It is well known that the distributional properties of financial asset returns exhibit fatter-tails and skewer-mean than the assumption of normal distribution. The correct assumption of return distribution might improve the estimated performance of the Value-at-Risk(VaR) models in financial markets. In this paper, we estimate and compare the VaR performance using the RiskMetrics, GARCH and FIGARCH models based on the normal and skewed-Student-t distributions in two daily returns of the Korean Composite Stock Index(KOSPI) and Korean Won-US Dollar(KRW-USD) exchange rate. We also perform the expected shortfall to assess the size of expected loss in terms of the estimation of the empirical failure rate. From the results of empirical VaR analysis, it is found that the presence of long memory in the volatility of sample returns is not an important in estimating an accurate VaR performance. However, it is more important to consider a model with skewed-Student-t distribution innovation in determining better VaR. In short, the appropriate assumption of return distribution provides more accurate VaR models for the portfolio managers and investors.

This study examined the stock return co-movement among Korean digital contents industry, American NASDAQ, and Japanese NIKKEI225. This is to identify the reaction of Korean digital contents industry on the movement of foreign stock market. To investigate the co-movements, during the period of 1999 to 2005, daily logarithm difference returns of each stock market indices are tested by the methodology of Granger(1963, 1969)'s causality test. The positive influence from NASDAQ index to Korean digital contents industry index are found, but not vice versa. It means that the market value of firms in Korean digital contents industry affected by the movement of American NASDAQ market which composite with digital IT firms. However, the co-movements with NIKKEI225 did not found.

This study investigates the behavior of foreign investors in the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) in the time of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as to whether trading is abnormal, what strategy is followed, whether herd behavior is present, and whether the actions destabilize the market. Foreign investors' trading behavior is measured by net buying volume divided by market capitalization, whereas the stock market behavior is measured by logged return on the SET index portfolio. The data are daily from Tuesday, August 28, 2018, to Monday, May 18, 2020. The study extends the conditional-regression model in an event-study framework and extracts the unobserved abnormal trading behavior using the Kalman filtering technique. It then applies vector autoregressions and impulse responses to test for the investors' chosen strategy, herd behavior, and market destabilization. The results show that foreign investors' abnormal trading volume is negative and significant. An analysis of the abnormal trading volume with stock returns reveals that foreign investors are not positive-feedback investors, but rather, they self-herd. Although foreign investors' abnormal trading does not destabilize the market, it induces stock-return volatility of a similar size to normal trade. The methodology is new; the findings are useful for researchers, local authorities, and investors.
This paper analyses interaction between yen/dollar exchange rates and NIKKEI index using bivariate GJR-GARCH(1,1) model. The data employed for the study is daily data series for the period of Jan. 4, 1995 through Aug. 30, 2009. One of main findings is that market inefficiency appears in the periods of financial crisis. Second, the volatility of exchange rates and stock returns has more increased in the wake of the volatility shock of the previous period during financial crisis than during non-financial crisis. Third, interestingly, the asymmetric volatility shock by bad news in those markets is bigger in financial crisis period than in non financial crisis. Fourth, in the period of current global financial crisis triggered by subprime mortgage crisis in U.S, volatility shock at the previous period is bigger than that of Asian financial crisis that happened in 1997. Lastly, the correlation between both returns of exchange rates and stock prices turns up positive according to the empirical estimation. This result may come from the fact that Japanese stock market does not have much attraction for international financial investment compared to stock markets of neighbouring countries like China, Korea and so on, while real sector's contribution to the economy is considered more importantly.
This Study examines the implications for event studies using the daily stock data. The output present the event study results. The event period is defined from 30 days before through 30 days after the event date, and is broken into four "windows" for abnormal return cumulation: the pre-event period, days -30 through -2; dajys -1 and 0, a period commonly investigated for the immediate impact of the event; and the post-event period, days +1 through +30. It shows how firm's information offerings affect the price process and consequent issues. The Patell Z test is an examples of a standardized abnormal return approach, which estimate a separate standard error for each security-event and assumes cross-sectional independence. The generalized sign test adjusts for the fraction of positive abnormal returns in the estimation period instead of assuming 0.5.
This article has examined the international transmission of returns among S&P500, Nikkei225 and SENSEX stock index cash markets using the daily closing prices covered from January 4, 2002 to February 6, 2009. For this purpose we employed dynamic time series models such as the Granger causality analysis and variance decomposition analysis based on VAR model. The main empirical results are as follows; First, according to Granger causality tests we find that S&P500 stock index has a significant prediction power on the changes of SENSEX and Nikkei225 stock index market and vice versa. However, US stock market's influence is dominant to the other stock markets at a significant level statistically. Second, according to variance decomposition, SENSEX stock index is more sensitive to the movement of S&P500 than that of Nikkei225 stock index. These kinds of empirical results shows that the three stock markets are integrated over times and these results will be informative for the international investors to build the world-wide investment portfolio and risk management strategies, etc.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine whether trading volume amplifies the extent to which lottery-type stocks are overpriced, and whether economic sentiment index explains time-variation in the magnitude of the volume amplification effect. Design/methodology/approach - We examine monthly returns on 5x5 monthly bivariate portfolios formed by lottery characteristics (measured by maximum daily return) and trading volume. In addition, we perform time-series regression tests to examine how the volume amplification effect changes in high and low economic sentiment periods, after controlling for Fama-French three factors. Findings - Our bivariate portfolio analysis shows that the overpricing of lottery-type stocks are mostly pronounced among high trading volume stocks. In contrast, for low trading volume stocks, overpricing of lottery-type stocks appears to vanish. Furthermore, the amplification effect of trading volume on overpricing of lottery-type stock is concentrated in high economic sentiment periods. Research implications or Originality - This study is the first attempt to examine whether trading volume drives lottery-type stocks' overpricing in the Korean stock market. Furthermore, our analysis unveils the time-varying nature of volume amplification effect. The results suggest that trading volume might play a important hidden role in asset pricing, opening a new line of researches in the future.
This paper uses the Efficient Method of Moments(EMM) of Gallant and Tauchen to estimate continuous-time stochastic volatility diffusion model for the Korean Composite Stock Price Index, sampled daily over $1995\sim2002$. The estimates display non-normality of stock index return, leptokurtic distribution, and stochastic volatility. Funker, this study suggests that two factor stochastic volatility model will be more desirable than one factor stochastic volatility model to estimate daily Korean stock return and also suggests that the stochastic volatility diffusions should allow for Poisson jumps of time-varying intensity.
Recently, there is a growing body of literature that suggests that information inefficiency is one of the causes of the asymmetric volatility. If this explanation for the asymmetric volatility is appropriate, then innovations, such as the introduction of futures, may be expected to impact the asymmetric volatility of stock market. As transaction costs and margin requirements in the futures market are lower than those in the spot market, new information is transmitted to futures prices more quickly and affects spot prices through arbitrage trading with spots. Also, the merit of the futures market may attract noise traders away from the spot market to the futures market. This study examines the impact of futures on the asymmetry of stock market volatility. If the asymmetric volatility is significant lower post-futures and exist in the futures market, it has validity that the asymmetric volatility is caused by information inefficiency in the spot market. The data examined are daily logarithmic returns on KOSPI 200 stock price index from January 4, 1993 to December 26, 2000. To examine the existence of the asymmetric volatility in the futures market, logarithmic returns on KOSPI 200 futures are used from May 4, 1996 to December 26, 2000. We used a conditional mode of TGARCH(threshold GARCH) of Glosten, Jagannathan and Runkel(1993). Pre-futures the spot market exhibits significant asymmetric responses of volatility to news and post-futures asymmetries are significantly lower, irrespective of bear market and bull market. The results suggest that the introduction of stock index futures has an effect on the asymmetric volatility of the spot market and are inconsistent with leverage being the sole explanation of asymmetry. However, it is found that the volatility of futures is not so asymmetric as expected.
This study empirically analyzes the effects of international oil prices on domestic stock market volatility. The data used for the analysis are 10-minute high-frequency data of the KOSPI index and WTI futures price from January 2, 2015, to July 30, 2021. For using the high-frequency data, a heterogeneous autoregression (HAR) model is employed. The analysis model utilizes the advantages of high frequency data to observe the impact of international oil prices through realized volatility, realized skewness, and kurtosis as well as oil price return. In the estimation, the Box-Cox transformation is applied in consideration of the distribution of realized volatility with high skewness. As a result, it finds that the daily return fluctuation of the WTI price has a statistically significant positive (+) effect on the volatility of the KOSPI return. However, the volatility, skewness, and kurtosis of the WTI return do not appear to affect the volatility of the KOSPI return. This result is believed to be because the volatility of the KOSPI return reflects the daily change in the WTI return, but does not reflect the intraday trading behavior of investors.
