한랭지역(강원권)에서의 도로터널 라이닝부 피해 현황 연구 (A Study on Current Extent of Damage of Road Tunnel Lining in Cold Regions (Gangwon-do))

  • 국내 한랭지역(강원권)의 경우 낮은 연평균 기온에 의한 도로터널 라이닝 내구성에 문제가 발생하게 된다. 이에 따라 라이닝에 균열, 망상균열, 박락, 박리, 누수 등의 문제가 발생하며, 해마다 경제적 손실 및 인명피해가 증가하고 있는 실정이다. 하지만 국내에서는 기온에 따른 도로터널 라이닝의 피해에 대한 연구는 미비한 상태이다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 한랭지(강원권) 터널 70개를 조사함으로써 현재 한랭지역의 피해현황을 분석하였고, 같은 한랭지역 중 비교적 따뜻한 기온을 가지는 강릉 지역과 기온이 낮은 홍천 지역의 터널 라이닝 피해를 비교함으로써 기온이 도로터널 라이닝에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다.

Improvement of Out-of-Plane Impact Damage Resistance of CFRP Due to Through-the-Thickness Stitching

  • The present study investigated, both experimentally and numerically, the improvement of low-velocity impact damage resistance of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates due to through-the-thickness stitching. First, we conducted drop-weight impact tests for stitched and unstitched laminates. The results of damage inspection confirmed that stitching did improve the impact damage resistance, and revealed that the improvement effect became greater as the impact energy increased. Moreover, the stitching affected the through-the-thickness damage distribution. Next, we performed FEM analysis and calculated the energy release rate of the delamination crack using the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT). The numerical results revealed that the stitching affected the through-the-thickness damage distribution because the stitch threads had a marked effect on decreasing both the modes I and II energy release rate around the bottom of the laminate. Comparison of the results for models that contained delaminations of various sizes revealed that the energy release rate became lower as delamination size increased; therefore the stitching improved the impact resistance more effectively when the impact energy was higher.

Effects of consecutive earthquakes on increased damage and response of reinforced concrete structures

  • A large main shock may consist of numerous aftershocks with a short period. The aftershocks induced by a large main shock can cause the collapse of a structure that has been already damaged by the preceding main shock. These aftershocks are important factors in structural damages. Furthermore, despite what is often assumed in seismic design codes, earthquakes do not usually occur as a single event, but as a series of strong aftershocks and even fore shocks. For this reason, this study investigates the effect and potential of consecutive earthquakes on the response and behavior of concrete structures. At first, six moment resisting concrete frames with 3, 5, 7, 10, 12 and 15 stories are designed and analyzed under two different records with seismic sequences from real and artificial cases. The damage states of the model frames were then measured by the Park and Ang's damage index. From the results of this investigation, it is observed that the sequences of ground motions can almost double the accumulated damage and increased response of structures. Therefore, it is certainly insufficient to ignore this effect in the design procedure of structures. Also, the use of artificial seismic sequences as design earthquake can lead to non-conservative prediction of behavior and damage of structures under real seismic sequences.

수리시설개보수사업이 호우피해에 미치는 효과 분석 (A Study on Effect of Repair and Improvement for Irrigation Facilities on Heavy Rain Damage)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the factors related to the heavy rain damage and to identify effect of repair and improvement for irrigation facilities on heavy rain damages. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the imbalance of precipitation became worse over time from using the coefficient of variation. Second, the analysis using Spearman correlation coefficient shows positive relationship between heavy rain damage amount and precipitation amount, and negative correlation between heavy rain damage amount and repair and improvement for irrigation facilities cost. Third, the analysis of the panel regression model shows that the negative impact of the repair and improvement for irrigation facilities cost on the heavy rain damage, which means that the increase of the repair and improvement for irrigation facilities cost can reduce the heavy rain damage.

Antioxidative and Probiotic Properties of Lactobacillus gasseri NLRI-312 Isolated from Korean Infant Feces

  • We selected a Lactobacillus spp. from Korean healthy infant feces based upon their antioxidant activity. This strain was identified as Lactobacillus gasseri by 16S rDNA sequencing, and named Lactobacillus gasseri NLRI-312. In the present study, we investigate the protective effect of this strain on the $H_2O_2$ induced damage to cellular membrane lipid and DNA in Jurkat cells. To estimate the extent of cellular lipid peroxidation inhibition, MDA (malondialdehyde) was measured, and DNA damage was tested by the comet assay. We also examined probiotic properties including tolerance to acid and bile, antibiotic resistance. From the results obtained, the supplementation of Jurkat cells with NLRI-312 decreased in DNA damage, while no effect was shown on MDA decrease. In probiotic properties, this strain was resistance to both acid and bile, showed considerably higher survival when incubated in pH 2 or 1% bile salts (w/v). We concluded that the NLRI-312 could be used as potential probiotic bacteria, with the effect of reducing DNA damage induced by $H_2O_2$.

연속발진 레이저에 의한 공기 유동에 노출된 유리섬유 강화 플라스틱 손상효과 (Damage Effect on Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics under Airflow by a Continuous Wave Laser)

  • We analyzed the damage effect on Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics(GFRP) under air flow by irradiation of continuous wave near-IR laser. Damage process and temporal temperature distribution were demonstrated and material characteristics were observed with laser intensity, surface flow speed and angle. Surface temperature on GFRP rapidly increased with laser intensity, and the damaged pattern was different with flow characteristics. In case of no flow, penetration on GFRP by burning and flame generation after laser irradiation was appeared at once. GFRP was penetrated by the heat generated from resin ignition. In case of laser irradiation under flow, a flame generated after burning extinguished at once by flow and penetration pattern on GFRP were differently shown with flow angle. From the results, we presented the damage process and its mechanism.

Toxicity Monitoring and Classification of Endocrine Disruptors using Bioluminescent Bacteria.

  • 본 연구는 4가지 종류의 재조합 발광성 미생물을 이용하여 내분비계 장애물질로 알려진 여러 가지 물질에 대한 cellular toxicity를 유전자 손상, 단백질 손상, 산화적 손상, 생물막 손상으로 구별하여 확인하였다. 4가지 발광성 미생물의 반응성에 따라 내분비계 장애물질의 독성 형태를 규명할 수 있었고, 생명체에 미치는 독성 정도를 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 유전자 손상을 탐지할 수 있는 DPD2794의 경우 유전자 손상을 일으키는 형태에 따라 두 그룹으로 보다 세분화가 가능하였다. 따라서 본 연구결과를 바탕으로 내분비계 장애물질이 호르몬 교란으로 인한 피해뿐만 아니라 cellular toxicity로 인한 피해 역시 입힐 수 있는 것으로 확인하였고, 이들 발광성 박테리아를 이용하여 그 독성 형태를 정확하게 파악할 수 없었던, 유해 물질들의 분류를 위한 screening method로의 개발 역시 가능할 것이다.

알루미나 세라믹에 대한 열충격 손상의 비파괴적 평가 (Nondestructive Evaluation of Thermal Shock Damage for Alumina Ceramics)

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the applicability of acoustic emission(AE) technique to monitor the progress of the thermal shock damage on alumina ceramic. For this purpose, alumina ceramic specimen was heated in the furnace and then was quenched in the water tank. When the specimen was quenched in the water tank, complex AE signals due to the initiation of micro-cracks and boiling effect were generated by the progress of thermal shock damage. These mixed AE signals have to be classified for monitoring the degree of the thermal shock damage of alumina ceramics. In this paper, the mixed AE signals generated from both the boiling effect and the crack initiation under thermal shock test was analyzed. The characteristics of AE signals were also discussed by considering the variation of bending strength and Yongs modulus of specimens.

Anti-oxidative effects of Phellinus linteus and red ginseng extracts on oxidative stress-induced DNA damage

  • Anti-oxidative effect of Phellinus linteus (P. linteus) and red ginseng extracts on DNA damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) were investigated in this study. P. linteus (PLE) and red ginseng extracts (RGE) inhibited the breaking of E. coli ColE1 plasmid DNA strands as well as nuclear DNA of rat hepatocytes damaged by oxidative stress. In addition, a reaction mixture of PLE and RGE showed synergistic inhibitory effect against DNA damage. These results suggest that PLE and RGE have a cellular defensive effect against DNA damage induced by ROS.

$H_2O_2$ 유도 8-OH2'dG 생성 및 DNA Single Strand Break에 미치는 Galangin의 억제효과 (Suppressive Effect of Galangin on the Formation of 8-OH2'dG and DNA Single Strand Breaks by Hydrogen Peroxide)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of galangin towards hydrogen peroxide-induced DNA damage. The calf thymus DNA and Chinese Hamster Lung (CHL) cells were used to measure 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine(8-OH2'dG) as an indicator of DNA oxidative damage using high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Hydrogen peroxide in the presence of Fe(II) ion induced the formation of 8-OH2'dG in both calf thymus DNA and CHL cells. The DNA damage effects were enhanced by increasing the concentration of Fe(II) ion and inhibited by galangin. In the single cell gel electrophoresis (Comet assay), galangin and dl-a-tocopherol showed an inhibitory effect in CHL on hydrogen peroxide induced DNA single strand breaks. Galangin showed more potent activity than dl-$\alpha$-tocopherol under our experimental conditions. These results indicate that galangin can modify the action mechanisms of the oxidative DNA damage and may act as chemopreventive agents against oxidative stress.
