting steps in melanin biosynthesis which is involved in skin-coloring and local hyperpigmentation of human beings, and unfavorable darkening of food products, Inhibitory effects on 3,4-dihydroxy-phenylalanine (dopa) oxidase activity of tyrosinase by 594 kinds of herbal extracts prepared from herbal medicines and wild plants in Korea were estimated. Two herbal extracts prepared from radicis cortex of Morus alba and rhizoma of Curcuma longa were selected as those exhibiting potent inhibitory effects on the enzyme activity. These herbal extracts were subjected to sequential fractionations with methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and polar residue. The inhibitory effects on dopa oxidase activity of tyrosinase were shown in ethyl acetate fraction of Morus alba, and in methylene chloride fraction of Curcuma langa. The ethyl acetate fraction of Marus alba exhibited 50% of inhibition on dopa oxidase activity of tyrosinase at the concentration of 12 ${\mu}g/ml$, and methylene chloride fraction of Curcuma langa at 51 ${\mu}g/ml$.
