  • This study offers a design procedure of optimum cable damper for multi-mode vibration control with nonlinear damper and also investigate the relation between mode and amplitude dependency. The proposed multi-mode damping index, which is defined as a energy loss ratio of cable potential, is a main component of optimization problem of optimum nonlinear damper. In order to include the amplitude dependency of nonlinear damper, it is assumed to exist three kinds of multi-mode patterns such as ambient vibration, support excitation and rain-win induced vibration. The optimum damper exponent depends on amplitude patterns. In case of ambient vibration, optimum factor is less than 0.5. In case of support excitation or rain-wind induced vibration is between 0.5 and 1.0. In this study, the effects of cable sag and inclination angle are included in the asymptotic design equation of damped cable structures.

  • In diesel engines, it is inevitable that the torsional vibration is produced by the fluctuation of engine torque. Therefore, if the occurence of torsional vibration is confirmed in the design stage or the torsional vibration is observed on the bed of test run, it is necessary to establish some preventive measures to avoid dangerous conditions. Major preventive measures are as follows : 1. Changing the natural frequency of shaft system. 2. Repressing the vibration amplitude by the damping energy. 3. Counterbalancing the exciting torque by the resistant torque. 4. Counterbalacing the harmonic component of exciting energy. In above methos, the damper is the last measure to be used for controlling the torsional vibration. In this thesis, the design of viscous damper that absorbs the exciting energy is investigated and a number of problems associated with the design of viscous damper are treated and a computer pregram for the process of damper design is developed. A viscous damper for a high speed diesel engine is designed and its effect is simulated by the author's computer program.

  • This paper presents design and performance evaluation of magnetorheological(MR) damper for integrated isolation mount. The MR damper needs two functions for the integrated isolation mount. The one is vibration absorption and the other is isolation of vibration transmission. For vibration absorption, the MR damper requires wide damping force range. And for isolation of vibration transmission, the friction of MR damper needs to be eliminated. In order to achieve this goal, a novel type of MR damper is originally designed in this work. Subsequently, the MR damper is mathematically modeled and its damping force characteristics are evaluated. In addition, the vibration control performance of the MR damper associated with the stage mass is evaluated. From the result, this paper evaluates the performance of MR damper for integrated isolation mount.

  • Using the finite element method and Taguchi's design technique, the displacement in vertical direction, von Mises stress, and strain energy of the corrugation damper have been analyzed as functions of the extruded length and the thickness of the corrugation damper, and the upper and lower corner radii of the damper. The optimized profile design elements of a corrugation damper are very important for increasing a strain energy absorption capacity of a helmet structure, which is attacked by impulsive external forces. In this study, the optimized design data based on the Taguchi's method was computed as a corrugation damper length of L = 20 mm, a damper thickness of t = 2 mm, the upper corner radius of $R_1=4\;mm$, and the lower corner radius of $R_2=3\;mm$. The optimized design parameters of a corrugation damper indicated that the thickness and extruded length of a corrugation damper may affect to increase the strain energy, which absorbs the impact forces of the helmet.

  • Conditions of stiffness for a steel spring torsional vibration damper are difficult and ambiguous. Nevertheless correct estimation of stiffness is essential and important in the damper design for the damper to activate properly in the field. In this paper, to build up the estimation method of steel spring torsional vibration damper a miniaturized model was developed for modelling between a spring and inner star of the damper. The method obtained from the results through the experiment and analysis of it was applied to the prototype torsional damper.

  • This paper is presented to determine the optimal parameters of squeeze film damper using an enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA). The damper design parameters are the radius, length and radial clearance of the damper. The objective function is minimization of a transmitted load between bearing and foundation at the operating and critical speeds of a flexible rotor. The present algorithm was the synthesis of a genetic algorithm with simplex method for a local concentrate search. This hybrid algorithm is not only faster than the standard genetic algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution and can find both the global and local optimum solution. The numerical example is presented that illustrated the effectiveness of enhanced genetic algorithm for the optimal design of the squeeze film damper for reducing transmitted load.

  • A damper is a hydraulic device designed to absorb or eliminate shock impulses which is acting on the sprung mass of vehicle. It converting the kinetic energy of the shock into another form of energy, typically heat. In a vehicle, a damper reduce vibration of car, leading to improved ride comfort and running stability. Therefore, a damper is one of the most important components in a vehicle suspension system. Conventionally, the design process of vehicle suspensions has been based on trial and error approaches, where designers iteratively change the values of the design variables and reanalyze the system until acceptable design criteria are achieved. Therefore, the ability to tune a damper properly without trial and error is of great interest in suspension system design to reduce time and effort. For this reason, a many previous researches have been done on modeling and simulation of the damper. In this paper, we have conducted optimal design process to find optimal design parameters of damping force which minimize a acceleration of sprung mass for a given suspension system using genetic algorithm.

  • In this inquisition, a passive damper namely Stockbridge Damper (SBD) has been introduced to the field of vibration control of Offshore Wind Turbine (OWT) to reduce the earthquake excitations. The dynamic responses of the structure have been analyzed for three recorded earthquakes and the responses have been assessed. To find an optimum SBD, the parameters of damper have been optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken Design (BBD) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The influence of the design variables of SBD such as the diameter of messenger cable, the length of messenger cable and logarithmic decrement of the damping has been investigated through response variables such as maximum displacement, RMS displacement and frequency amplitude of structure under an artificially generated white noise. After that, the structure with optimized and non-optimized damper has been analyzed with under the same earthquakes. Moreover, the comparative results show that the structure with optimized damper is 11.78%, 18.71%, 11.6% and 7.77%, 7.01%, 10.23% more effective than the structure with non-optimized damper with respect to the displacement and frequency response under the earthquakes. The results show that the SBD can obviously affect the characteristics of the vibration of the OWT and RSM based on BBD and PSO approach can provide an optimum damper.

  • A torsional damper is generally used to reduce the torsional vibration which occurs at a crankshaft of a multi-cylinder high speed diesel engine. Vibration amplitude should be estimate by the appropriate simulation model to determine the optimum specifications of damper. In this paper a new method which was based on the random tabu search method(RTSM) would be introduced for the viscous damper design to optimize the damping performance. The result was ascertained by comparing with conventional rubber damper.
