  • In this paper described is the basic concept of the Guideline for Post-earthquake Damage Assessment of RC buildings, revised in 2001, in Japan. This paper discusses the damage rating procedures based on the residual seismic capacity index R, the ratio of residual seismic capacity to the original capacity, that is consistent with the Japanese Standard for Seismic Evaluation of Existing RC Buildings, and their validity through calibration with observed damage due to the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu (Kobe) earthquake. Good agreement between the residual seismic capacity ratio and damage levels was observed.

  • The recently enacted detailed guidelines on the performance evaluation of track facilities presented the necessary requirements regarding the evaluation procedures and implementation methods of track performance evaluation. However, the grade of rail surface damage is determined by external inspection (visual inspection), and there is no choice but to rely only on qualitative evaluation based on the subjective judgment of the inspector. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to develop a diagnostic application that can diagnose rail internal defects using rail surface damage. In the field investigation, rail surface damage was investigated and patterns were analyzed. Additionally, in the indoor test, SEM testing was used to construct image data of rail internal damage, and crack length, depth, and angle were quantified. In this study, a deep learning model (Fast R-CNN) using image data constructed from field surveys and indoor tests was applied to the application. A rail surface damage diagnosis application (App) using a deep learning model that can be used on smart devices was developed. We developed a smart diagnosis system for rail surface damage that can be used in future track diagnosis and performance evaluation work.

  • This paper described analysis of acoustic emission parameter for the damage evaluation of type II vehicle fuel tank during fracture test. The observation of Kaiser effect, Felicity effect and creep effect is the means of damage evaluation method. It is possible to evaluate tank damage by the ratio of hit of over 60 dB and total hit. Damage mechanism of pressure tank can be estimated by analysis of average rise time, average amplitude.

  • It is a significant issue for several country including Korea, where the natural and the weather conditions are severe, to keep the safety against disasters which occur frequently every year, especially in urban region crowded with population. In order to implement suitable and effective measures against various disasters in such area, development of method for evaluation of disaster prevention performance based on various disaster risks and effective disaster damage mitigation technologies is independable. In this paper, methods for hazard evaluation, vulnerability evaluation and loss evaluation, and damage technologies are proposed targetting man-made disaster and natural one like flood, earthquake and tsunami and so on. The method proposed in this paper is based on the research of USA and Japan for man-made disaster and natural disaster. The proposed method will be developed in detail in four years during research period funded by government.

A Study of Strength of Damaged Ship Structures Using Damage Simulator (Damage simulator를 이용한 선박의 손상강도에 관한 연구)

  • A damage analysis simulator, which is applicable for evaluating the residual strength of damaged ship, was developed in this paper. For this process, CDM (Continuum Damage Mechanics) approach has been implemented to the simulator by virtue of the numerical technique for evaluation of crack initiation and/or enlargement. A damage calculation program has been linked with a commercial finite element analysis code (NASTRAN) and a ultimate strength evaluation program (LSAP) in order to assess residual strength of damaged ship. As a results of series calculation for the frigate model, giving the quantitative structural damage to the ultimate strength evaluation, a residual strength with damage is predicted to be at least 70 percentage lower than the case of intact condition. It was found that the proposed technique can be used as a design support tool in the field of simulation based ship design.

  • This study proposes a new methodology of earthquake damage evaluation for R/C Buildings combined with shear and flexural failure systems, based on non-linear required strength spectrum. Part I shows a concept of methodology of earthquake damage evaluation, which is estimated on the basis of system ductility, non-linear required strength spectrum and remaining seismic capacity ratio.

  • In this study, the earthquake damage evaluation of a R/C frame building is carried out based on the method proposed in Part I. Using the proposed method, the earthquake damage of building system based on non-linear required strength spectrum can be effectively evaluated without using the detailed seismic evaluation methods, including non-linear dynamic analyses, capacity spectrum method, etc.

  • Evaluation of rolling contact fatigue damage as well as material development for roll of rolling mill is being studied until quite recently. In this paper, a focus has been imposed on evaluating the rolling contact fatigue damage. In order for this, the accumulating process of rolling contact damage using the ferritic, pearlitic and bainitic DCI has been analyzed by X-ray diffraction technique. The main finds are; 1) The graphite in DCI is considered to be a cause of interfering in the redistribution of stress. Eventually, it results in the branching of crack. 2) The evaluation of rolling contact fatigue damage can be estimated in terms of the change of residual stress and/or a half-value breadth on surface during rolling contact.

  • This paper presents a Level III damage evaluation methodology, which simultaneously, identifies the location, the extent, and the severity of stiffness damage in deep beams. Deep beams are structural elements with relatively high aspect (depth-to-length) ratios whose response are no longer based on the simplified Euler-Bernoulli theory. The proposed methodology is developed on the bases of the force-displacement relations of the Timoshenko beam theory and the concept of invariant stress resultants, which states that the net internal force existing at any cross-section of the beam is not affected by the inflicted damage, provided that the external loadings in the undamaged and damaged beams are identical. Irrespective of the aspect ratios, local changes in both the flexural and the shear stiffnesses of beam-type structures may be detected using the approach presented in this paper.

  • Fatigue evaluations for the rotor blades of commercial or military rotorcraft have been carried out using the safe life concept since 1950s. Particularly, in the case of a rotor blade made of a composite material, a highly reliable fatigue life could be predicted by evaluation the cumulative damage using combination of fatigue life curve and load spectrum. However, there is a limit in adequately evaluating the strength reducing phenomena caused by damages or defects generated during the manufacturing process or impact damage induced by operational usages, using only the safe life concept. In this study, the fatigue evaluation process based on the damage tolerance concept is described and illustrated by means of successful application to substantiate the retirement time of composite rotor blades.
