A Study on how to Utilize the DR System using Assistive Devices (보조기구를 이용한 DR System 활용 방법에 대한 연구)

  • The hip joint device is an important immobilization device for internal rotation in the diagnosis of bone density test, microfracture, and arthritis. These fixing mechanisms have limitations in maintaining reproducibility due to the use of Velcro. In this study, we developed an improved hip joint device and evaluated its usefulness. For 30 students enrolled in the Department of Radiology, we evaluated the reproducibility through medical imaging and the time required for positioning by applying the conventionaling and improved device. Changes over time were also evaluated. As a result, compared to the conventional device, the improved device showed a 32% reduction in positioning time and improved reproducibility by about 6.2 times. As for the amount of change over time, the positioning time increased in the conventional device, but decreased in the improved device, and the reproducibility of the conventional device was lower than that of the improved device. Through this, it can be said that the use of the improved device improved the image quality and reduced the radiologist's workload.

  • LIST is the Lyman-$\alpha$ Imaging Solar Telescope, a project funded by the Korean government to fly on the second Korean Science and Technology research Satellite (STSat-2) due to launch in December 2005. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Minhwan Jang of Kyung-Hee University and of the Space Payload Research Center (SPARC), a consortium of Korean universities and institutions formed to develop scientific research projects in space. The purpose of the LIST project is to design, build, and operate an instrument on STSat-2 which will make images of the Sun from Earth orbit at the wavelength of the Hydrogen Lyman-a emission line at 121.6 nm. LIST has a simple design concept comprised of a small telescope to image the full disk of the Sun onto a CCD detector and a set of filters to isolate the 121.6 nm wavelength.

  • 외부 고리를 갖는 은하들(Outer ring galaxies)을 SDSS dr7 목록에서 분류하여, 이들이 갖는 특징과 링 구조(Ring structure)를 형성하는데 외부환경의 요인이 있는지 조사하고자 했다. z<0.05, b/a>0.6, R>6"의 조건에서 25,308개의 은하들을 추출하였고, SDSS image tool을 이용하여 531개의 외부 고리 은하(Outer ring galaxies)또는 외부고리를 갖고 있는 것처럼 보이는 은하(Ring-like galaxies)를 육안으로 분류하였다. 5개(u, g, r, i, z)의 필터로 관측되어진 CCD 이미지의 분석으로 최종적으로 69개의 외부고리 은하(Outer ring galaxies)를 선정하였다. 통계적으로 전체 은하에서 외부 고리 은하가 차지하는 비율이 약 0.2726%라는 결과를 얻게 되었고, 은하들의 주변의 환경을 조사한 결과 배경밀도와 비리얼 반경에 있어서 다른 형태의 고리를 갖고 있는 은하들과의 유의미한 특이점은 보이지 않았다.

  • A case of hemifacial hyperplasia that presented with muscular, skeletal, and dental hyperplasia along with lipomatous infiltration was described. Advanced imaging was useful in identifying the lipomatous infiltration present in the lesion, which raises the possibility of lipomatosis having a diverse presentation in hemifacial hyperplasia. As there was a scarcity of related literature in the field of dentomaxillofacial radiology, this report would make us familiar with its computed tomographic and magnetic resonance image findings.

A Block-Based Adaptive Data Hiding Approach Using Pixel Value Difference and LSB Substitution to Secure E-Governance Documents

  • In order to protect secret digital documents against vulnerabilities while communicating, steganography algorithms are applied. It protects a digital file from unauthorized access by hiding the entire content. Pixel-value-difference being a method from spatial domain steganography utilizes the difference gap between neighbor pixels to fulfill the same. The proposed approach is a block-wise embedding process where blocks of variable size are chosen from the cover image, therefore, a stream of secret digital contents is hidden. Least significant bit (LSB) substitution method is applied as an adaptive mechanism and optimal pixel adjustment process (OPAP) is used to minimize the error rate. The proposed application succeeds to maintain good hiding capacity and better signal-to-noise ratio when compared against other existing methods. Any means of digital communication specially e-Governance applications could be highly benefited from this approach.

Benign osteoblastoma of the mandible: a case report

  • Osteoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm formed by osteoid tissue and well-vascularized bone that occurs mainly in children and adolescents. It appears primarily in the long bones, vertebral column, and small bones of the hands and feet, and not typically in the skull and maxillary bones. The purpose of this study is to present the case of an 8-year-old girl with a diagnosis of right mandibular osteoblastoma and a review of the relevant literature. The goals of treatment were to preserve dental occlusion, masticatory function and facial symmetry while minimizing the effects on patient body image and quality of life. Osteoblastoma, although it is benign, can be aggressive, and its treatment will depend on the timing of diagnosis, size and location. Early diagnosis is essential to avoid not only radical surgery as in the case presented, but also to help minimize the risk of possible relapse and potential malignancy of a benign osteoblastoma.

  • Due to the introduction of CR and DR, it has been neglected the use of the X-ray beam collimator and field size. This study examines nationwide survey of the proper use of collimator and field size by area in a specific field of plain radiography and the current status. Authors emphasized the need for the field size criteria, and propose a standard reference field size in each specific radiologic examination. Total 333 medical institutions (included in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Jeolla, Chungcheong, Gangwon-do, Busan area), were investigated in relation to the status of the X-ray beam collimation field size, type specific inspection areas, medical facilities, and image analyses by type to figure out whether they use the adjustment of image field to the specific examination. To assess the awareness and the impact of radiation exposure to the collimation adjustable, 168 radiographers who was working in 10 general hospitals, 10 hospitals, and 10 clinics, were surveyed how they haver adjusted the actual field size. We examine that 61.3% of medical institutions used the "Proper collimation" and only 49.9% of them employed proper one in lumbar spine densely crowded by major organs. 69% among general hospitals, and 65% among hospitals using DR system were using proper collimation. Radiographers recognized that proper adjustment of collimation could reduce the harmful radiation dose on patients. In the survey, 97.6% of respondents were aware of this fact, but only 83.3% of respondents did the adjustment of the size of the collimation field. The using of proper collimation field was low in the nationwide survey, so the effort to reduce the radiation dose on the patients is urgently needed. A unified standard for the field accompanied by thorough education should be needed.

Soil moisture estimation using the water cloud model and Sentinel-1 & -2 satellite image-based vegetation indices (Sentinel-1 & -2 위성영상 기반 식생지수와 Water Cloud Model을 활용한 토양수분 산정)

  • In this study, a soil moisture estimation was performed using the Water Cloud Model (WCM), a backscatter model that considers vegetation based on SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar). Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 MSI (Multi-Spectral Instrument) images of a 40 × 50 km2 area including the Yongdam Dam watershed of the Geum River were collected for this study. As vegetation descriptor of WCM, Sentinel-1 based vegetation index RVI (Radar Vegetation Index), depolarization ratio (DR), and Sentinel-2 based NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) were used, respectively. Forward modeling of WCM was performed by 3 groups, which were divided by the characteristics between backscattering coefficient and soil moisture. The clearer the linear relationship between soil moisture and the backscattering coefficient, the higher the simulation performance. To estimate the soil moisture, the simulated backscattering coefficient was inverted. The simulation performance was proportional to the forward modeling result. The WCM simulation error showed an increasing pattern from about -12dB based on the observed backscattering coefficient.

Analysis and Proposal of Abstractive Expression of 3D Animation (3D 애니메이션의 추상적 표현에 관한 분석 및 제안)

  • The advancement of computer technology has blurred the border in image expression between live-action films and 3D animation to an indistinguishable extent. Despite the ever-evolving image expression, it has been found that animation properly incorporating abstractive expression receives more positive responses from the audience than the animation closely akin to live-action films. This indicates that animation-specific abstractive expression can exert more significant effects than that of live-action expression as proved in Dr. Mori Masahiro's 'Uncanny Valley.' Also, such effects apply only to characters, whilst the technology capable of live-action expression is acknowledged only for the background of 3D animation. Without doubt, animation has its own infinite world of expression, and thus more effective methods for its expression can no longer be considered a matter of technology. The present study analyzes the abstractive expression of 3D animation in terms of characters and backgrounds and explores a more effective method to apply the current technology of image expression to 3D animation with a view to proposing a direction for more appropriate application of 3D animation technology to future animation.
