  • Experiments were conducted to study the interrelationships between root development of rice plant and water managements at saline paddy field where has been grown rice plant for 3 years, and to compare the root development between two fields, saline and matured. Under the conditions of non interval and two day interval flooding at saline paddy fields, root systems developed well at surface soil, however, root systems developed well and distributed evenly through surface and sub-soil at saline field where underground drainage was performed, and at matured field. Root developments at field flooded with no interval and with two-day interval were poor as compared with those of saline paddy field of underground drainage and matured field. Regardless of water managements and fields, the ratio of stunted crown roots developed after panicle fromation stage was higher than that developed at early or middle growth stage.

  • Only the habitat characteristics and breeding status of Paridae have been studied, in addition to the lack of research on Parus varius varius, there is no study on the home-range in the post fledging period. This study was analyzed the home-range size of Parus varius varius in the post fledging period. The survey was conducted in the site located in Dankook Univ. Cheonan Campus(Middle Chungcheong Province). We captured five newborn Parus varius varius using artificial nest was installed before. Radio-tracking was carried out for analysis of home-range, and MCP (Minimum Convex Polygon) was used for analysis. We analyzed 1 individual tracked 15 days (VT5) and 4 individuals which missing radio-tracking transmitter within 3 days (VT1~VT4). Home-range of VT5 gradually increased to 1,38ha, 1.42ha, 2.14ha in the order of early, middle, late period. On the other hand, moving distance was decreased to 174.558m 125.129m, 120.180m. Home-range of V1~VT4 was estimated as 0.81ha which was 75.3% share of home-range of VT5 in early period. As the result it was found that home-range is formed far apart from artificial nest that has been influenced by human being interference, thereafter gradually adapting to interference and spreading close to artificial nest. through this research, we can construct basic ecological data for protecting habitat of Parus varius varius and increasing life rate. As first radio-tracking study of Parus varius varius home-range in the post fledging period, it is expected to be useful for the future study of home-range.

  • Shigella remains to be an important enteric pathogen in this country for the present. Moreover, most of the isolates have become multiple resistant to various antibiotics which used to be drugs of choice for shigellosis. This study was made as an attempt to assess the present stage of antibiotic resistance and the incidence and transferability of R factors of Shigella. A total of one hundred and seventeen strains of Shigella isolated from patients in Seoul and provincial area between 1982 and 1983 were tested for their resistant to antimicrobial agents and transmission of R-plasmid. Antibiotic susceptibilities were determined by an agar dilution method. Muller hinton agar were used for the assay of drug resistance and tryptic soy broth were used for propagating medium for conjugation. Shigella isolated found to be one or more antibiotics were considered potential donor of R-plasmid. The following results were obtained. 1. Among 117 strains of Shigella isolated, 111 strains(94.9%) were found to be resistant to one or more drugs tested and 97.3% of these resistant strains were multiply resistant, indicating the multiply resistant strains were more than the single resistant strains. Only six strains were susceptible to all drugs tested. 2. Among 117 strains of Shigella isolated, 107 strains(91.5%) were resistant to Tetracyclin(Tc), 106 strains(90.6%) to Chloramphenicol(Cp) and Streptomycin(Sm), 97 strains(82.9%) to Ampicillin(Ap), 68 strains(58.1%) to Cephaloridine(Cr), 10 strains(8.5%) to Nalidixic acid(Na), 5 strains(4.3%) to Kanamycin(Km) and 2 strains(1.7%) to Rifampicin. No strain was resisfant to Amikacin(Ak) and Gentamicin(Gm). 3. All drug-resistant Shigella strains, except three, were multiply resistant to two or more drugs. Fifty eight strains were resistant to five drugs, followed by 26 strains resistant to dour drugs, 12 strains resistant to three drugs and 11 strains resistant to six drugs. 4. The 73% of multiply drug-resistant Shigella transferred their resistance to E. coli by conjugation and the resistance was considered to be mediated by R-plasmid. Resistance to Nalidixic acid and Rifampicin were not transferred by conjugation to recipient. As for the transferability of resistance to each seperate drug, Ap resistance was transferred with 73.2% frequence and Cm and Tc resistance were transferred with approximately 50-60% frequence whereas Sm and Cr resistance were transferred in 19.1-21.4% The other four drugs resistant failed to transfer their resistance to recipient. 5. As for the incidence and transferability of resistance to each seperate drug, the strains resistant to Tc and Cm were encountered most frequently with the rate of 91-92%, whereas transfer of Tc and Cm were low, 51-52%. The incidence of Sm resistance was very high(90.6%) but transferability of drugs resistance was much lower(25.4%). Though the incidence of Km reristance was much lower(4.3%) transferability of Km resistance was considerably higher(60%). 6. The greater the multiplicity of resistance, the greater was the likelihood that part of all of the resistance markers would be transferable.

  • Camera trapping has been used as a non-invasive survey method that minimizes anthropogenic disturbance to ecosystems. Nevertheless, it is labor-intensive and time-consuming, requiring researchers to quantify species and populations. In this study, we aimed to improve the preprocessing of camera trapping data by utilizing an object detection algorithm. Wildlife monitoring using unmanned sensor cameras was conducted in a forested urban forest and a green space on a university campus in Cheonan City, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. The collected camera trapping data were classified by a researcher to identify the occurrence of species. The data was then used to test the performance of the YOLO-X object detection algorithm for wildlife detection. The camera trapping resulted in 10,500 images of the urban forest and 51,974 images of green spaces on campus. Out of the total 62,474 images, 52,993 images (84.82%) were found to be false positives, while 9,481 images (15.18%) were found to contain wildlife. As a result of wildlife monitoring, 19 species of birds, 5 species of mammals, and 1 species of reptile were observed within the study area. In addition, there were statistically significant differences in the frequency of occurrence of the following species according to the type of urban greenery: Parus varius(t = -3.035, p < 0.01), Parus major(t = 2.112, p < 0.05), Passer montanus(t = 2.112, p < 0.05), Paradoxornis webbianus(t = 2.112, p < 0.05), Turdus hortulorum(t = -4.026, p < 0.001), and Sitta europaea(t = -2.189, p < 0.05). The detection performance of the YOLO-X model for wildlife occurrence was analyzed, and it successfully classified 94.2% of the camera trapping data. In particular, the number of true positive predictions was 7,809 images and the number of false negative predictions was 51,044 images. In this study, the object detection algorithm YOLO-X model was used to detect the presence of wildlife in the camera trapping data. In this study, the YOLO-X model was used with a filter activated to detect 10 specific animal taxa out of the 80 classes trained on the COCO dataset, without any additional training. In future studies, it is necessary to create and apply training data for key occurrence species to make the model suitable for wildlife monitoring.

  • In this study, an acidoduric Streptomyces strain was isolated and identified from acidic forest soil around Dankook University, Cheonan Campus. This isolated strain had rod-shaped, smooth, non-motile spore and the shape of spore chain was compact spiral. This structure appeared similar to the sporangium of the genus Streptosporangium but this strain proved to be a Streptomyces strain by an electron microscopic study and cell wall analysis. This strain showed a best growth on neutral medium, was also able to grow on the acidic media of pH 4.0 and pH 5.0. The color determination of this strain on various agar media and other physiological tests were carried out by ISP-methods. From these results, the isolated strain was considered to be Streptomyces mirabilis.

  • Heavy metals are one of the dangerous pollutants that threaten urban biodiversity due to their accumulation over a long period without being decomposed in vivo. Accordingly, there is a need for biological monitoring to compare accumulation concentrations in living organisms according to the degree of heavy metal exposure to evaluate heavy metal contamination in the air in urban areas. This study aims to examine the possibility of using nesting materials as heavy metal monitoring samples and determine the effects of heavy metals on Paridae. We installed 54 artificial nest boxes in the research areas that included campus green spaces (14), urban forests (11), and urban parks (29) on a university campus in Cheonan City, Chungcheongnam Province. The birds' use rate of artificial nest boxes was 11/14 (78.57%) in campus green spaces, 8/11 (72.72%) in urban forests, and 6/29 (20.68%) in urban parks. Moss materials were collected from collected nests, and the heavy metal accumulation characteristics of each type of urban green space and the effects of heavy metals on the success of fledging of Paridae were compared through heavy metal analysis. The analysis showed that the average concentrations of zinc and lead were 228.08±209.62 ㎍/dry g and 17.67 ± 6.72 ㎍/dry g, respectively. There was no significant difference in zinc concentration for each type of urban green space (Kruskal-Wallis test, p-value=0.28), but lead concentration showed a significant difference (Kruskal-Wallis test, p<0.05*). Of the 21 Paridae, nests analyzed for heavy metals, fledging of birds was observed in 11 nests (52.38%). Fledging of birds observed in each urban green space type was 7 campus green spaces (77.78%), 6 in urban forests (85.71%), and 1 in urban park (20%), mainly in urban forests and green spaces on campus. Heavy metal concentrations were compared to check the effect of heavy metal accumulation on the successful fledging of Paridae, but there was no statistically significant difference (Zn: W=44, p-value=0.74, Pb: t=0.64676, df =7.2422, p-value=0.54). This study is a basic study using the nesting materials of Paridae as heavy metal monitoring samples, and it is determined that it can be used as basic data for non-invasive biological monitoring.
