  • To fly a drone or unmanned aerial vechicle(UAV) safely, its pilot needs to maintain high situation awareness of its flight space. One of the important ways to improve the flight space awareness is to integrate both the global and the local navigation map a drone provides. However, the drone pilot often has to use the inconsistent reference frames or perspectives between the two maps. In specific, the global navigation map tends to display space information in the third-person perspective, whereas the local map tends to use the first-person perspective through the drone camera. This inconsistent perspective problem makes the pilot use mental rotation to align the different perspectives. In addition, integrating different dimensionalities (2D vs. 3D) of the two maps may aggravate the pilot's cognitive load of mental rotation. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relation between perspective difference ($0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$, $270^{\circ}$) and the map dimensionality matches (3D-3D vs. 3D-2D) to improve the way of integrating the two maps. The results show that the pilot's flight space awareness improves when the perspective differences are smaller and also when the dimensionalities between the two maps are matched.

  • The remarkable change in the automobile industry, which is a traditional industrial field, is now evolving into a form of moving toward autonomous functions rather than humans due to various convenience functions and automatic driving or autonomous driving technologies if the person was central when driving the car. This situation is expanding to various industries such as the aviation industry and the drone market, as well as the robot market. The drone market in the aviation industry is being used in various fields due to the unmanned nature of drone operation. Among them, military drones are secret and due to the specificity of technology, details are not disclosed, but as a collection of advanced technologies, they have played a key role in drone development. In this study, the current status of China and the European Union, including the United States, which are major competitors in the drone field, was investigated, and the technologies of major countries were compared and analyzed through the characteristics and operational specifications of the drones currently in operation.

  • Drones can be manipulated in a variety of ways. One of the most common controller is joystick method. But joystick controller uses both hands and takes a long time to learn. Particularly, in the case of 8-character flight, it is necessary to use both front and rear flight (pitch), left and right flight (Roll), and body rotation (Yaw). Joystick controller has limitations to intuitively control it. In particular, when the main body rotates, the viewpoint of the forward direction is changed between the drones and the user, thereby causing a mental rotation problem in which the user must control the rotating state of the drones. Therefore, we developed a motion matching controller that matches the motion of the drones and the controller. That is, the movement of the drone and the movement of the controller are the same. In this study, we used a gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor to map the controller's forward / backward, left / right and body rotation movements to drone's forward / backward, left / right, and rotational flight motion. The motor output is controlled by the throttle dial at the center of the controller. As the motions coincide with each other, it is expected that the first drone operator will be able to control more intuitively than the joystick manipulator with less learning.

  • When there is a spray flow such as from a pesticide nozzle, winds affect the droplet flow of a rotary-wing drone accompanied by a strong wake, with a severe oscillation. Especially, during forwarding flights or when winds come from the side, compare to a simple hovering flight as the droplet is in the effect of aerodynamic drag force, the effect of spraying region becomes even larger. For this reason, the spraying of pesticides using drones may cause a greater risk of scattering or a difference in droplet dispersion between locations, resulting in a decrease in efficiency. Therefore, through proper numerical modeling and its applied simulation, an indication tool is required applicable for the various flight and atmospheric conditions. In this research, we completed both experiment and numerical analysis for the strong downwash from the rotor and flight velocity of the drone by comparing the probability density function of droplet distribution to build a spraying system that can improve the efficiency when spraying droplets in the pesticide spray drone.

  • In recent years, a study of power-line inspection using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been actively conducted. However, relevant studies have been conducting power-line inspection with an UAV operated by manual control, and they have developed just power-line detection algorithm on aerial images. To overcome limitations of existing research, we propose a drone-based power-line tracking system in this paper. The main contributions of this paper are to operate developed system under configured environment and to develop a power-line detection algorithm in real-time. Developed system is composed of the power-line detection and the image-based tracking control. To detect a power-line in real-time, a region of interest (ROI) image is extracted. Furthermore, clustering algorithm is used in order to discriminate the power-line from background. Finally, the power-line is detected by using the Hough transform, and a center position and a tilt angle are estimated by using the Kalman filter to control a drone smoothly. We design a position controller and an attitude controller for image-based tracking control, and both controllers are designed based on the proportional-derivative (PD) control method. The interaction between the position controller and the attitude controller makes the drone track the power-line. Several experiments were carried out in environments where conditions are similar to actual environments, which demonstrates the superiority of the developed system.

  • Ortho images created by aerial photogrammetry have been used in large areas but they are uneconomical for small areas and continuous change observation. The drones have been developed for military purposes, and recently they are being used crop management and analysis, broadcast relay, meteorological observation and disaster investigation and so on. Also there were a lot of studies of expensive commercial drone. In this paper, lower price self-assembly drone usable for in small areas, Obtained images and produced Orthomosaic and DSM using mission planner which is a normal digital camera and open source program, and postprocessing was used Pix4d software. GCP errors are X-coordinate 3.4cm, Y-coordinate 2.4cm, Z-coordinate 4.2cm. It seems like the self-assembly drone can be used for various fields.

  • This paper describes the design of navigation system for an unmanned target drone which is operated by Korean army as for anti-air gun shooting training. Current target drone is operated by pilot control of on-board servo motor via remote control system. Automatic flight control system for the target drone greatly reduces work load of ground pilot and can increase application area of the drone. Most UAVs being operated nowdays use high-priced sensors as AHRS and IMU to measure the attitude, but those are costly. This paper introduces the development of low-cost automatic flight control system with low-cost sensors. The integrated automatic flight control system has been developed by integrating combining power module, switching module, monitoring module and RC receiver as an one module. The performance of navigation for low cost unmanned aerial vehicle, unmanned target drone as our test bed in this paper is verified by both Hardware in the loop simulation(HILS) to test performance of GPS as GPS output frequency high and results of flight test.

  • This paper proposes a method for detecting faults in conveyor systems used for transportation of raw materials needed in the thermal power plant and cement industries. A small drone was designed in consideration of the difficulty in accessing the industrial site and the need to use it in wide industrial site. In order to apply the system to the embedded microprocessor, hardware and algorithms considering limited memory and execution time have been proposed. At this time, the failure determination method measures the peak frequency through the measurement, detects the continuity of the high frequency, and performs the failure diagnosis with the high frequency components of noise. The proposed system consists of experimental environment based on the data obtained from the actual thermal power plant, and it is confirmed that the proposed system is useful by conducting virtual environment experiments with the drone designed system. In the future, further research is needed to improve the drone's flight stability and to improve discrimination performance by using more intelligent methods of fault frequency.

  • At present, TICN has been developed and distributed for military command control. TICN is known as the 3.5G mobile communication technology based on WiBro, which shows technical limitation in the field operation situation. Accordingly, the drone-type base station platform is attracting attention as an alternative to overcome technical limitations such as difficulty in securing communication LoS and limiting expeditious network configuration. In this study, we performed simulation performance evaluation of drone-type base station operation in 28 GHz that is considered most suitable for cellular communication within mmWave frequency band. Specifically, we analyzed the changes in throughput and fairness performance according to radio resource management policies such as frequency reuse and scheduling in multi-cell topology. Through this, we tried to provide insights on the operation philosophy on drone-type base station.

  • We propose a capture mechanism based on the principles of fishing nets that can be mounted on the drone using cable. The gripper mechanism, mainly proposed for the drone is heavy, and is limited to catch standardized objects. In contrast, the proposed capture device in this paper is light, flexible, and can capture various types of objects from a long distance. The theoretical relationships between cables and mechanisms were analyzed. Finally, the capture device was designed and manufactured to be installed in the drone (DJI S900) to conduct capturing experiments for various objects and verify the validity.
