For the research of the natural marine antioxidant, an antioxidant-producing marine actinomycetes was isolated from sea water in Jeju coastal area. The strain was identified based on 16S rDNA sequencing, the morphology by a method of scanning electron microscopy, physiological and biochemical characteristics and cellular fatty acid analysis. The isolated strain ACT-18 was gram positive, aerobic, non-motile spores. Substrate mycelia are dark green and yellow gray aerial mycelia. The cell size of the strain was $0.5{\sim}1.0\;{\mu}m$. 16S rDNA sequence analysis showed that were Gram-positive bacteria grouped on Streptomyces sp. Results of cellular fatty acid analysis showed that major cellular fatty acids were $C_{15:0}$ anteiso (39.33%), $C_{16:1}$ cis 9 (11.96%), $C_{16:0}$ (13.08%) and $C_{17:0}$ anteiso (10.99%). The antioxidant activity of methanol extract from Streptomyce sp. ACT-18 was evaluated by measuring 1,1-diphenyl- 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl, and alkyl radical scavenging activity using an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer. DPPH radical scavenging activity of SBME (Streptomyces Broth Methanol Extract) A-18 was 46% at 0.1 mg/mL. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of SBME A-18 was 63% at 0.1 mg/mL. Alkyl radical scavenging activity of SBME A-18 was 39% at 0.1 mg/mL.
Fifty-four natural plants from Jeju Island, Korea were extracted by 70% methanol. The extracts containing the highest total phenolic contents (TPC) (>250 mg gallic acid equivalents/g dry sample) were obtained from Ostrya japonica, Geranium thunbergii, Malus sieboldii, Ardisia japonica, and Agrimonia pilosa. DPPH inhibition activity was greatest in Ardisia crenata at 94.1%. A high correlation was observed between DPPH inhibition activity and TPC ($R^2=0.87$). Tyrosinase inhibition activities of more than 85% were obtained from the extracts of Persicaria filiformis, Rhus javanica, Alnus firma, and Myrica rubra. On the other hand, the P. filiformis and M. rubra extracts each showed more than 90% XOD inhibition activity. The five natural plants with the highest biological activities were also extracted by pressurized liquid (PLE, 100% methanol, 13.6 MPa, $40^{\circ}C$). The DPPH and tyrosinase inhibition activities were almost the same in both the 70% methanol and PLE extracts. The $IC_{50}$ for tyrosinase and elastase inhibition activities in PLE were 802 and 88 ppm in A. japonica, and 959 and 66 ppm in M. rubra, respectively.

The effect of lactic acid bacteria.fermented ginseng berry extract (FGBE) on physiological activities was evaluated. The contents of ginsenosides Re, Rc, and Rb1 in ginseng berry extract (GBE) were increased after fermentation by lactic acid bacteria when analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. Antioxidant activity of GBE and FGBE was also analyzed by DPPH radical scavenging activity assay and SOD.like activity assay. FGBE showed a 86.34 % inhibition of DPPH radical and a 76.82 % inhibition by SOD.like activity at a concentration of 1.00 %. GBE showed a 49.78 % inhibition of DPPH radical and a 40.80 % inhibition by SOD.like activity at the same concentration. Furthermore, procollagen type I (COL1A1) gene expression increased by 823.13 % and matrix metal-loproteinase(MMP)-1 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ gene expression decreased by 87.88 % and 99.92 %, respectively, in human fibroblast cultured with FGBE at a concentration of 0.50 %. These results suggest that FGBE could be used as an active ingredient for functional cosmetics.
This study was performed to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of methanol extract from Rosmarinus officinalis L. and its fractions. The ethyl acetate fraction of rosemary had a higher antioxidant activity in both DPPH ($3.22\;{\mu}g/ml$) and ABTS ($5.05\;{\mu}g/ml$) compared to other extracts and fractions. Based on the results of the FRAP assay, the ethyl acetate fraction of rosemary showed a value of $5.9{\pm}0.3\;{\mu}M/{\mu}g$, and buthanol fraction and rosmarinic acid exhibited values of $4.8{\pm}0.2\;{\mu}M/{\mu}g$ and $5.1{\pm}0.1\;{\mu}M/{\mu}M$, respectively. Measurements of the antimicrobial activities of the extracts, fraction against gram positive, negative bacteria revealed that the methanol extract, hexane, ethyl acetate, and chloroform fraction of rosemary caused Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli to form clear zones greater than 12 mm. Furthermore, the methanol extract and chloroform fraction showed high antibacterial activity, with inhibition zone exceeding 13 mm. The methanol extract and chloroform fraction of rosemary had broad antimicrobial spectrums and low MIC values. Therefore, methanol extracts of rosemary could serve as potential antibacterial agents to inhibit pathogen growth in food and hand sanitizers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate antioxidant activity and cell differentiation effects of Monascus purpureus pigment on osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cell. In order to examine the antioxidant activities of Monascus purpureus pigment, DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging and SOD-like activities were investigated. DPPH radical and ABTS radical scavenging activities of Monascus purpureus pigment were increased in a dose-dependent manner, and maximum activity were 94% and 99% at a concentration of 1,000 ㎍/ml, respectively. Additionally, SOD-like activity of Monascus purpureus pigment showed 62% at a concentration of 1,000 ㎍/ml. MC3T3-E1 cells did not show cytotoxicity in the concentration range of Monascus purpureus pigment 1~100 ㎍/ml. The ALP activity was increased by addition of Monascus purpureus pigment, and the maximum activity was 124% as compared with control. In addition, nodule formation, a late differentiation factor for bone formation, was increased by adding Monascus purpureus pigment compared to control. These results suggest that Monascus purpureus pigment is expected to be a natural source for developing functional materials to prevent bone-related diseases by osteoblast differentiation.
Natural anti-oxidative compounds have important disease prevention and food preservation properties, in addition to anti-bacterial, anti-inflammation, anti-cancer, and skin whitening effects. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), with an ultra vilolet (UV) detector coupled to a reverse phase C18 column and an online measurement system for 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, was used to search for potent antioxidative compounds in crude extracts. The online HPLC-DPPH assay was then applied to confirm antioxidative compounds in water extracts from Radix of Pueraria lobata, Rhizoma of Zingiber officinale, Fructus of Chaenomeles sinensis, Cortex of Ulmus pumila, and Radix of Astragalus membranaceus. To determine the yields of the extracts, the Brix% of each extract solution was measured using a refractometer. When the relative DPPH radical scavenging ability values of the water extracts were compared with those of a positive control (ascorbic acid), the water extracts of P. lobata, C. sinensis, and U. pumila were 7.77%, 4.71%, and 4.19%, respectively. The results suggest that this method provides a useful assay for rapid measurement of DPPH radical scavenging abilities and conformation of antioxidative compounds in natural products. Moreover, it can reduce the time spent on the separation of active compounds from natural materials, such as medicinal plants, in addition to the use of reagents for separation.
The essential oil of Acorus gramineus(Aracease), which has been used as an antioconvulsant in Korean folk medicine, was evaluated for its effects on antioxidative system in vitro and in vivo. This mixture of terpenes showed inhibitory effects on xanthine oxidase activity with 13.3% at 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and on aldehyde oxidase activity with 5.0% at 1$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml. Lipid perosidation was inhibited by 49.4% at 1.0 mg/ml of the essential oil in vitro and by 16.7% after 7 days inhablation of an oil as compared to PTZ-treated control group. DPPH radical scavenging activity of this essential oil was ralatively werak.

In the present study, the levels of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, as well as activities of radical scavenging (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity) and anti-obesity were assessed with cold water (CLC), hot water (CLH), and methanolic (CLM) extracts of Curcuma longa L. (turmeric). Our results showed that the phenolic compounds of CLC, CLH and CLM were $3.68{\pm}0.80%$, $3.94{\pm}0.74%$ and $9.01{\pm}0.73%$, respectively. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of the CLM were significantly higher than that of the water extracts (CLC and CLH). During the adipocyte differentiation, the treatment of CLM more significantly inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells than that of the water extracts. These results indicate that the stimulation of radical scavenging potential and the inhibition of adipogenesis were brought on by the lipophilic compounds of turmeric.

For the reseach of the natural marine antioxidant, an antioxidant-producing bacterium was isolated from seawater in Jeju costal area. The isolated strain SC2-1 was Gram-positive, catalase positive, oxidase negative, motile and small rods. The strain utilized sucrose, dextrose, fructose, mannitol and maltose as a sole carbon and energy source and NaCl required for growth. The radical scavenging activity of the culture supernatant was detemined by DPPH method. This bacterium was identified based on morphological, biochemical characteristics and 16S rDNA sequence analysis, and then was named Exiguobacterium sp. SC2-1. The optimum conditions of culture for production antioxidnat were $25^{\circ}C$, pH 6-8 and $4\%$ NaCl. The stain showed the highest activity and growth cultured in medium which added $1\%$ maltose. Hydroxyl radical activity of the supernatant of Exiguobacterium sp. SC2-1 was $73\%$. The SOD activity of the culture supernatant was estimated about $35\%$.
This study aims to identify the chemical compositions and antioxidant activities of essential oil, extracted from the leaves of Neolitsea aciculata (Blume) Koidz by the hydrodistillation method. To the end, the chemical composition of N. aciculata leaf oil was firstly analyzed through GC/MS. The major constituents of essential oil were found to be: cis-ocimene (11.00%), trans-ocimene (9.65%), elemol (9.15%), ${\beta}$-elemene (8.75%), germacrene-D (7.55%), trans-caryophyllene (5.90%), ${\gamma}$-elemene (5.40%) and ${\tau}$-muurolol (4.95%). Then, the antioxidant potential of the essential oil was evaluated by the methods of total polyphenolic content (TPC) assay, DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). It was estimated that the total polyphenolic content of the oil was $136.7{\pm}0.13\;mg\;GAE/g$ and the efficient concentration of the oil required to scavenge 50% DPPH radicals ($EC_{50}$ value) was $639.33\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. Also, ABTS radical scavenging activity was identified to be concentration dependent, while the FRAP value was $31.21{\pm}0.12\;{\mu}M$$FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O/g$. Such figures, as a result, suggest that the essential oil extracted from the leaves of N. aciculata has its antioxidant activity, which can serve as significant health functional benefits.
