  • Mg alloy is the lightest material of structural materials and is noticed for lightweight automotive parts because of excellent castability, superior ductility and damping capacity than Al alloy. But Mg Alloy is poor corrosion resistance and high temperature creep properties. In this study, Mg Matrix Composites were fabricated by squeeze casting method to improve high temperature creep properties and damping capacity. Hybrid Mg composites reinforced with Alborex, graphite particle, and SiCp was improved creep properties and damping capacity compared with Mg alloy. Compared to the length ($9\mu\textrm{m}, 27\mu\textrm{m}, 45\mu\textrm{m} etc.$), Hybrid Mg composites reinforced with SiCp, one of the most superior of the length and Alborex were more superior than those reinforced with graphite particle and Alborex in mechanical properties, creep characteristics, and damping capacity, etc.

  • We have reported that an Fe-17wt%Mn alloy exhibits the highest damping capacity in the Fe-Mn binary system. In the present work, the effects of copper content on the damping capacity, atmospheric corrosion and mechanical properties were studied. The damping capacities were measured at room temperature for the air cooled Fe-17wt%Mn alloy having copper content from 0.1wt% to 1.1wt%. The damping capacity of the Fe-17wt %Mn alloy was decreased with increasing copper content. However, the addition of Copper was found to improve mechanical properties and atmospheric corrosion resistance. These mechanical properties were attributed to the formation of stress-induced martensite during tensile test.

  • In this work, the strain-amplitude independent and strain-amplitude dependent damping capacities of Mg-5%Sn alloy have been investigated as a function of its age-hardening response. The hardness increased with an increase in aging time, reached a peak value after 48 h, and then it gradually decreased. The damping capacities of the Mg-5%Sn alloy exhibited a decreasing tendency in the order of solution-treated, under-aged, peakaged, and over-aged states in the strain-amplitude dependent region, whereas they increased continuously with aging time in the strain-amplitude independent region. The microstructural examination during aging revealed that the lower concentration of Sn solutes in the α-(Mg) matrix and the lower density of the Mg2Sn precipitate particles may well be the crucial factors for better damping values in the strain-amplitude independent and strain-amplitude dependent regions, respectively.

  • Degradation and recovery of damping capacity in a Cu-65%Mn alloy have been studied. When the alloy was isothermally aged at $400^{\circ}C$, the highest damping capacity was observed after aging for 4 hours. In case when the alloy aged at $400^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours was maintained at $100^{\circ}C$, the damping capacity gradually decreased with time. The microstructural observations showed that the formation of subdomains and ${\alpha}$-Mn precipitates are responsible for the degradation of damping capacity. When the degraded specimen was reheated at $250^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes, the damping capacity was recovered considerably owing to the redistribution of impurity atoms, the extinction of subdomains and the release of damping sources from ${\alpha}$-Mn precipitates during the repeated transformation, fcc${\leftrightarrow}$fct.

  • This study investigates the effect of thermo-mechanical treatment on the damping capacity of the Fe-20Mn-12Cr-3Ni-3Si alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation. Dislocation, ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ are formed, and the grain size is refined by deformation and thermo-mechanical treatment. With an increasing number cycles in the thermo-mechanical treatment, the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ increases and then decreases, whereas dislocation and ${\alpha}^{\prime}-martensite$ increases, and the grain size is refined. In thermo-mechanical treated specimens with five cycles, more than 10 % of the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ and less than 3 % of the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}-martensite$ are attained. Damping capacity decreases by thermo-mechanical treatment and with an increasing number of cycles of thermo-mechanical treatment, and this result shows an opposite tendency for general metal with deformation induced martensite transformation. The damping capacity of the thermo-mechanical treated damping alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation greatly affect the formation of dislocation, grain refining and ${\alpha}^{\prime}-martensite$ and then ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ formation by thermo-mechanical treatment.

  • Influences of aluminum carbide ($Al_4C_3$) addition on microstructure and damping capacity of Mg-3%Al casting alloy have been investigated based on experimental results of optical micrography, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry analysis and damping capacity measurement at RT. The addition of $Al_4C_3$ particles results in an efficient grain refinement. The damping capacity shows an increasing tendency with an increase in $Al_4C_3$ content. The damping value associated with $Al_4C_3$ particles is linearly dependent on the volume fraction of $Al_4C_3$ particles to the 2/3 power, $f_{2/3}$, which corresponds to the total surface area of the particles.

  • Changes in microstructure and damping capacity with aging time for solutionized Mg-Al alloy have been investigated. Discontinuous ${\beta}\;(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ precipitates form along the primary grain boundaries, the amount of which increases as the aging time increases. The hardness of the matrix with respect to aging time shows a typical "S" shape, indicating a generation of fine continuous precipitates in the matrix during the aging. The peak level of damping capacity is obtained after 1 hour of aging, over which the damping capacity becomes deteriorated continuously. The formation of optimum density of continuous ${\beta}$ precipitates with fine morphology which would act as pinning points for dislocation lines, might be responsible for the improvement of damping capacity.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of grain size on the damping capacity of the Fe-26Mn-4Co-2Al damping alloy. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ were formed by cold working, and these martensites were formed with a specific direction and surface relief. With an increase in grain size, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ increased by decrement the austenite phase stability. This volume fraction more rapidly increased in cold-rolled specimen than in the specimen that was not cold-rolled. The damping capacity also increased more with the augmentation an increased grain size and more rapidly increased in cold-rolled specimen than in the specimen that was not cold rolled. The effect of grain size on the damping capacity was larger in the cold-rolled specimen than the specimen that was not cold-rolled. Damping capacity linearly increased with an increase in volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$. Thus, the damping capacity was affected by the ${\varepsilon}-martensite$.

  • In the resent years, as the research and the development of micro and precision machinery become active, the interest of micro actuators using SMA(Shape Memory Alloy) has been increased. But, no detailed researches between the thermo-dynamic property in Nitinol alloy have been done yet. In this study, the thermal property of high temperature Nitinol shape memory alloy were evaluated using differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The structure property was investigated using X-ray diffraction(XRD). A dynamic mechanical analyzer(DMA) with three point bending mode was used to study storage and loss modulus of shape memory alloy according to the thirteen frequencies in the temperature range between 30 and $200^{\circ}C$. The effects of the temperature heating/cooling rate, the frequency on the damping capacity have been systematically investigated. Such a frequency and temperature changes also influenced significantly to the damping behavior of the shape memory alloy. It was also found that Nitinol exhibited high damping capacity during phase transformation.
