Since typhoon is a critical meteorological disaster, some advanced countries have developed typhoon damage prediction models. However, although South Korea is vulnerable to typhoons, there is still shortage of study in typhoon damage prediction model reflecting the vulnerability of domestic building and features of disaster. Moreover, many studies have been only focused on the characteristics and typhoon and regional characteristics without various influencing factors. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze typhoon damage by path and develop to prediction model for building damage ratio by using multiple regression analysis. This study classifies the building damages by typhoon paths to identify influencing factors then the correlation analysis is conducted between building damage ratio and their factors. In addition, a multiple regression analysis is applied to develop a typhoon damage prediction model. Four categories; typhoon information, geography, construction environment, and socio-economy, are used as the independent variables. The results of this study will be used as fundamental material for the typhoon damage prediction model development of South Korea.

The paper presents a signal-based damage detection algorithm of ARX model using dynamic acceleration data. An ARX model correlates acceleration data measured at two locations in a structure by considering those two sets of data as input and output signals. For detecting damage, the error between the measured data and the predicted response from the defined ARX model is computed in time and used for a statistical evaluation. A normal distribution function from the error in time is constructed and its statistical characteristic values are used for the evaluation of damage. By comparing the normal distribution functions before and after damage, three different types of damage indices are proposed. The efficiency and limitation of the proposed algorithm with the statistical evaluation of damage indices have been examined and discussed through laboratory experiments.
Concrete contains numerous microcracks at initially poured. The growth and propagation of
nicrockacsk are believed tc finally incur the faiure of concrete. These processings are understood
as a damage. Damage IS represented as a second-order tensor and crack is treated as a con
tinuum phenomenon. In this paper, damage is characterized through the effective stress concept
together with the hypothesis of elastic energy equivalence, and damage evolution law and
constitutive equation of a damage model are derived by using the Helmholtz frte eriergy and the
dissipation potential by means of the thermodynamic principles. The constitutive equation of the
model includes the effects of elasticity, anisotropic damage and plasticity of concrete. There are
two effective tangent stiffness tensors in this model : one is for elastic-darnage and the other for
plastic damage. For the verification of the model, finite element analysis was performed for the
analysis of concrete subjec:t to uniaxial and biaxial loading and the results obtained were
compared with test results.

A robust damage assessment technique is presented such that the location and severity of damage in structures can be identified using measured modal data. In order to identify the damage efficiently, the concept of design of experiment using orthogonal array is used for screening the main effects of each parameter which corresponds to possible damage location in FE model. Then, Taguchi method, which has been widely used for robust design in industry, is applied to parameter updating in analytical FE model. The numerical simulations of a truss structure show that damages in structure can be located from updated parameters.

This paper presents the fatigue behavior of composite materials with impact-induced damage under 2 level block loading. For this purpose, the 2 level block loading fatigue tests were performed on the impacted composite laminate. The fatigue life of the laminate under the block loading is greatly influenced by the impact damage; the effect of impact damage can be characterized by the present impact damage parameter. Based on this parameter, the model is developed to predict the fatigue life under block loading and the results by this model agree well with experimental results regardless of applied impact energy. Also, stochastic model is established to describe the variation of cumulative damage behavior and fatigue life due to the material nonhomogeneity.
The cells of metazoans respond to DNA damage by either arresting their cell cycle in order to repair the DNA, or by undergoing apoptosis. This response is highly conserved across species, and many of the genes involved in this DNA damage response have been shown to be inactivated in human cancers. This suggests the importance of DNA damage response with regard to the prevention of cancer. The DNA damage checkpoint responses vary greatly depending on the developmental context, cell type, gene expression profile, and the degree and nature of the DNA lesions. More valuable information can be obtained from studies utilizing whole organisms in which the molecular basis of development has been well established, such as Drosophila. Since the discovery of the Drosophila p53 orthologue, various aspects of DNA damage responses have been studied in Drosophila. In this review, I will summarize the current knowledge on the DNA damage checkpoint response in Drosophila. With the ease of genetic, cellular, and cytological approaches, Drosophila will become an increasingly valuable model organism for the study of mechanisms inherent to cancer formation associated with defects in the DNA damage pathway.
In this research a theoretical and numerical study on a bridge damage detection procedure is presented based on vibration measurements collected from a set of accelerometers. This method, referred to as "Adjoint Variable Method", is a sensitivity-based finite element model updating method. The approach relies on minimizing a penalty function, which usually consists of the errors between the measured quantities and the corresponding predictions attained from the model. Moving mass is an interactive model and includes inertia effects between the model and mass. This interactive model is a time varying system and the proposed method is capable of detecting damage in this variable system. Robustness of the proposed method is illustrated by correct detection of the location and extension of predetermined single, multiple and random damages in all ranges of speed and mass ratio of moving vehicle. A comparative study on common sensitivity and the proposed method confirms its efficiency and performance improvement in sensitivity-based damage detection methods. In addition various possible sources of error, including the effects of measurement noise and initial assumption error in stability of method are also discussed.
Heavy snow is a natural disaster that causes serious economic damage. Since snowfall has been increasing recently, there is a need for measures against heavy snowfall. In order to make a policy decision on heavy snowfall, it is necessary to estimate the precise amount of damage by heavy snowfall. The direct damage of the heavy snow is severe, however the indirect damage caused by the road congestion and the urban dysfunction is also serious. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate indirect damage of snowfall. The purpose of this study is to estimate the effects on the regional economy from the limitation in traffic logistics caused by heavy snow using the transport demand model and inoperability input-output Model. The result shows that the amount of production loss caused by the heavy snow is KRW 2,460 billion per year and if the period of snowfall removal is shortened by one day or two days, it could be reduced to KRW 1,219 or 2,787 billion in production loss.

In this study, a fatigue damage estimation for an ice-going vessel navigating through broken ice fields was carried out. A numerical model to simulate the interaction between ice and structure developed using the finite element method was introduced. Time series of stresses calculated by the proposed model and the corresponding fatigue analysis results are presented. The numerical model enables the long time analysis through an efficient interaction model, the application of the periodic media analysis and the convolution integral, and it allows the stress time history to be extracted directly using the finite element method. To describe the probability distribution of stress amplitudes, the 2-parameter Weibull model was applied to the calculated stress time history, and the fatigue damage was calculated using the Palmgren-Miner rule. Finally, the fatigue damage considering the ice conditions of the Baltic Sea was calculated using the proposed method and LR method, and the results were compared to each other.

In order to reasonably predict damage extents of naval ships under in-compartment explosion (INCEX) loads, two conditions should be fulfilled in terms of accurate INCEX load generation and fracture estimation. This paper seeks to predict damage extents of various naval ships by applying the CONWEP model to generate INCEX loads, combined with the Hosford-Coulomb (HC) and localized necking (LN) fracture model. This study selected a naval ship with a 2,000-ton displacement, using associated specifications collected from references. The CONWEP model that is embedded in a commercial finite element analysis software ABAQUS/Explicit was used for INCEX load generation. The combined HC-LN model was used to simulate fracture initiation and propagation. The permanent failures with some structural fractures occurred where at the locations closest to the explosion source points in case of the near field explosions, while, some significant fractures were observed in way of the interfaces between bulkheads and curtain plates under far field explosion. A large thickness difference would lead to those interface failures. It is expected that the findings of this study enhances the vulnerability design of naval ships, enabling more accurate predictions of damage extents under INCEX loads.
