  • The emission of greenhouse gases mainly carbon dioxide and methane is the result of rapid industrialization to meet the demands of ever-growing population. This has resulted in an increase of global temperature which in turn is responsible for severe environmental, social, ecological and economic losses, commonly known as to as 'climate change'. This study attempts to highlight the impacts of climate change mainly focussing on water contamination, sanitation and open defecation in India. The requirement for the instantaneous employment of environment friendly technologies along with improved sanitary system has been discussed. Various other issues which are also linked to climate change that need further management like managing water resources, deterioration in human health, economic losses, modification and successful implementation of policies have been pointed out. Furthermore, stress has been made for the urgent adaptation and rethinking for making strategies along with the involvement of women in order to cop up challenges offered by climate change.

  • The effect of precursor concentration on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of $TiO_2$nano-flowers was investigated in this study. An increase in crystallite size was observed with an increase in the concentration of the precursor (titanium butoxide). The FE-SEM micrographs of the as-prepared samples show a three-dimensional flower-like morphology. The flowers consist of several nanorods coming out of a single core and have very sharp edges. Also, the variation in the aspect ratio of the nanostructure was observed with the concentration of the precursor. The photocatalytic properties of the samples show that the sample that has a high aspect ratio (AR~9) has a much better photocatalytic activity compared to the nano-crystal with a low aspect ratio (AR~6.1). It is believed that the excellent photocatalytic performance and short time synthesis of $TiO_2$nano-flowers using the microwave hydrothermal method can have potential applications in the field of photocatalysis.

  • This study was performed to elucidate the histopathologic distribution of immunoglobulins, particularly IgA, IgG and IgM in the periapical lesions, including 22 periapical granulomas and 18 periapical cysts. The immunoperoxidase staining method using reagents manufactured and supplied by Danish DAKO company was employed in this study. In comparison with the immunohistochemical methods, this method was proved to be reliable and convinient one to detect immunoglobulins in the tissue. The following results were obtained: 1. In the 22 periapical granulomas, IgG was found in 20 cases (90.9%), IgA in 16 cases (72.7%) and IgM in 19 cases (86.3%). 2. In the 18 periapical cysts, IgG was found in 16 cases (88.8%), IgA in 13 cases (72.2%) and IgM in 15 cases (83.3%). 3. The distribution of immunoglobulins both in periapical granulomas and periapical cysts was in great diversity according to the lesion and area. 4. More immunoglobulins were found in the exudative area with moderate or severe infiltrations of plasma cells and lymphocytes and less concentration of immunoglobulins were seen in the area with leukocytes infiltration and tissue destruction. 5. The area with collagenolysis and reparative activity contained more abundant IgG and IgM than IgA in periapical granulomas. 6. IgG was dominant in the granulomatous connective tissue and immunoglobulins were not easily found in the fibrous capsule in periapical cysts.

  • The washing efficiency of two types of washing machine- drum(drum washing) and drum using steam jet system(steam drum washing) was studied. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the performance of new steam drum washing. The relationship between washing temperature and washing efficiency(reflectance(%)) by soil removal, and that between washing temperature and electric energy consumption, Fabric damage evaluated by Danish wear method, Fabric shrinkage(%) during laundering were investigated, and compared with those in drum washing machine. Washing efficiency of steam drum washing according to washing temperature is better than that of drum washing. Electric energy consumption and fabric damage in steam drum washing are lower than those of drum washing. Fabric damage increased as washing temperature increased. Shrinkage of fabrics in steam drum washing and drum washing are about same. Therefore, we assumed that in the case of steam drum washing using steam jet system, washing efficiency remarkably increased, and fabric damage decreased, even with a lot of saving in given electric energy and water used.

  • In this study, a 3D numerical model was used to predict nonlinear wave forces on a cylindrical pile installed in a shallow water region. The model was based on solving the viscous and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for a two-phase flow (water and air) model and the volume of fluid method for treating the free surface of water. A new application was developed based on the cut-cell method to allow easy installation of complicated obstacles (e.g., bottom geometry and cylindrical pile) in a computational domain. Free-surface elevation, water particle velocities, and inline wave forces were calculated, and the results show good agreement with experimental data obtained by the Danish Hydraulic Institute. The simulation results revealed that the proposed model can, without the use of empirical formulas (i.e., Morison equation) and additional wave analysis models, reliably predict non-linear wave forces on an offshore wind turbine foundation installed in a shallow water region.

  • The importance of power system stability has been emphasized with an increase of wind energy penetration in the power system. Accordingly, the guarantee on various control capabilities, including active and reactive power control of wind farms, was regarded as the most important aspect for the connection to the grid. To control the wind farm active power, the wind farm controller was introduced. The wind farm controller decides the power set points for each wind turbine generating unit and each wind turbine generating unit controls its power according to the set points from the wind farm controller. Therefore, co-relationship between wind farm controller and wind turbine controllers are significantly important. This paper proposes some control methods of wind farm active power control based on modified wind turbine control for power system stability and structures to connect wind turbine controllers to wind farm controller. Besides, this paper contributes to development of control algorithm considering not only electrical components but also mechanical components. The proposed contributions were verified by full simulation including power electronics and turbulent wind speed. The scenario refers to the active power control regulations of the Eltra and Elkraft system in Denmark.

  • This paper describes wind investigations for the Leaning Tower of Pisa which were conducted as part of an overall evaluation of its behaviour. Normally a short, stiff and heavy building would not be a candidate for detailed wind analyses. However, because of extremely high soil pressures developed from its inclination, there has been increasing concern that environmental loading such as wind actions could combine with existing conditions to cause the collapse of the tower. The studies involved wind assessment at the site as a function of wind direction, analysis of historical wind data to determine extreme wind probabilities of occurrence, estimation of structural properties, analytical and boundary layer wind tunnel investigations of wind loads and evaluation of the response with special concern for loads in the direction of inclination of the tower and significant wake effects from the neighboring cathedral for critical wind directions. The conclusions discuss the role of wind on structural safety, the precision of results attained and possible future studies involving field measurements aimed at validating or improving the analytical and boundary layer wind tunnel based assessments.

  • The effect of microencapsulation on previously isolated Lactobacillus delbrueckii 94/L4 as starter culture for yogurt, and Lactobacillus casei 97/L3 as a probiotic candidate was investigated. Preliminary results showed that L. delbrueckii 94/L4 exhibited tolerance to bile, unlike L. casei 97/L3. Freeze drying significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the viability of both isolates by log 0.71-2.70. Although microencapsulation preserved the viability of L. casei 97/L3 cells exposed to simulated gastrointestinal tract conditions for 120 min, it did not impart significant (p < 0.05) protection against loss of viability during the first 30 min of exposure. Conversely, microencapsulated L. delbrueckii 94/L4 with the addition of Streptococcus thermophilus 24/S1 as starter culture was successfully incorporated into milk to form yogurt, yielding a significantly (p < 0.05) improved product quality.
