  • It has been thirty years since Daedeuk Science Park was established in Daejeon, Korea. The Park has grown to be a national center for scientific activities, hosting more thirty research institutes at major scale with 12,000 scientists. As a main purpose of establishing the science park was to promote sciences as basic research, there have not been much economic impacts created from the science park. There have also been very little networks established among research and educational institutes within the science park and the city of Daejeon in general. After the economic crisis in 1997, however, there have been increasing changes around the Park. Since then more than 400 technology-intensive firms were newly created, mainly from the research institutes, or introduced to the Park area. This paper analyzes R&D networks of these small firms, especially with research institutes and universities, based on a questionnaire survey. The paper has argued: 1) to establish technology transfer centers, 2) to emphasize research related to commercialization, 3) to intensify advertizement of research outputs to the potential entrepreneurs, 4) to assist entrepreneural associations of concerned companies.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to assess the knowledge and performance of developmentally supportive positioning for premature infants (DSPP) among neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses. Methods: The participants in this study were 131 nurses working in the NICU at five university hospitals in Daejeon and the city of Cheong-ju. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficients using SPSS for Windows version 22.0. Results: NICU nurses' average DSPP knowledge score was 24.7 out of 33.0, and their average DSPP performance score was 3.2 out of 4.0. A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between knowledge and performance of DSPP (r=.32, p<.001). Conclusion: To improve the level of NICU nurses' knowledge and performance of DSPP, educational programs should be developed and their effectiveness should be verified.

  • The purpose of this study is ultimately to contribute to enhancing quality of patients' life, by grasping quality level of care-giving service that is recognized by inpatients of long-term care hospital, and by pursuing a plan for improving quality of care-giving service based on this. For this, targeting 500 patients who entered 40 long-term care hospitals in Daejeon Metropolitan City, the quality of service was multi-dimensionally grasped by using SERVQUAL scale. As a result of research, the quality of care-giving service, which is recognized by patients as survey subjects, tended to be relatively high with about 4 points as a whole out of 5-point perfection. By item, reliability was indicated to be the highest with 4.56 points. The next was surveyed to be in order of tangibility, empathy, responsiveness, and assurance.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the degree of resilience, traumatic events, secondary traumatic stress, and calling reported by firefighters and to identify the factors affecting the resilience of firefighters. Methods: Data were collected using structured questionnaires and 200 fire officials working in D city were enrolled as the subjects. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0, and the analyses included descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression. Results: The difference in resilience according to general characteristics showed significant differences in health status (F=4.33, p=.014) and job satisfaction (F=6.13, p=.003). The factors affecting resilience were identified as calling (β=.25, p<.001), and the explanatory power for resilience was 19.2%. Conclusion: It is necessary to increase calling in order to increase resilience. Therefore, we suggest that professional education and programs that consider personal characteristics are needed to strengthen the calling.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of mouthguards athletes who play contact sports use as well as their perceived discomfort of wearing them in order to analyze the relationship with wearing frequency so as acquire basic data for the development of more user-friendly mouthguards. Methods: The participants, who completed a self-report questionnaire, included 70 contact sports athletes, including high school contact (rugby and boxing) sport department affiliated athletes located in the city of Daejeon. Results: Breathing (p<0.01), fitting (p<0.05), ease of wearing (p<0.01), occlusion (p<0.05), and fatigue in muscles (p<0.05) were positively correlated with wearing frequency. Furthermore, the recognition of the mouthguards was not significantly correlated with wearing frequency. Conclusion: To prevent oral and maxillofacial trauma, multi-directional studies are imperative to develop mouthguards, which are comfortable and cost-efficient.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in user-centered smart city services. In this study, user behavior analysis was performed as a preliminary study for user - centered smart city service planning. In particular, we will use GIS based location analysis data and video ethonography methodology to derive smart city service direction and needs. In this study, the area of Daejeon Design District selected as the Smart City Test bed was selected as the survey area and the location analysis data of the traffic accident analysis system of the road traffic corporation and the fixed camera We observed user's behavior type and change with image data extracted through the technique. Location analysis data is classified according to the type of accident, and image data is classified into 11 subdivided types of user activities. The problems and specificities observed were analyzed. The user behavior characteristics investigated through this study are meaningful to provide a basis for suggesting user - centered smart city services in the future.

  • This study was conducted to survey Dirofilaria (D.) immitis antigen, and Anaplasma (A.) phagocytophilum, Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi, and Ehrlichia (E.) canis antibodies among clinically healthy dogs in the Daejeon city and Kangwon province. Whole blood samples were collected from two hundred and fifty two dogs (127 females and 125 males, 147 outdoors and 105 indoors), and they were tested by using ELISA kit (SNAP 4Dx, IDEXX Laboratories, USA). Chi-squared analysis showed that A. phagocytophilum of female dogs in outdoors group was significantly higher prevalence than that of female dogs in indoors group (p < 0.05). In addition, infection rate of A. phagocytophilum of over 7 year-old-dogs in outdoors group revealed significantly higher prevalence than that of indoors group (p < 0.01). In E. canis, the under 4 year-old-dogs (p < 0.05), 4~7 year-old-dogs (p < 0.05) and over 7 year-old-dogs (p < 0.01) in outdoor group showed significantly higher prevalence than that of indoors group, respectively. In conclusion, this study is the large scale survey of canine D. immitis antigen, A. phagocytophilum, B. burgdorferi, and E. canis antibodies in the Daejeon city and Kangwon province, and it provides an useful reference for clinicians.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to define the underserved emergency medical services (EMS) areas in Daejeon metropolitan city, as well as to identify their distinctive characteristics in public health perspectives. Methods: An underserved EMS area was operationally defined as an area in which it is difficult to arrive at an emergency medical center within 30 minutes. Using a cost-weighted distance algorithm with a geographic information system (GIS), the underserved EMS area was calculated. The characteristics of the underserved areas were analyzed by the Chi-square test. The SPSS statistical software package was used to perform the statistical analysis. All statistical tests were two-sided, and a p-value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Twelve administrative sectors ('Dong' in Korean) were included in the underserved areas, accounting for a population of approximately 8,100 citizens. The relationships between underserved EMS area and populations of agriculture, fishery, and forestry; citizens who are recipients of national basic livelihood security program; disabled; or aged 65 or older were statistically significant. Conclusion: It was found that 12 administrative sectors were included in the underserved EMS areas. Revealing underserved EMS areas using GIS analysis based on a cost-weighted distance algorithm of road data was an effective analytic method. However, as this study was confined to Daejeon City, South Korea, a nation-wide study should be performed to provide a more accurate conclusion.
