This study aims to estimate daily maximum air temperature estimated using satellite-derived surface temperature and Elevation Derivative Database (EDD). The analysis is focused on the establishment of a semi-empirical estimation technique of daily maximum air temperature through the multiple regression analysis. This tests the contribution of EDD in the air temperature estimation when it is added into regression model as an independent variable. The better correlation is shown with the EDD data as compared with the correlation without this data set. In order to provide a progressive estimation technique, we propose and compare three approaches: 1) seasonal estimation non-considering landcover, 2) seasonal estimation considering landcover, and 3) estimation according to landcover type and non-considering season. The last method shows the best fit with the root-mean-square error between 0.56$^{\circ}C$ and 3.14$^{\circ}C$. A cross-validation procedure is performed for third method to valid the estimated values for two major landcover types (cropland and forest). For both landcover types, the validation results show reasonable agreement with estimation results. Therefore it is considered that the estimation technique proposed may be applicable to most parts of South Korea.

In this study, the correlation analysis was conducted between observed air temperature (maximum, minimum, and mean air temperature) and the daytime and nighttime data of Terra/Aqua MODIS LST(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Land Surface Temperature) for 86 weather stations. All the data of the recent 11 years from 2008 to 2018 were prepared with daily base. In particular, the characteristics of the cold and heat waves incidence period in 2018 were analyzed. The correlation analysis was performed using the Pearson correlation coefficient(R) and root mean square error(RMSE). As a result of time series analysis, the trend between observed air temperature and MODIS LST were similar, showing the correlation above 0.9 in maximum temperature, above 0.8 in mean and minimum temperature. Especially, the maximum temperature was found to have the highest accuracy with Terra MODIS LST daytime, and the minimum temperature had the highest correlation with Terra MODIS LST nighttime. During the cold wave period, both Terra and Aqua MODIS LST showed higher correlations with nighttime data than daytime data. For the heat wave period, the Aqua MODIS LST daytime data was good, but the overall R was below 0.5. Additional analysis is necessary for further study considering such as land cover and elevation characteristics.

To evaluate the acute effects of fine particles on pulmonary function, a longitudinal study was conducted. This study was carried out for the schoolchildren (3rd and 6th grades) living in Beijing, China. Children were asked to record their daily levels of peak expiratory flow rate using portable peak flow meter (mini-Wright) for 40 days. The relationship between daily PEFR and fine particle levels was analyzed using a mixed linear regression models including gender, height, the presence of respiratory symptoms, and daily average temperature and relative humidity as extraneous variables. The total number of students participating in this longitudinal study was 87. Daily measured PEFR was in the range of $253{\sim}501L/min$. On the daily basis, a PEFR measured in the morning was shown to be lower than that measured in the evening (or afternoon). The daily mean concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ over the study period were $180.2\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $103.2\;{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. The IQR (inter-quartile range) of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ were $91.8\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $58.0\;{\mu}g/m^3$. Daily mean PEFR was regressed with the 24-hour average $PM_{10}$ (or $PM_{2.5}$) levels, weather information such as air temperature and relative humidity, and individual characteristics including gender, height, and respiratory symptoms. The analysis showed that the increase of fine particle concentrations was negatively associated with the variability in PEFR. The IQR increments of $PM_{10}$ or $PM_{2.5}$ (at 1-day time lag) were also shown to be related with 1.54L/min (95% Confidence intervals -2.14, -0.94) and 1.56L/min (95% CI -2.16, -0.95) decline in PEFR.

Objective: We analyzed the association between regional weather and temporal changes on the daily occurrence of trauma emergencies and their severity. Methods: In this cross-sectional prospective study, we investigated daily atmospheric patterns in trauma episodes in 1,344 patients in Cheongju city, South Korea, from January 2016 to December 2016 and analyzed the association of trauma occurrence and Injury Severity Scores (ISS) with weather conditions on a daily scale. Results: The mean age of trauma patients was $53.0{\pm}23.8years$ and average ISS was $9.0{\pm}2.0$. Incidence of trauma was positively correlated with average temperature (r=0.512, P<0.001) and atmospheric pressure (r=0.332, P=0.010) and negatively correlated with air pollutants (particulate matter less than $2.5{\mu}m^3$ [PM2.5], r=-0.629, P<0.001; particulate matter less than $10{\mu}m^3$ [PM10], r=-0.679, P<0.001). ISS was not significantly correlated with climate parameters and air pollutants, and variability was observed in the frequency and severity of trauma by time of day (highest occurrence, 16-20 pm; highest ISS, 4-8 am), day of the week (highest occurrence and highest ISS, Saturday), month of the year (highest occurrence, July; highest ISS, November), and season (highest incidence, summer; highest ISS, autumn). Conclusion: The study shows a positive relationship between trauma occurrence and specific weather conditions, such as atmospheric temperature and pressure. There was a negative relationship between concentrations of PM2.5 or PM10, and trauma occurrence. However, no correlation was observed between weather conditions or the concentrations of air pollutants and ISS. In addition, seasonal, circaseptan, and circadian variations exist in trauma occurrence and severity. Thus, we suggest that evaluation of a larger, population-based data set is needed to further investigate and confirm these relationships.

This study was conducted to analyze the optimum heading period according to the recent climatic change for improvement of rice yield and grain quality in the Yeongnam area. We analyzed climatic elements including daily mean air temperature, daily range of air temperature, sunshine hours, and amount of precipitation from 1996 to 2005 in comparison with those of the 1971 to 2000 normal. Daily mean air temperature and amount of precipitation in the recent 10 years increased, but daily range of air temperature and sunshine hours decreased in comparison with the norm. Also, monthly mean air temperature was lowered remarkably in July and August. The monthly amount of precipitation largely increased in August and September. The daily range of air temperature and sunshine hours were greatly decreased from August to October, Possible cultivation periods for rice in the recent 10 years ranged from 171 days in Boughwa to 228 days in Busan and was expanded about $1{\sim}13$ days in comparison with the normal. Optimum heading date by local regions for the maximum climatic yield potential was estimated as July 31 at Bonghwa to September 7 at Busan, Masan, and Tongyeong in the recent 10 years. There was a wide difference in optimum heading date according to local legions of the Yeongnam area. Compared to the normal, optimum heading date in the recent 10 years was delayed about I~8 days in most local regions except Bonghwa, Mungyeong, and Yeongdeok. These results suggested that it is necessary to develop late maturity rice cultivars for producing high yield and quality rice grain due to the recent climatic change. Moreover, it is still more important to select the most suitable cultivation period appropriate to the changed climate of each local region in Yeongnam area.

$PM_{10}$ concentration is related to the meteorological variables including to local and synoptic meteorology. In this study the $PM_{10}$ concentrations of Busan in 2007~2011 were analyzed and the days of yellow sand or rainfall which is more than 5 mm were excluded. The sections of $PM_{10}$ concentration were divided according to 10-quantiles, quartiles and 90-quantiles. The 90-quantiles of daily $PM_{10}$ concentration were selected as high concentration dates. In the high concentration dates the daily mean averaged cloudness, mean daily surface wind speed, daily mean surface pressure and PBL height were low and diurnal variation of surface pressure and daily maximum surface temperature were high. When the high $PM_{10}$ dates occurred, the west and south wind blew on the ground and the west wind blew strongly on the 850 hPa. So it seemed that long range transboundary air pollutants made effects on the high concentration dates. The cluster analysis using Hysplit model which is the backward trajectory was made on the high concentration dates. As a result, 3 clusters were extracted and on the short range transboundary cluster the daily mean relative humidity and cloudness were high and PBL height was low.

The relationships between rice grain filling and air temperature of maturing period in paddy field were analyzed to evaluate the effects of climatic change on rice productivity in Korea. Data of air temperature of 31, 41 and 51 days after heading(DAH) for 11 years from 2002 to 2016 were collected and analyzed to determine the effects on rice yield and yield component related traits of Chucheogbyeo, popular cultivar in Gyeonggi province in Korea. As the results, ripening ratio was closely correlated with the mean of daily maximum temperature (DMAT $r=0.71^*$), the mean of daily temperature difference (DTD, $r=0.67^*$) of 41 DAH and DTD ($0.65^*$) of 51 DAH. Weight of 1,000 paddy rice grains was closely correlated with accumulated sunshine hours (ASH) of 31 ($r=0.84^{**}$), 41 ($r=0.75^{**}$), 51 ($r=0.72^*$) DAH. Brown rice grain weight recovery ratio was closely correlated with DTD ($r=0.76^{**}$) and ASH ($r=0.84^{**}$) of 31 DAH, DMAT ($r=0.75^{**}$, $r=0.79^{**}$), DTD ($r=0.79^{**}$, $r=0.77^{**}$) and ASH ($r=0.81^{**}$, $r=0.79^{**}$) of 41 and 51 DAH. Paddy rice yield was closely correlated with MDT ($r=-0.63^*$) of 31 DAH, mean of daily minimum temperature (DMIT, $r=-0.83^{**}$, $r=-0.70^*$), DTD ($r=0.71^*$, $r=0.62^*$) of 31 and 41 DAH. Brown rice yield was correlated closely with DMIT ($r=-0.86^{**}$, $r=-0.73^*$) and DTD ($r=0.80^{**}$, $r=0.72^*$) of 31, 41 DAH, and DTD ($r=0.69^*$) of 51 DAH. Milled rice yield was correlated closely with DMIT ($r=-86^{**}$, $r=-0.73^*$), DTD ($r=0.79^{**}$, $r=0.71^*$) of 31, 41 DAH, and DTD ($r=0.68^*$) of 51 DAH.

A study was carried out to determine the influence of climatic environments on the growth characteristics and bulb quality of extremely early-maturing type onion grown at different altitudes, such as 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m above sea level (ASL). The mean air temperature during the growing season of extremely early-maturing type onion (October 18 to April 27) was $10.8^{\circ}C$, $9.6^{\circ}C$, $8.1^{\circ}C$ and $6.1^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m ASL. The mean air temperature during the bulb growth period (March 16 to April 14) was recorded $10.5^{\circ}C$, $9.4^{\circ}C$, $7.9^{\circ}C$ and $6.0^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700 m ASL. Plant height, neck diameter, leaf number, leaf area, top fresh weight and top dry weight were significantly increased in growing of extremely early-maturing type onion at 60m ASL. Bulb/neck diameter ratio increased rapidly under the same temperature regime. The diameter and weight of the bulb were also the largest at 60m ASL during the bulb growth period (daily mean temperature of $12.5^{\circ}C$). At 60m ASL, there was the highest bulb size like a height, diameter and weight of bulb related directly on onion yield in the bulb growth period from March 16 to April 14. In contrast, yield and bulb quality were considerably decreased at 700m ASL during the bulb growth stage (daily mean temperature of $8.4^{\circ}C$). The quantity of extremely early-maturing type onion has gradually decreased as the daily average temperature drops below $12.5^{\circ}C$ during the bulb growth stage (March 16 to April 14). As a result, the lower temperature (daily mean temperature below $12.5^{\circ}C$) during the bulb growth stage significantly decreased the size and quantity of bulb in direction proportion.
This study investigates urbanization effect in warming trend of surface air temperature over Korea. The data used in this study consist of the daily minimum and maximum temperatures during the period of 32 years(1968-1999) from 16 stations of KMA. To calculate magnitude and trend of urbanization effect, stations were classified into urban and rural stations using population statistics. Urban stations were defined as those with population densities greater than 1000 persons per kilometer squared in 1995. The others were defined as rural stations. The urban stations were also subdivided into two groups according to their population totals. For estimates of urban effect magnitude, temperature change was calculated by comparing 16-year mean values between 1968-83 and 1984-99. Then, the difference between each urban station and every rural station was calculated. During the analysis period of 32 years, maximum temperature increase is $1.22^{\circ}C$. In the total temperature increase, urban effect is estimated by 28.7%. For minimum temperature, it becomes larger by about 10% than that in maximum temperature. Therefore, urban effect in an increasing trend of minimum temperature is 38.9% in the change of $1.13^{\circ}C$.
To evaluate the effect of air pollution on respiratory health in children, We conducted a longitudinal study in which children were asked to record their daily levels of Peak Expiratory Flow Rate(PEFR) using potable peak flow meter(mini-Wright) for 4 weeks. The relationship between daily PEFR and ambient air particle levels was analyzed using a mixed linear regression models including gender, age in year, weight, the presence of respiratory symptoms, and relative humidity as an extraneous variable. The daily mean concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ over the study period were $64.9{\mu}g/m^3$ and $46.1{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. The range of daily measured PEFR in this study was $182{\sim}481\;l/min$. Daily mean PEFR was regressed with the 24-hour average $PM_{10}(or\;PM_{2.5})$ levels, weather information such as air temperature and relative humidity, and individual characteristics including sex, weight, and respiratory symptoms. The analysis showed that the increase of air particle concentrations was negatively associated with the variability in PEFR. We estimated that the IQR increment of $PM_{10}$ or $PM_{2.5}$ were associated with 1.5 l/min (95% Confidence intervals -3.1, 0.1) and 0.8 l/min(95% CI -1.8, 0.1) decline in PEFR. Even though this study showed negative findings on the relationship between respiratory function and air particles, it was worth noting that the findings must be interpreted cautiously because exposure measurement based on monitoring of ambient air likely resulted in misclassification of true exposure levels and this was the first Korean study that $PM_{2.5}$ measurement was applied as an index of air quality.
